I had ample opportunity to sample the new Mazda in qualifying for Race B, with my best effort being a 2:18.108. The car is planted in the high speed corners – it’s ridiculously easy to take Eau Rouge / Raidillon, the second part of Stavelot* and Blanchimont flat. Top end speed is good, corner exit is very good as well, which obviously goes well together. The car seems to be weaker on corner entry though, particularly while trail braking into slower corners with positive BB (very snappy) and through medium speed corners, where it’s quite happy to understeer. It took me a long time to figure out Pouhon, and still had the feeling that I was losing massive amounts of time. All in all it’s a very fun car, though, and a lovely addition to Gr. 3.
I tried the R8 for a short while after, and just managed to get unter the 2m18s barrier, which makes me roughly 0.5s quicker than when I last tried this combination in November. In comparison to the Mazda, the R8 is a lot harder to wrestle through Raidillon – I need way more steering lock and it almost feels like the car is skirting on the floor before it starts to turn. I also can’t quite get it to go flat through the second right-hander of Stavelot, I have to apply minimal lift to make it turn properly. The response through Pouhon is much better, though, and I think that’s what made most of the difference in the lap time, as, subjectively, the Mazda marginally edges the R8 on the rest of the lap.
Random observation: For anyone trying to get a decent top end speed down the Kemmel straight, I’d recommend leaving the R8 in 5th – in 6th the car just bogs down and barely goes any faster.
*Does that corner have an official name? Track map evidence on Google seems inconclusive.
