Welp, F1 Cup this week! Haha. Guess I'll join them after this race, since I'm using the DBR9.
Edit: That was dumb. Dude in an F1 kept blocking me everywhere. Even on the straight! We're losing touch with the front runners. Just dumb. Blocking so much on the entry. He's hitting the wall to prevent any inside move. Just dumb.

I smashed him into the wall at the exit of the final corner. Just T-boned and rubber his car all in the wall. Idiotic to block all race.
I start d on the RM and had fresh RS from Lap 7-10. Newer cars are quicker through the middle of the track. All he had to do was stay on his line. We could have made up ground.

Well, I got a win and FL in Race A. Love the track and it seems like easy cruising.

Back to Rac C. Jumped in th F1. A Huracan says for th F1 behind him, bump him and do not pass. Yeah right. That'll work. I pass him as he's perpendicular between T2 and the entrance ramp.
I climb to 3rd. Leaders pit from RM on Lap 5. I go one more for RS Lap 6. Catch and pass P2 after bump drafting him. He released me to go after P1.
P1 pits! Post race, he said he messed up the pit stop.
I slowed at the exit to the final corner to let P2 go ahead. I won fair and square, but P2 had tailed P1 from the start and I gave him the win.

Onto Race B.in the WRX.
Edit: Nope. One and done. Didn't enjoy it.

Awesome read. I actually read this article yesterday just before I posted my question here.

Had three more races B. I think watching F1, reading the rules of racing and some tips for switch-backs in the same day made me feel so much more confident with other cars around. I didn't suddenly started to overtake everyone but finally wasn't nervous as hell when others were close. I attempted switch-backs three times on the seaside hairpin, 2 failed attempts and one semi-failed (was able to have the better speed exiting the corner but had to give way because was half a car behind on entrance). Made it to top-5 starting from P12 on the last go, though mostly due to a lot of errors from others and a possible carnage on the first chicane of the second lap.

I think I will stick to races B for now - I'm pretty satisfied with my ability to set decent qualifying times but a lot more work is needed when racing others. The pack is close to practice racing against others and with no tire wear and being mostly gr3/gr4 events means I will have less things to worry about while I learn.

I have a question. Can you find out how many players are doing a daily race real time? Last week I went from dr. B to A on my alt account, but I kept getting into mixed lobby's no matter what time of the day it was. It was always A+ and A and sometimes also a couple of B drivers in the same lobby. Were there just not many players doing race C or are there other possibilities (SR was not he not the issue)?

I find that the TT will understeer like crazy at wide open throttle, but if you keep it at partial throttle on corner exit, the differential works in your favor to keep the car neutral and still allow a lot of steering input as you accelerate off the turn. It's in line with what the original poster mentioned, that it doesn't feel like a FWD car.

What's interesting about it is that the TT's diff allows steering input to be effective all the way up to like 90% throttle... so you can really work the car in corners. It's only at 100% throttle that the understeer seems to come in, so it's really flexible to drive.

The RCZ for example doesn't seem to work as well. Sure it can be just a hair quicker, mostly due to more straight line speed, but the TT can be driven with a lot more control in race situations, making it a very good race car.

I'm now trying to understand how to do the one thing I've probably never done successfully yet, a switch-back. Any tips on how to do this the right way?

The key to the switchback is to know when it will be effective. I had several instances last week in the daily race C. When done right, it makes the scenes look very cool. One of the easiest things to say is don't try to worry about making the switchback. I've said before, "race the track, not the driver". As you will see, I try to hit my braking & turning marks like normal, with slight modifications if someone is along side. Then, as they are racing me, they miss their marks & slide out of the way.



In this second video, this NSX was tough to get around, but after a couple of switchbacks, I was able to make the pass stick. Notice how he overshoots his braking point at the end of the video? That's him racing me, not the track.

Was so hyped for Catalunya, but that Clio...
That thing scares me.

To my knowledge there's no way to see the amount of driving online, at any time. But my first thought is what's you SR? I've found that when your SR drops you start getting into mixed DR lobbies. Does the Tokyo track still give penalties for hitting/scraping the bariers?

Yes, 1.5 seconds every time. But the penalty zone is just before a heavy breaking zone so it's not as bad as it could be.

I have run 3 race C today. Had to bail in the first as school called and I had to pick up a child.
So I lost 1k DR.
Next race I gained 3K! Then 1500 in the third, so net gain so far is 3.5K DR $

Time of day also makes a huge difference, especially for regions with a player base concentrated in a couple of timezones. Asia is pretty bad, as the majority of players are UTC+9 or UTC+10 (Japan and Eastern Australia). I've played early morning in those timezones and had S/S and E/C in the same race.

Yep. The underlying problems with the penalty system are as bad as ever, they've just turned down the sensitivity of what triggers a contact penalty. Oops, wrong thread!

Why?

It's rare that I go into a race thinking that I will try and do a switchback in a specific corner.
Usually I try to late apex as many corners as possible, especially the ones leading to a long straight. And that usually opens up the possibility to do a switchback when someone see an opportunity to outbrake me on the inside. They compromise their line and I can often make the pass stick before the next corner.

About the Clio. It's a MR/RR and setting the brake balance to +4 or so makes it much more stable.

Definitely not a fluke, no. I think that penalty is just plain wrong though. You don't gain an advantage running that wide, yet it slams you with 2.5s!

Yeah. This clip is from November, when we had the same combo. It hasn't changed.
2.5 seconds for going wide on that turn is wildly disproportionate.


FFs dominated that race in November, so maybe that won't be the case any longer.

FINALLY! A WIN! My first win since joining the B ranks - and that was a while ago!

Congrats. Not sure when my next win will be. Been close with a few podiums but I feel the elusive win in DR B won't come. (I'm sure it will, just feels that way.)

Which makes sense, further back before the corner (coming the opposite direction to this week's race) but looking at @sturk0167 clip above you can see how wide he runs, has to slow to avoid heading into the sand, compromised line, yet massive penalty?!

I was thinking the same. Was struggling to get top 5 finishes until I managed a great Q time in last week's race and managed to get two P3 starts, finishing 2nd and 1st respectively! Goes to show, practice and plenty of Q optimization laps pays off! Also helps if you get on with the track...

With respect to keeping the throttle on and balance, does that mean that you are trying to keep the turbo spun up? Others have noted that but I have not consciously applied it.

Since the nerf/BOP, I can make the VW Scirocco go fast, faster than the FF RCZ or TT almost everywhere. It is a bit perplexing because the RCZ was the FF choice at Spa and the TT was the choice at DTS but I could not make them work. It suggests that I can get better lap times if I can better exploit the META. Eventually, I got the META RCZ to work at RBR but it took until Sunday to get the good time (needed BB+3 not BB+5).

I noticed something odd at DTS with the VW. There was much discussion on the Esses and the entry. Eventually, I started experimenting with keeping the throttle feathered while braking and turning. It gave me more speed and I was able to complete the first curve with the correct line to the second but I was ill prepared to manage that speed into the next curve. There is something there but it needs more experimentation. The VW is a turbo car too.

Finding the last second of lap speed is orders of magnitude more complex than cutting the first few seconds. I guess, everyone here knows that already.

Sometimes @KosmoKazi is on point and with regard to diff settings on the ff he is correct. WOT locks the diff so both drive wheels can’t rotate different speeds, hence the car won’t turn.
The ff are fun to learn. I always avoided them until Mt Panorama where it was a Megane one make for many months.
It was there I began to get better with that car, I even got to quite enjoy it with practice.
So late last night I decided to run some laps in the VW and see what that things about. It’s very fast, 2mph quicker across the start finish line on a flying lap than the Mustang or Ferrari.
After 8 laps I had already beaten my previous time (my Stang time wasn’t an optimal either)
Anyways I really struggled turn 4, but on esses entry it was fine with a lift (never off throttle all the way). and flat in fifth again 2 mph quicker at my speed trap than the other cars I used.
It’s brakes are very strong indeed.
I wanted to comment though re the diff thing. I noticed with THAT ff it drove in my hands a little different than the Megane.
I found carrying way more entry speed turn one off throttle longer than I like and partial throttle exiting a bit more that it worked best. Turn 4 felt like crap I couldn’t get it right, I had big problems both there and bottom of the hill Rh turn.
It feels weird that diff to me, it’s again that proper partial throttle where you are accelerating but still turning and getting to full ASAP without running wide.
The Megane feels good to me but I didn’t compare. A lot of people love that TT and it’s quite strong but I’ve just never been good with it. Plus @Pigems always made me feel foolish when driving it because he’s extremely fast in it.
I think everybody can find the ff for them. They are not bad once you can get that feel.
I adore the Megane on the Mountain with those great brakes plus you can late brake stand it on its nose, off brake and tiny tiny throttle to level it and boom power on.
The VW I feel likes a bit less point and shoot and loves carrying speed in off throttle a bit of coasting coming in-coming off brake a touch sooner. It has mad grip, so can carry that speed.
Getting the most out of any of these imo requires that familiarity.
Like I say I’m awful in the TT but decent in the Megane and VW.
For me the sound and cockpit view are big factors too.
You gotta enjoy the car. VW and Megane have great cockpit views both have 2 good mirrors. The Megane sound though is FANTASTIC imo.
I’m not great in the Peugeot either.
The turns will always be kinda wonky imo in ff until or if you can wrap your head around what the car likes.
I think there’s 2 possibilities for maximizing VW in particular-off throttle tuck, coming off brake sooner on entry or 2 maybe the feather brake and light throttle together.
Again that diff can accept a tiny maintenance throttle.
My style of trying would be to coast a touch more trying to carry the momentum though.

I should have qualified VW and been next to you on the grid so we could battle Stang vs VW.
There was more time in both my quals there at the tcs 3 bb 0 I was running, I just never hit optimal.
I think we both could have hit sub 44 with a little effort or maybe working together exchanging notes.
Maybe a cool idea would be to do a qualifying lobby once in a while for open discussion and sharing car info and tricks. I dunno maybe @Pigems might be into it?
Something to consider given that q times are more important than ever.
It might be cool to share the track and use the chat to comment, follow each other on track and learn and compete...Jmo

I'm glad that I have an alt account. I'm clumsy at race B, even though I've harnessed the dark side to make that account the fastest one of them. But it wouldn't be a day of racing for me if I didn't off myself at turn 1, lap 1.

Started pole in the next race. I see 1 bar of connectivity. I fear what may happen. I dread what might happen. And then, the inevitable happens. Disconnected while leading. I check my ISP app. Sure enough. They are performing maintenance. A few minutes later, it's back.

I'm B/S (actually B/B at the moment) with a 56.6. Sounds like it's dicey when I rejoin the B/S rooms. Might stick with the alt all week.
