I watched an IRacing Gr. 3 race video at Le Mans yesterday. Some of the same limit areas that we have. Some they were cutting real big without penalty. Programmers discretion? It should be based on real rules for the real track. I'm going with the program just not being able to keep up with everything.

I don't know what it is, but there's definitely some mileage in the idea that the angle/speed you go over some kerbs counts. The last time Le Mans was an FIA race I was watching @Tidgney and he was getting penalties on some laps and not others and genuinely couldn't figure out why.

If you're racing from the back I will suggest your real pace is much quicker than the midfield or back markers, and they will usually brake earlier and less consistently.

I'm getting punted up the rear often by quick guys who like racing from the back and haven't qualified. I'm consistent, but more conservative than them. Simple.

I don't qualify so start from the back. I don't qualify because of your second sentence. When in the pack, I feel I have a target on my bumper and everyone aims for the bullseye. After a few punts, I'm in the back anyway. May as well start there.

I decided a couple weeks ago to set a Q time Sunday morning. Just don't know if I'll race. I'm new, just now beginning to understand the DR system, and trying to dig out of a deep DR hole. Starting in the pack may very well make me lose the hard fought gains I've made this week.

But I would kinda like to try the McLaren. It's the Gr. 1 car I'm best in practice (Arcade TT), setting 3:08's (will set the Q in the R92). I'd like to see if I can hold the draft and make gains through the curves. But still, the punt into Mulsanne may ruin it all. If I even get that far.

Edit: I take that back about the McLaren. Drove the Tomahawk to a couple low :07's. Don't know how they do in the draft. I've passed several and pulled away. But also not been able to catch two that were drafting together till a mistake broke them up. But if I can manage an :08 Qual (or better?), maybe I'll take it out for fun. If I dare.

Seems to be a game of inches. Trying to measure those inches at these speeds, in the heat of battle, is the hard part.

Took the Audi VGT for a spin. Don't use it.

First of all, your top speed isn't good at all compared to the Group C cars. They'll roar right past you. And the final gear actually makes you lose speed for some reason. I shifted up thinking I was gonna get even faster and instead my speed started going down. I don't know if this is intentional or if there's something I'm missing.

The hybrid also causes quite a bit of front wheelspin - not NISMO bad, but still not good at all. Causes you to waste the whole battery and damage your tyres. I never have this issue with the 919, which also has a FWD hybrid, so I'm assuming this is specific to the Audi.

It's a shame, because I like the sound of this car and how it handles.

TL;DR: qualifying practice against ghosts = DR+

Given that DR gain/loss is solely a function of where you finish, the only way I have found to consistently gain is to spend 2-3 days running qualifying laps in the "qualifying only" lobby using the leaderboard ghosts for pacing. This will get me to the point where (i) I have a qualifying time low enough to start in the top 5 when matched against similar DR, or (ii) midfield into a bracket with higher rated drivers. It also means my pace is consistent and I can run the course close to qual times for multiple laps without mistakes.

Something else to mention is that starting in the top 3 is a big advantage if you can avoid the divebomb/punt and pull a slow-in, fast-out on turn 1 - usually results in a big gap due to the concertina effect.

I like the idea, but my ability level wouldn't be able to keep up with the ghosts. My very best in Arcade TT is 3:06.7. Which was a fluke, as I haven't been able to repeat it. :07's and :08's for the most part. How far down the leaderboard does that lobby go? I've only seen 10. And to fast for me. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Newbie questions. Dontcha love 'em.

Not had the chance to race at all this week. Had a few spare minutes, decided to hop on my alt account and do some daily race B.

Had a great chase with a quick French driver. Initially fighting to keep up. Then hoping to chase him down, then pushing to hard and mentally settling for 2nd place.

The whole race up. Not the most hectic. But was good fun.

On a side note. What kind of race pace would you expect in an A/S lobby to be competitive in race B? Before I hop on my main account.

You can set the ghosts to respawn once they get too far ahead (I set mine for 1.5 seconds ahead with respawn active). I also turn off my personal best ghost b/c it can interfere too much with seeing braking points. The further you get through the course without a respawn the better you are doing/you are close to pace for those sectors. It also lets you see where you are loosing time on exit/entry relative to the ghost. Once I can get to the end of the lap without one occurring then I feel that I am close enough to racing pace for the main event.

I was about to ask a bunch more questions, but had a look under the Qual. tab first. Figured out how to load a ghost. Dang it. Now that I'm there, I have to try some laps. See you all next week. I'll be the one with blisters on my feet.
 
Sure is messy on Saturday afternoon. Internet is crap two, one disconnect while matching and one disconnect in lap 4. 1 out of 3 race attempts completed. I'm going swimming instead, 4pm the UV rays should be slightly less deadly now :lol:

64 SR left or back up from a DR reset yesterday (was down from low SR.S to SR.C in one race. SR.S is a dangerous place to race) DR from 36K reset to 15K, now back at 24K. Dunno how much I lost from that last disconnect, it's all meaningless anyway. Does the FL you set still count after getting disconnected?

you all better watch your back on the mulsanne straight in case somebody gets close fast in order to give you a penalty for bump drafting , so you can get out of the way in time

I admitted to doing that this morning. But he deserved it. Roughed up a couple cars in front of me, then side slammed me several times, finally forcing me off in Dunlop. So I rewarded him with a single second.

But yeah. Someone does that as the new safe way to steal a spot, not cool.
 
PD activated bump drafting penalties the same week we have le mans no chicane , coincidence? i think not
 
I just finished a 90 minute gr C on Fuji, then topped with a daily race C.
