Once the car is up the inside then the traits of the GTO are such that he's going to be understeering towards the outside of the track - hard to say without seeing the throttle trace whether he tried to avoid that, again in this game the majority aren't going to lift to create space when 1st (or any other position generally) fever takes hold. I'm actually surprised the game gave out a penalty.
Historically, leaving racing room i.e. the car's width has been an expectation. However, I can tune in to virtually any racing series and watch someone on the outside being squeezed. In online racing, you're largely screwed.
I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying if you leave the door open, someone will go for it and in this instance the gap was huge. If I'm running on pole (and in general), if there's a corner that is making me vulnerable to a punt I try to minimise that risk. If needs be, and the option is viable, I'll go in faster, to avoid the punt, and manage the understeer/compromised line on the way through and out. Better to live to fight on than be in the gravel/wall. There's virtually nothing you can do in example 2 of those shown.
