Damn that is impressive!! That was my first clean race ever, mind you only had the game 2 weeks.

@Sven Jurgens anywhere I can go to watch some of your replays? Love to watch and learn from the best, been my strategy so far and seems to really be helping.

Your best bet is to race on Tokyo and save the replay after, chances are I'm there lol. I hardly ever upload full races since it takes so long on my slow upload connection. This is my 'channel' where I dump all my short clips I link here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3RAb-ykTZI-JRXclw7yWLw It's 99% complaining about the penalty system

General tips, slow in fast out always works better and gives you options to avoid cars bouncing off walls at corner exit. When in doubt, take the inside in T1 and stay on the inside. Don't try to pass when the car in front is right behind another car, you won't have anywhere to fit in and will only slow both of you down in the next corner. Only pass at the final hairpin if there is another car ahead you can draft otherwise they will simply pass you again on the straight. Don't pass too soon on the straight to get a good slingshot, unless the car in front is already drafting another car, then stick close.

It's really all about reading the traffic and positioning yourself for success. It takes a lot of experience as no two drivers are exactly the same, situations change all the time depending on cars, traffic, lag, emotions. Watch out for those that just got a penalty and stay clear of two battling cars until you can safely shoot past both.

Try to avoid braking in slipstream, position yourself just a little on the inside for maximum braking while giving the person ahead 'the fear' that you're setting up a dive bomb, they will usually brake late. Then if no traffic behind carefully move back to the racing line while braking for the optimal line through the corner. Passing on the outside often works better than on the inside for the simple reason is that, if the outside car turns in on you and bounces off you get a penalty, if the inside car doesn't leave you room, they get a penalty. And always keep half an eye on the mirror while braking, it's better to let a dive bomb through than get wrecked. They will screw up later.

Radar, radar, radar. When in traffic in a corner I hardly look at the road, keep my eyes peeled on the radar to keep equal distance to all the triangles around me. It's a top down racing game in traffic

It takes a lot of practice to be able to adjust each corner on the fly, to take it from any entry speed, any entry line, slipstream, dirty air and get the intended exit point. Hence I don't value qualifying much at all, conditioning yourself to take the corner at the same line same speed over and over is only detrimental to racing other people imo. My braking points, corner speed and lines through corners change all the time so watching a video won't help all that much.

One thing I rely on when blindly jumping on a new track is the blinking gear speed indicator. The correct braking point for any entry speed is usually about 2 blinks after the indicated gear shows in red. (Last week's race B was an exception, there it failed horribly lol). That's useful when you get one of those BS penalties and now approach a sharp corner at a totally different speed or start at different positions on the way to T1 like at NGP.

Practice, practice, practice. Not qualifying gives you the most opportunities to learn. Starting in front and driving away from the pack doesn't teach you anything. From the back you mostly get easier passes, but also some fast drivers that fall behind due to a crash or penalty, maximum learning opportunities and maximum fun

Good luck!

Yay a real clean race, Friday mornings are the best! No contact whatsoever.

Crap it's 11 am already, oops.

I think I was in that same race. I went from 10th to 6th, myself. Not bad considering I using a non-meta car, AFAIK.

I have been avoiding Tokyo like a plague, and just been focusing on red bull ring. Although with the tips tonight maybe the night I take the dive into Tokyo, no qualifying straight into the race.

Some solid tips for all races in general, my key to figuring out RBR last night was, loose a little on the entry to get earlier on the throttle on exit.

Yes I posted about that yesterday how some guys qualify great but just fall apart in race, a race is much more dynamic then Just steady laps on a track by yourself.

Also seriously been working on throttle control, was using TC 1, and finally today got enough practice laps in with TC 0, that I ran the race like that. Actually makes you quite a bit faster if you can be consistent.

Lots of things I never even realized, such as breaking in the slip stream, solid pointers man, really appreciate it.

I'd add patience. On tracks like Tokyo people make mistakes or go for passes which simply aren't on. Over time you can start to read situations. Leave space, back out of the throttle if needs be, give people the opportunity to have their accident without getting dragged into it. I would guess that 50% of my positions gained have been penalty zone, 30% where people make mistakes and I profit and maybe 20% (probably less) actual passes.

Yeah but did they fix the boundaries on turn 1? I like RBR otherwise but I haven't raced on it in a while, since I saw a lot of people purposely going into the run-off area on turn 1 both in qualifying replays and in the race itself.

No kidding. In the race I had this morning, I gained two positions near the end of the last lap just because the two people in front of me had penalties to serve before that last turn.

I don't think anyone runs into the runoff area on purpose. The fastest line is over the hump at apex with your right wheel, then just touching the curb on outside as you accelerate out. You won't get a penalty running out there, because it's not gaining you anything.

Yes. Getting to SR S means I'm getting matched with higher ratings which is boosting the DR Gain. I'm up to B now.

[\QUOTE]

I never thought of that. In EMEA with DR C, SR S you predominantly get matched with people at the same rank. I think 90% of the races I am in is made up of the same rank, maybe one or two from the rank above on rare occasions.
Perhaps I need a American account to rise quicker

.

It's changed, it seems inconsistent though. Just going flat out and wide like before will get you a penalty. I've had penalties for just getting all four wheels onto the red tarmac but had someone ahead of me today who went right over the yellow kerb yet didn't get a penalty. Whether it's more relaxed in the race or he wasn't on full throttle I don't know but he looked more than wide enough to pick up a pen.

On the whole though, I'd say yes it's been fixed. Any time you run wide out of T1 now you're risking a penalty

Here's an example with a bit of everything. Not too long since I got disconnected after 7 minutes, easier to upload. I already made it to 4th though so the rest would just be a chase to catch the rest.

And yep, throttle control in the corner is key. Keep you eyes fixed on the outer wall and estimate the rate of closing to adjust throttle accordingly and stop an inch from touching the wall. It's easier in VR since you have your peripheral vision to help, if only we could do sport races in VR!

I
I'm in EMEA. I keep tabs on who/what I get matched with and even at DR D SR B I was getting matched with DR As and Bs.

Pretty much never see the entire DR C field you mention. Ironically, the times I've seen 2 DR As matched with 16 DR Ds is when I've used my DR A+ account.
We must race at different times then

The first esses, under the overpass, will be interesting if so.

I agree, I'm really curious to see how this plays out. I’m assuming it will just be wet track everywhere. But the interesting part will be the tunnels and underpasses, will the falling rain stop when you’re underneath of something?

With that Tokyo footage, hopefully, we find out today(Saturday).

There's a strip of paint on the track showing where you have to be two wheels onside out of T1, but you can still go four wheels off fairly wide before that.

First race was good. Did get a tap into T1, but I stayed on the inside.

Rcae 2. NO love. Started 5th. Got a tap from the car that finished 2nd and it was all downhill from there with that Vantage, who was slow in the corners. I got back in the top 10, but Huracans fighting, were holding us up and me trying to back out, meant cars behind barreled through with haste. I may have had a total of 25 seconds worth of penalties.

Can't believe my win last night - with a gap of 0.004 seconds, I had the lead most of the race, he got me on lap 4, I trailed him for the whole lap, right up until the last corner, he went a bit wide, I cut in the inside, just edged him out - amazing racing, and very clean for us on the RBR. It's such a rush when you get a race like that!

Still wary on the Race C lol

I admit after a few beers and rest I can say be very very wary of race C, but I am still going to have to go back. It was too easy to get into the top group of cars to ignore. I also have to admit my rankings aren't going to improve if I abandon racing and with Sarthe next week I am at least consistently average at Tokyo and crap there so have to get while the getting is good. Going to drive me nuts driving paranoid, but it did work out at DTS a few weeks ago, and seeing the results you guys have I know I can get back up to cleanish lobbies. The ones I am in now would be clean if I can clear through the first 2 laps without either screwing up or getting punted as the drivers recovering their rankings are trying to go squeaky clean at the front and always get a big gap away from the carnage behind. That is where I need to be. Going to have to go Lambo though for a trial, jag was ok and smooth but felt I was losing something somewhere although it could just be my driving.

Would it be fair to say the unwritten rule around Tokyo is that the car in front, while on the racing line, has rite of way through the fast corners?

Had a week of (mostly) great racing until today. A few people thought it was okay to:
a) send a pass up the inside at the fast/blind/death chicane, and;
b) assume there is enough room to go 2-wide through the fast right-hander that follows it.

I disagreed on both of those. Just not a smart way to race here where there is absolutely no run-off.

You're absolutely right, problem is many people racing aren't smart and even more have zero race craft. And with the penalty system how it is, even if you go for an overtake that's on it can end in tears. I had one just, first corner, I slot in in 16th (I think) nicely on the racing line, the two ahead run each other wide and slow, I see the opportunity and go on the inside for an easy double overtake into T2, the lead car dives across to block the first, the other follows, they smash me into the wall and I'm the one of the three who gets the 5s penalty!

If by not being an idiot you have to yield sometimes, so be it, better than having a crash or getting penalties

*I need to remember to turn music off on GT!!
