And suddenly it struck me.. NONE of us actually ever bought that game, cuz if we had, we would've had a manual and hence, we would've known....

Ouch :trouble:

If you compare driving on track to driving on the road and havent killed yourself yet then you aint going fast enough, comparing the two is like saying walking to the shop to get some shopping is similar to running the 100m sprint final at the olympics, its a totally different ballpark.
To the original question -- Yeh a little wish real cars didnt get damage like in GT tho.;)

update...

had to use the bosses car today to visit one of our branch libraries.
its an holden commodore berlina vx II wagon.

You broke it ? :dopey:

Racing games haven't really improved my driving skills, but it has improved my knowledge of cars and driving styles and techniques. In turn, I have applied some of the stuff I've learned into real world driving. Video games will never make you a better driver, just teach you a few things that you can apply in real life.

What makes me a better driver is driving a freightliner (read: friggin huge) ambulance at 80mph in a 45 with traffic. :p

yup i started with outrun chasehq and road blasters! :D but i never played stuntcar racer hmm...

as for computer games helping me in real life, yeah i think so. it didn't help me learn the basics quicker, i struggled learning clutch and gear changes as much as anyone else but once i passed my test, was able to handle the car much better. i guess it helps you be an advanced driver much more and maintain the car in dangerous situations. i remember one time i was driving in snow and suddenly i hit a patch of ice around a corner and my tail whipped out and instead of panicking i just turned the wheel to opposite lock and released the accelerator. everything turned out fine. i doubt i would have had such quick reactions and knowledge of what to do without playing gran turismo. however it would definitely help new drivers if they were given compulsory driving lessons maybe even tests in advanced driving. say 2 years after you pass.

like famine said passing your test just means you are allowed to drive, you think you are great and you might well be better than a large number of people on the road but you need experience to be a safe and a smooth driver which is only gained through years of driving in all sorts of conditions and locations.

i suggest if you want to be a good driver then try and experience as many types of driving situations as you can, if you've just started out, try early mornings, middays, snow, rain, motorways, country back roads. very different types of people drive at different times of days + late afternoon sun affects you differently to mid-morning sun etc.

Well it affected my driving today:

I was coming home from work behind a Honda Civic CRX, and noticed that it had a gold 'H' and writing on the back, so I followed it to see what it was - ( I wouldn't have been ineterested in the slightest before GT3). It turned out to be a Del Sol SiR version, but I nearly killed myself getting through the traffic on the lanes where I live to get close enough to see!

And I got flashed by a bleeding GATSO as well, sodding things.
The old bill have got one that looks like a white van, they park it in 30mph zones (this one was in the pub car park in my village), and you don't notice the smoked glass window in the back until it's too late.....screeching tyres, nearly collected a double decker bus that was behind me but I was still doing 55 as I went past so that's 3 points and sixty quid gone.....

bad luck m8. you should contest it though, by law they are all meant to be covered in yellow reflective paint, they aren't allowed to be hidden or anything anymore. either they wont send you a ticket (fingers crossed) or you can dispute it. worth looking into i think.

oh and milefile i just meant that whenever i experience evening sunshine its always much lower than in the mornings since i dont get up at 4am, and hence i can't see s**t ;P

Also Jez take note that BY LAW all Speed Cameras must be situated on a stretch of road that is straight for 400 metres (about 1/4 mile) - if they issue you a ticket and a photo and the road isn't like that, contesting it is a formality.

Secondly, 55mph in a 30? No excuse - quit it. You remember the crash near North Aston? The guy in a Toyota Landcruiser thought he'd overtake through the lights there and tooled into someone turning right - he got 15 years for death by dangerous driving recently. I was ON that crossroads earlier that day...

60s are fair game, but 30s are there for a reason - kids. Kids are stupid. They WILL run out into the road even if they see you coming - they have little grasp of judging traffic speed.

Still, happy motoring mate. :D

I was doing 55 when I HIT the 30, cos it starts about 200 yards before any houses etc., I always slow down for the pub, cos I might hit my dad coming out!
This is SOUTH YORKSHIRE police we are talking about guys, i.e. dirty tricks brigade where cameras are concerned.

I have kids myself, so I don't EVER take risks where there may be any about. And overtaking? Have you driven through Donny? You must be joking mate.
:D

In my part of the world there is one of these vans often parked up right where a speed limit lowers say from 60 to 50, a mate of mine said once it was parked with traffic cones arond it next to some road works to look like it was just a workers van! Nice.....
I am certain speed trap devices dont have to have any bright markings this was just a recomendation by the government not an absolute.
These 'Talivans' are manned not by police officers but upstanding well meaning members of our community who I presume volunteer, god there are some sick people around these days.

hahahaha, talivans! i like that. i can't say i've seen any though. i live in london and all the speed cameras that i know of have been painted yellow, you can see them a mile away. having said that there are one or two that aren't and they still flash like crazy most of the times i pass them. never caught me but my dad has been photographed several times and never received anything in the post. apparantly the film is so expensive it takes a while to replace and the cameras keep on flashing but they dont take pictures. i doubt that applies to a talivan though! :(

the reason for colouring them is that cameras AREN'T meant to be a way of raising revenue for the cops (yeah right), they are meant to slow people down in notorious accident blackspots. if you can't see a camera you aren't going to slow down hence the road is just as dangerous as before. i dont agree that they have to be on straight stretches of roads though, i know quite a few that are on slight bends and things...

having said that i was still pulled over by the cops for 'speeding' on a road littered with gatsos, they were going round a large roundabout at the speed most members of the public do 15-20mph, but i know that road like the back of my hand so i take it at the speed limit, 40mph. the car has so much body roll and thin tyres that if i took it any faster i would end up drifting or rolling over. anyway the cops didnt like it (unmarked car), called in backup, followed me for about 5 miles then overtook me, turned the lights on and surrounded me. there were about 8 officers there, instantly started inspecting my car and s**t but gave up after they tested my breath and found i wasnt drinking. but their original claim was that i was doing 60mph on that roundabout... they just couldn't take that i was able to clear it so quickly... heh going back to the thread topic, gran turismo certainly helps me with weight balance on that roundabout. but i dont change lanes so its not _that_ dangerous...

:D

Point taken... Didn't mean to come across as holier-than-thou - hell I've done some not-particularly-legal things on the road myself in the past (and future... :D). There's a 30mph limit that comes in about 400 yards before any houses near Meadowhall (Woolley Edge road), but the road before it is absolutely brilliant for tolling down and totally deserted. I've been known to hit that 30mph limit and still be travelling 4 times over the speed limit, so I know where you're coming from :D

Happily I live "down South" now (although I'll be moving back soon). The police in Ashford are the WORST drivers ever (including the general public in Ashford, who are pretty appalling) and they've not heard of, amongst other things, indicators, GATSOs or Roadcraft... :D

Again, happy motoring :D

They have put a new one on a dual carriageway in donny thats on a bleeding swivel!!!

So you never know whether or not its going to be pointing at you, the cheating swines!

They turn it around every few days, sometimes I go to work and its pointing at me, so I speed down the other side on the way home to find they've turned the bugger round in the middle of the day, honestly its enough to make you want to buy a scooter.

Nothing can be THAT bad... :D

I like that new dual carriageway that goes into Donny from Birdwell, Barnsley. The roundabouts are low and MASSIVE. If you come down it at night, even just on the speed limit, and you don't know the road you can end up ON the islands very easily...

just put my car in for repairs (sum1 rear-ended me). the loaner car is a ford festiva. it is guttless, has no power steering and i didnt think it would reach the speed limit on the freeway! it is THAT slow!!!

I want my car back :(

Just like all Fr0ds, eh? :trouble:

Sorry for bringing this old thread back to life, I was doing a search to know if the question "What car do you drive in real life" had already been covered and this one was among the 330 matching threads.
I wished to give my opinion.

I've had my licence for 14 years now, and I used to drive on the road as if I was on a racing track : dangerously.
I'm now married, father of 3 and GT3 is the best way I found to keep cool when driving in real life : because when I'm about to start driving dangerously, I know I can switch on the PS2 later in the day and be crazy on the (virtual) road.
Another way was not to buy a car that looks and feels like a racing car. Here is attached a picture of my car. It's definitely not designed for racing, and I can put 3 baby seats in it. Double advantage. :D

Never be sorry for bringing up old threads when you are adding to them. That's far better than making a new thread saying the same thing.

I assume you found the "real life cars" thread on the Cars In General board? It's stickied at the top.

Excellent words. Racing has no place - zip, zero, none, no matter how good you think you are. Take it to the track, to the autocross course, or to the computer. End of story.

well, said duke.

i have to say though, i didn't think you were so old you'd been driving for 21 years! man, and i thought this site was for kids! ha!

but it's cool to see old fogies playing PS2 games!

Hey!!! I resemble that remark as I relive my childhood daily :D

21 years ago I would have had my license for well over 12 years.

HOLY MOLY that you just remembered that you need to post pictures of your Cruiser right? :trouble:

Surely you didn't mean that: HOLY MOLY you're old?:trouble:

In fact I clicked on the search option on top of the screen, typed in a lot of keywords using the AND operator and got more than 300 threads. Don't have any clue in which board it was.

The sooner you understand this, the better. But how many young guys, between 16 and 20 years old, do agree ?
