I have said it before, and I will say it again, QUALIFY. When I mean qualify, I mean seriously do your best to get yourself the best possible starting position. It's not a super human endeavour. If you take the time to get your Q time up to snuff, you will start better, finish better, and race better people.
If I am faced with mid pack or worse starting positions, I go back to work and get my lap time down. It is essential and, most importantly, it is how you take control of the situation.
Agreed, if I don’t qualify in the top 5 I don’t bother. I go back and run more laps. Typically I won’t even enter a race until I’m within a second of the fastest time.
This isn’t to say that all people who qualify at the top are good/clean racers. A lot struggle with consistency, and some are fast but have no clue how to pass. It’s the ones who are consistent yet dirty you need to watch for.
But when you get into a good group it’s some great great racing at the front.
