Disappointed in GT6 graphics

newbie here,

just bought a PS3 and GT6 - a little disappointed by the graphics. thought they would be soo much better. read someplace that the update from previous versions (gt5 or gt4 ...) was only to the newer cars and tracks, the old stuff stayed the same. since i just started, i am on the novice level racing the honda fit, i see shadows skipping and some strange flickers in the racetracks.

i'm cheap so i bought the ps3 rather than ps4 or xbox one. do the graphics get better with new tracks and cars as you progress thru the game?

The graphics of a game is the graphics of the game. Unless you go into the video input setting in the PS3 settings menu and set the HDMI color to full, you're not getting anything better than what it is.

You have to remember the PS3 is 7 years old and even at launch it was a couple years behind a good PC. GT5 and GT6 won't measure up to PS4/XBone graphics or current PC builds graphicswise but for the hardware they're running on they are exceptional.

Have you got HDMI cable going from your PS3 to your TV ?.

Must not be using a HDMI cable with a nice flat-screen. Mine looks pretty close to photo real most of the time.

Was watching a playback of a race a few days ago, a buddy walked in and though I was watching a real race.

EDIT: Whoops, just seen your last post...guess you are using HDMI.

Good day,

Sorry to say it's a wrong move
buying a game that focus on Driving rather that graphics an working on an old generation hardware
is not what comes to my mind when i comes to good graphics
better had to buy the last console gen with forza, drive club or pcars
or just stick to PC Game

GT6 is not the best at graphics, new cars, smart AI, Setting up a car, Real Physics
it's just good at driving a car, mmhh maybe i have to move to another game too

Buys last gen console, complains about graphics...Classic...

Oh You are being a little sarcastic there :P - But but but...but...Here it comes: GT5 had way better graphics than GT6...On the same console. I`m having an ooolld ps3 Fat Boy model with a 40GB harddisc...And ever since day one with GT6, I was very disappointed with the graphics (and 1000 other issues as well lol) - So Your funny answer would be funny and relevant, IF GT6 had a little better graphics than GT5, but not quite as good as Forza...

I know there are lots of different experiences on the GT6 graphic theme, but to me, it`s just strange that GT5 had superior graphics compared to GT6. So I don`t feel "classic" as You expect...I feel annoyed...But cheers anyway

Oh ps... I have HDMI cables and an awesome Philips HD TV....Just telling...
oh and more ps...I know Your reply wasn`t for me, I just needed to answer it...Couldn`t help it...

Looks fine to me for hardware that's almost a decade old...

You can't expect a big jump from the already pushed GT5 in the same hardware, think about the differences between GT3 and GT4 in PS2. In fact they made some important advances in GT6 given the restrictions. Upgraded the night racing with better light effects, upgraded the sky detail with real time stars, resolved or upgraded most of the GT5 popular weak points (pixelated shadows and smoke/dust effects, low resolution rain droplets, damage effects and framerate-tearing issues) and at the same time they increased the car detail during ingame and photomode with the tesellated graphics.

Anyway, have you downloaded all the game updates?

Exactly, and remember the PS3 only has 256mb of RAM. GT5 pushed the limited of the hardware, improvements in an one area will require scarifies in another at this point.

I think the old PS3s have issues with GT6 - not so much with the younger models and certainly those who have larger HDDs seem to run far more smoothly.

Naturally, I'm very pleased with the improvements to game graphics in GT6 - mostly it's been lighting effects improvements which have taken away the almost sterile light quility that GT5 suffered from in places.

I'm pretty happy with GT6. Graphic is good enough for me; besides when I'm doing 100+ mph most of the background pass way too fast for me to notice any details. If you're a clean racer you should be paying attention to the cars ahead of you and the track. I just like the feel of the game, can't explain it.

You can call me a GT fanboy, I have no shame.

Man I`m happy with Your reply, really. Off course it has striked me that it has something to do with my old, fat 40GB ps3...I just never heard that from somebody before...

The worst problems regarding graphics I have, is that a lot of my cars get some ugly, miscoloured spots and patterns on the paint. Some day when it snows green snow I might upload a few pics of those cars...Another issue is that details around the tracks seem inferior to GT5...But I know my ps3 harddisc is close to full. I still have the entire GT5 on the hd that could eventually explain it.

No worries. There's a thread knocking about here somewhere (I'll see if I can find it) where various people have catalogued issues with the older models.

Personally, I think a near full HDD will give you problems too - I seems to rememeber some people who had virtually full discs complaining about various issues.

Unfortuntely, it's a trade-off. Old fat PS3 that is backwards compatible, or a later model that isn't but can cope with the later games.

EDIT: Here you go: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/fat-ps3-issues.291567/

Hopefully this will help.

Thanks a lot...I looked quickly through that thread. But it seems it`s mostly about people who have problems with their fat one; overheating, dying, springs-out...I don`t have those problems, just some graphic issues, and a lot of annoying issues like cars that can`t brake in a straight line and a lot more.... I still enjoy the game a lot, there are lota of cars that handles OK after all... Thanks again, and goood nitey :)

I was afraid of that, as I hadn't read through all of it myself. I'm sure there were a good few posts specifically about graphics handling etc - or maybe that was another thread.

As for the braking issue, unfortunately the PS3 isn't likely to be responsible for that. Try ABS 1 and some experimenting about with the brake balance to suit the cars that do that. Some need more front brake bias, others require less.

Photomode really makes you appreciate the graphical capability PD were able to pull off on a decade old system.
These pictures aren't even the best I've taken in photomode, they're just the ones I have saved on my computer. I'm not gonna deny that there's a lot of hiccups...but it still delivers. Just look at that remarkable pixel density!

I think it's a bit misleading to show photomode pictures because they are actually rendered the moment when you take the picture, that's why it takes some time for the image to pop up. I wouldn't consider them in-game footage but rather what the game would look like if the console was powerful enough to run it at full settings.

I think you missed the point of my post.

Might be, I guess I was just trying to point out that someone who dislikes the graphics won't probably care what the photomode is cabable of.
Na. I'm not paying tribute to the photomode. I was just showcasing that this is what the system can potentially put out at its very best. The gameplay look very close to the still images which is somewhat amazing. if you wanna see how great this game looks, I suggest you go on the nurb (car of your choice) and set the weather to 25% or 50% and time to 1900 or 1950. You'll be blown away with how realistic it looks.

Oddly enough, my old fatty runs much smoother than my super slim, which takes longer to load menus and switch from screen to screen. Textures even draw-in slower, especially in the paint shop. Yeah, my 80GB fatty locks up every once in a while playing GT6, but overall does a better job with GT6 than my 250GB limited edition (blue) super slim. In all actuality, my fatty runs quicker than the super slim in general. I take a lot of pictures in GT6, and routinely transfer them from one PS3 to another (and to PC) via flash drive. The fatty loads and copies the pictures much faster than the super slim.

Ugh, more complaints about graphics. Just buy a PS4. Problem solved.

And play... WHAT?

Seriously, there are no good racers (or much at all) on the PS4 yet. I've had a PS4 since the beginning of the year and it collects dust other than occasionally watching groups of idiots putting on "shows" over PSN Live (mostly getting drunk & talking crap). So far, I am not impressed with this generation of games. It's basically just a continuance of last generation. Gaming has become incredibly stagnant and stale. So far, it looks to be a third generation of mindless shooting.

Disappointed ?

You should be , when you go "cheap" and buy a decade ago designed hardware , now worth 100€ and expect games (GT6) will look like what ... ProjectCars in 4k on a i7 + 2xSLI GTX xxx turbo de luXE special edition + 10gbRAM (worth a tad more than 100€). But hey, let's be racional and blame it on PD/SONY:banghead:.
