The Baja Spillway is based off the actual first stage of the Baja.
I did not know that. It's a bloody fantastic piece of road, though.

Also, my other issue with the rally stages in DiRT 2 is that they were pretty straightforward. And by that I mean that if you were facing north when you left the start line, 95% of the course would be travelling north. There were only a handful of occasions when you'd break out from that north-bound path. From memory, there was only one stage in McRAE 2.0 that did that (this insanely fast Finnish stage that you could do in 48 seconds if you pushed). So I'd like some actual stages that aren't just variations on travelling due north.

It wasn't a problem in the other game modes, though. I especially loved the Kasbah Trail stage in Morocco, too. Spillway and Kasbah were probably the best in the whole game.

I hope they ditch everything about Dirt 2 and give us a proper rally game again. I do not want another offroad arcade racer stuffed full of stupid American voiceovers and events. Dirt 1 was far superior to it.

To be honest - you're about the grumpiest character I've come across..

Dirt 2 is brilliant, and this will definitely be a must buy for me. Dirt 1 was utter crap - no steering - only pivoting around a center axis. Almost as bad as Motorstorm..

Alot of people focus to heavily on the surrounding image of Dirt 2 rather then the really important things in racing games like physics, which in Dirt 2 are fantastic arcade physics which are kept down to earth (my favourite kind when it comes to arcade racers). Sure it has alot of problems, like the lack of tracks and a somewhat questionable car list, but the fact of the matter is it's still fun especially when you have some friends to hook up with for some good racing like we do in the Dirt 2 thread here on GTP.

I didn't like the Americanisation either, but the underlying game is good enough to keep me coming back. So long as this one has physics on par with Dirt 2 and brings back more old school longer stages and more tracks, I will be happy.

Oh boo hoo. I prefered Dirt 1 because, compared to Dirt 2, it was more like the traditional 'quality' McRae games that we were used to and loved. Dirt 2 was an Americanized offroad arcade racing game and frankly one big insult to the McRae name. It wasn't fun, it wasn't realistic in the slightest, and it was just damned annoying and frustrating both online and offline. Codemasters need to change it for Dirt 3 and NOT give us another crappy racing game with the word 'McRae' in the title.

Flerbizky has a point though...
The americanized, rallycross/x-games stuf was where McRae's career was heading as he had already taken part ina few races of this nature. ;)

You keep sitting on that high horse of yours over online play but we've given you plenty of chances and instructions of how to race with the GTP group yet you haven't taken us up on any offers. You just walked into the Dirt 2 thread, completely ignored the context of what we were discussing and galloped off on your high horse.

Personally I can't wait for Dirt 3. All I really want is more tracks, same physics as Dirt 2 and more balanced cars.

I was thinking the same thing, Dirt 2 has plenty of scope to be a good racing game and we've proven that. I good traditional rally game? Perhaps not, but a good racing game most certainly. As much as I agree it's time to go back a bit more traditional, the hate on dirt 2 is unneccessary.

It's fun, that's what matters, surely?

I saw them designing one of the new stadiums when walking through their dev office, it looked pretty good. Couldn't quite tell where it was supposed to be based, though.

It's ironic that you say that 'cause Dirt 1 took place mostly in America, if I remember right. There was like 1 or two tracks that weren't, but everything else was. The only reason Dirt 2 would be MORE Americanized is 'cause of the X-Games.

I am looking forward to this. After recently getting into Dirt 2, i have become a fan. I am probably about 60-70% done, i am doing the Rally world Championship on Hardcore (hardest setting) and it is trying my patience. I won't give up. Before the championships i was playing on the difficulty that gave (2) flashbacks, Now i have (0). So pushing the limits and keeping it on track and out of a tree/rock or off a cliff is fun but challenging.

Can't wait to see the trails/tracks they have in this new one.

with Ken Block as main aspiration.

After watching some Dirt 2 stuff. It would seem that Dirt 3 is going Similar cars to Dirt 2. Obviously the Fiesta is new.

I would love to have a Fantasy Sports Car Class or classes. That way the 350Z would have some company. Maybe have a Viper, 370Z, GT-R, Challenger, Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, Ford GT, maybe some British sports cars and stuff like that. :P

Really looking forward to this, even if it is coming out after GT5. Dirt 2 was quite good, but let down by the extreme sports style and low number of tracks. Hopefully Codemasters will add some more traditional point to point rally stages like in the older games as well as some cars that currently compete in the WRC and IRC, such as the Citroen C4 WRC, Ford Focus WRC and Peugeot 207 S2000 and some more Group B cars. Another feature from the older games that should make a comeback are the Super Special Stages/Crossover tracks.
This should be one of the few games (along with F1 2010, NFS Hot Pursuit and TDU2) that makes me take GT5 out of the PS3.

Was just reading a article on IGN and something caught my eye:

After months of teasing Codemasters has finally officially unveiled DiRT 3, the concluding part of a trilogy that's provided some of this generation's finest driving experiences.

Following on from the success of DiRT 2 – which was awarded a well deserved 9.0 last year – DiRT 3 promises to be the biggest off-road game yet, featuring an unprecedented amount of content with more tracks and cars than ever before.

The good news for followers of Codemasters' off-road exploits before the DiRT series is the return of more traditional rallying elements, as the game celebrates the history of the sport with cars from the Mini Cooper all the way through to Ken Block's Ford Fiesta via classics such as the Audi Quattro and Delta Integrale.

It also introduces Gymkhana, an extreme driving discipline and an all-new feature that riffs off of this. Dubbed the Compound, it's an open arena for players to enjoy in on and offline play.

A trailer was debuted at this weekend's X Games in Los Angeles, and we're able to bring you it in HD for the first time. It features Block's Fiesta tearing through a variety of terrain, and gives some idea of what to expect in DiRT 3.

We'll be bringing you much more on the game later this week.

If this works, and they do it. It will be great. It's the kind of focus this game needed back at Dirt 2, sure the other stuff was fun. But if I ever go online with people I would much rather do rally than anything else. Plus old rally cars! Epic win!

Sounds good. It certainly sounds like the right direction to go - I saw a race at this year's X-Games and it looked terrible.

I like this, especially that there will be more actual rallying. It also says we can play gymkahna (or however you spell it) online. We saw them blow up a semi in the trailer, so imagine the mayhem!

Dirt 2 had more than rallying, infact that was in a way one of the main probelms. They lost the focus on the origin of the whole McRae series focusing more on Trophy Trucks and Rallycross.

2 race game things I'm less interested in. Rally, rallycross and Formula 1.

They should put every track and car from Dirt 1 and 2 with Dirt 2 Sounds, Physics and Graphics.

Considering Dirt 1 was bigger, and had some really cool cars and tracks; thats all they really need to do.

The explosion in the end spoiled it with a car flying in the background giving the yahooo .. arcade like feel. There is no need of stunts and X games like features. Otherwise the weather effect and the trailer was really nice.

Judging by the ESPN logo in the corner I would guess it debuted during the rally portion of the X-Games, which explains why they would feature the "stunts and X-Games like features".

I like the Rallycross.

I do too, but they were more focused on that than the actual rallying itself. I don't mind rallycross being on it, nor I do mind seeing all the other stuff but the little amount of stages for rally on Dirt 2 was disappointing to say the least. Especially considering the first Dirt had all of those different events but still with full rallies. And even the full Pikes Peak course!
