Does Anyone Watch Wrestling? (WWE, AEW, TNA, NWA, etc)

My turn:
PROS from wrestling overall:
  • WWE taking a gamble for once on a Royal Rumble winner, even if it didn't ultimately pan out
  • Ending to the Saya Kamitani/Tam Nakano Career v.s Career match being a rare example of making the "I'm sorry I love you" beats work post-Flair/Michaels from WM24 and not feeling forced
  • Saya Kamitani in general, especially considering her pre-wrestling career in the J-pop idol world *
  • Stardom rebounding from setbacks a second year in a row (last year was their founder being fired, this year was departures and injuries on the top of their roster)
  • Joe Hendry and Dominik Mysterio getting some of the louder reactions at WrestleMania
  • Adam Page simultaneously dunking on ICE and promoting his WrestleDream match with Samoa Joe while making it work amazingly well
  • Kris Statlander finally getting a run as AEW Women's World Champion
  • Charlotte Flair not being the sole focal point of the women's world title scene on her brand in WWE after WrestleMania

NEUTRAL (but kinda funny):
  • WWE and Weekly Pro Wrestling magazine both accidentally spoiling major championship matches (WWE spoiled Vikingo/El Patron while promoting Vikingo/Americano, WPW spoiled the result to the Starlight Kid/Konami match from Stardom Crimson Nightmare)

CONS (that aren't Triple H "not being politically minded" while also cozying up to El Donaldo):
  • SPONSOR ALL THE THINGS THAT AREN'T THE RING MAT in WWE getting excessive
  • Brock Lesnar
  • bloated rosters across both WWE and AEW
  • the fake chants in Mercedes Mone's theme (yes it grates my nerves that much) taking me out of the Belt Collector run
  • fumbling the Cena heel turn
  • the end to Cena/Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 (yes this deserves it's own mention)
  • the brief experiment Stardom ran with the High Speed Championship
    • all that title's defenses for a spell were both 2/3 falls AND a 10 minute time limit. Either/or could work on their own.
    • and then forgot about the belt entirely for like four months
  • SaudiMania being confirmed (even if the livestream comments were dunking on it in real time )

Wrestler who surprised me this year: Hina
  • Not one particular standout trait here. Just a matter of finally putting the pieces together after being overshadowed by her sisters Hanan and Rina (tbf, Hina prioritized education) to become a solid overall worker.

* - had a stint between 2014 and 2015 with AKB48, essentially being capped at a low level background role for...checks notes...being slightly taller and more athletic than average (and their management unofficially saying this to someone who turned 18 during her time with them)

We have a new United States champion from last night's Smackdown taping, its Carmelo Hayes who beat Ilja Dragunov to become new champ and I'm happy for him, I'm quite high on Carmelo and I think he is someone who has a bright future and deserves a push.

Cody Rhodes will defend his WWE title against Drew McIntyre in a three stages of hell match on the January 9th Smackdown in Berlin.

Couldn’t find myself on the Smackdown replay but yeah the United States title match was a good one.

That's an awesome birthday present for me 😄

The last three stages of hell match in WWE was on NXT in 2019 between Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole, the last on the main roster was way back in 2013 between John Cena and Ryback, I think there have only been six in total, its a rare match.

I totally agree, lots of high-quality action involved there. Can't wait to see what matches will take place in 2026. I'm sure there will be some new fresh ideas, maybe even some new folks that will be in the WWE industry.

I wonder what The Edge is up to, I haven't seen him in a match for about 4 years. I still watch old wrestling matches on Youtube, my grandpa is a WWE addict, he's been watching it on the USA network for 20 years. My grandpa will be 86 next July.

Interesting thing to note, in the Vince McMahon courtcase messages have been revealed back in 2022, Vince was always planned to only be gone for 9 months and was always gonna come back either to make a sale or run the company again. The retiring thing was all smoke and mirrors

He also was seen giving orders on the WM39 finish via text to Nick Khan, dispelling rumours that Roman Reigns played politics to retain the title and it was actually Vince McMahons doing.

Cody was really lucky fans hijacked for his title win at WM40 when he wasn't even planned for that either or he would've just been robbed by higher ups twice

The Usos won the world tag titles from AJ Styles and Dragon Lee in a good main event on Raw, Raw was okay but a lot of it was just build up for next weeks show which is the big Netflix anniversary show.

Austin Theory has officially joined the Vision but there some fan theories (pardon the pun!) out there that he is working with Seth Rollins to take down The Vision as revenge for them taking Rollin out. Stephanie Vaquer defended her women's title in an okay triple threat match, Penta returned from injury to help Rey Mysterio when he was getting beaten down by Paul and Theory. Chad Gable could be back from injury by next week.

Smackdown moves to three-hours this week and like I said Raw next week is the big anniversary show with three title matches including the world title match between CM Punk and Bron Breakker, its also a Stranger Things tie-in show which I couldn't care less about as I have never seen it.

So I saw Smackdown and there was a problem for me which I'm not sure you guys had it, its a bit hard to explain but parts of matches would repeat during the show, for example Wrestlers did some moves during matches and it would then repeat the exact same sequence and commentary, it was clearly an editing issue and it happened during Raw as well, I don't know if its just me or if you guys saw it, I watch all WWE on Netflix and don't watch the shows live, that last part might be it!

Anyway it was the first three hour Smackdown and it was quite newsworthy, here's what happened.

Drew McIntyre chose the three matches in the three stages of hell WWE title match with Cody Rhodes next week, its a regular one fall match up first, then its fall's count anywhere and finally its a steel cage match, its a little bit boring and vanilla but I'm sure it will still be good, Drew then broke into Cody's bus, stole a picture of him and Dusty and then burned it in the middle of the ring!

Matt Cardona returned and is now fully with WWE and is on Smackdown, he had a match with Kit Wilson.
Randy Orton returned to RKO the Miz then warned Cody that he sis coming for his WWE title.
There were two title matches, Carmelo Hayes had a successful first US title defense against Jonny Gargano in a good match and then Guilia won back the women's US title from Chelsea Green which was a bit of a weird decision.
Damien Priest beat Aleister Black in a good Ambulance match main event to finally finish their six month long feud.
Sami Zayn returned and then was interrupted by Trick Williams who said he is on Smackdown.
Jordynne Grace was on the show so she maybe on Smackdown too.

Here's what's on the big Raw Netflix anniversary show tonight.

CM Punk v Bron Breakker-world title match.
Maxxine Dupri v Becky Lynch-women's IC match.
The Kabuki Warriors v IYO Sky & Rhea Ripley-women's tag title match.
Liv Morgan v Lyra Valkryia

Adam Pearce was doing his usual social media video to promote the show and he said 'who will break down the walls' 👀

I bet Jericho will show up at the end after the main event. The credits would show at the bottom of the screen, then BOOM

A couple of other things.

Its also a Stranger Things tie-in show, I've never seen it so it doesn't mean much to me. I'm tempted to watch it though.

Its Liv Morgan's first TV match since her injury return, she did have a match in a live event as part of the recent Holiday tour.

In New Japan news, Bullet Club has finally been put out of it's misery.

Also, the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship has been ditched in favor of the Heavyweight Championship we know and love with the IWGP WHC title lineage retroactively being tacked onto the Heavyweight's because nothing can be straightforward

Two title changes last night, Rhea Ripley and IYO Sky are the new women's tag champs and Becky Lynch is the first ever two-time women's IC champion, the women's tag title match was a really good opening match to the show and the women's IC title match was okay but the crowd were quiet for it, Becky cheated to win somewhat when she reversed an ankle lock in to a pin but had her hand on the rope.

CM Punk retained his world title after beating Bron Breakker in a good main event, there was the usual shenanigans with the Vision but the team of Rey Mysterio, Penta and Dragon Lee fought them off and Punk won clean in the ring, AJ Styles got tired of the disrespect Gunther was showing to John Cena and slapped him, they will fight next week. Je'von Evans is officially on Raw.

No Chris Jericho last night, he was still on AEW's roster page yesterday afternoon.

Does this mean the old IC lineage is fully dead or are they going to contrive a way to link that to a new belt and be mostly rid of the headache Kota started?

What the heck is wrong here? Wow, that guy is brave threatening all his opponents in the locker room. Crazy... I can see why the audience booed him. A lot of folks didn't agree with some of what he said.

I didn't see anything wrong with that promo, its a standard heel promo.

Oba Femi beat Leon Slater to retain his NXT title and then left the title in the ring and walked out, so it seems he has vacated it, he is due on the main roster very soon.

I think its a hotfix to the title lineage.

I wish WWE did that with the cluster 🤬 that is the Tag Team titles.

Smackdown will be live earlier tonight because its in Berlin as part of WWE's Royal Rumble European tour.

The big match is Cody Rhodes v Drew McIntyre WWE title match which is three stages of hell, I really think Drew should actually win. I think it will freshen things up a bit and I don't think it would harm Cody at all, he can win it back at the Rumble.

Does anyone know where I can find the attacked by Hooded Masked Figure option in the Rival Actions of WWE 2K25 Universe Mode? I keep seeing WWE do it for theirs but I can't find it for mine.

In absolutely unsurprising news, Maki Iroh has landed in Stardom

In also unsurprising news for entirely different reasons Saki Kashima (the wrestler who drew me into Stardom in the first place) is retiring in April presumably for health reasons
(even with limited ring time mostly confined to her usual "expend as little effort to win" antics in multi-woman tags the past year and change, still had to miss multiple events)
