Does Anyone Watch Wrestling? (WWE, AEW, TNA, NWA, etc)

TKO is in such a rush to try and grab at that minimal cross-promotion money that they're completely tanking interest in the entire event. Nobody wants to watch Bad Opinion Sports Man and Help-Me-Jaysus Country Singer Man as their main event. Literally tripping over dollars to pick up pennies here.

If a two minute comedy match getting a much more positive reaction than the build to what supposed to be the largest match of the year doesn't tell them anything, then they may as well just pack it all off to Saudi Arabia because nobody in America is going to care anymore soon.

While I get the outrage and I have been vocal on it too, it is only one match, there are many others that can steal the show next weekend.

but this situation does outline the problem of the TKO/WWE partnership when there is too much interference from above.

After all that. I'll be in the minority and say I'm more interested in Orton vs Cody than Punk vs Roman.

Is Orton vs Cody the worse of the two, yes, not even close.

Is Orton vs Cody absolutely terrible wasted potential, highlighting the problems of TKO, yes.

But aside from the pipe bomb last week, Punk vs Roman story has been a snooze fest with awkward story beats and the this weels promo just negated most of it anyway.

At least Orton vs Cody has the potential to be so atrocious, it'll end up being funny. I say go all in on the 🤬 show, bring back Travis Scott, have freaking Kermit the Frog show up even and cost Orton the match

Thing is, I don't even see that match going into "so bad it's funny" territory. There's too many outside people awkwardly inserted that don't need to be, Drew dropping the title to Cody to facilitate all this felt so rushed and clumsy that I couldn't really care if Orton takes it, and knowing that most all of this is due to inept corporate meddling leading to a zero-stakes celebrity match next month means there isn't even the usual morbid curiosity of seeing how the writer's room plans to dig themselves out of the hole they made.

I mean yeah, Punk/Roman has been a damp squib of a story but at least it feels like there's something that they've been leading up to. The entirety of Cody/Orton can be summed up as a line graph on a Powerpoint slide labeled "Consumer Anger = Engagement Metrics", and I have zero interest in being a part of that.

If anything, all I'm thinking is "So Drew had to drop the belt for this, huh?"

I'm only hearing what makes the build look so bad its funny

Raw was quite good last night but not great, Oba Femi gave a great promo and the crowd reaction to him was electric, CM Punk and Roman Reigns had another promo segment which was good in which Punk apologized to Roman for taking Sika's name in vain. Liv Morgan looked unhinged in her brawl with Stephanie Vaquer and reporter Cathy Kelley got knocked over and took a bump. Liv Morgan also has a music video out that is quite good.

Cody Rhodes broke into Pat McAfee's studio/set, did some damage with a baseball bat and then took his WWE title back.

There has been reports that WWE talent have no restrictions on what to say about McAfee's involvement during media interviews, they are free to trash him and his involvement and many have so far!

So with WrestleMania in a few days, i thought i would post my overall thought on the card.

Matches I'm looking forward to.
CM Punk v Roman Reigns (the build for this has been great, I think it will be an interesting match)
Oba Femi v Brock Lesnar (it has by far the best build and I think Oba will be dominant and win in 10 minutes)
Six man ladder match for the Intercontinental title (has the potential to steal the entire weekend)
Drew McIntyre v Jacob Fatu (its had a great build and they should just beat the crap out of each other)
Rollins v Gunther (yeah its a random match but it still should be good, Bron Breakker should return during this too)
Finn Balor v Dominik Mysterio (just to see the demon Finn persona back)

Matches I'm not looking forward to.
Cody v Randy (for reasons we have discussed!)
AJ v Becky (I just don't really care for it)
Jade v Rhea (same reason as above but also I don't really like Jade)
The Vision/Speed v Usos/Knight (it just doesn't sound like a good match and I'm pretty stunned its starting the whole weekend)

The other matches I feel more indifferent towards.

Other little gripes I have.
I know that IYO Sky and Asuka could still have a match but the fact they are not on the card right now is pretty staggering.

The women's US title won't be defended on the show.

Both tag titles won't be defended on the show.

There are a few big names who miss out on the show also, like Damien Priest, Carmelo Hayes, Ilja Draganov, Solo Sikoa etc....

And one final thing...
with John Cena hosting, he has to have an interaction with Danhausen...it has to happen!!

Despite me complaining I am actually quite looking forward to the show.

I have a funny feeling that Danhausen is going to accidentally curse Cena, and he's going to spend the whole weekend trying to get uncursed.

What!! That was a crazy move by that guy. I bet Pat had a cow about the damage. That sucks. I hope they can repair his studio set soon. I'll have to look on WWE's website for more info.

it big breaking news in the past hour, she has signed a multi year deal. lots of wrestling news sites and media have reported it.

So Stardom booker Taro Okada ran into an old friend in the States
The Thekla/Taro side story was low-key fun during her Stardom departure

So this weekend is WrestleMania, here is the card for the big show.

Tonight.

Logan Paul, Austin Theory & IShowSpeed v The Usos & LA Knight.

Unsanctioned Match.
Drew McIntyre v Jacob Fatu

WWE Women's Tag Team Championship-Fatal Four Way Match.
Nia Jax & Lash Legend (c) v Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss v Bayley & Lyra Valkyria v The Bella Twins

Women's Intercontinental Championship.
AJ Lee (c) v Becky Lynch.

Seth Rollins v Gunther

Women's World Championship.
Stephanie Vaquer (c) v Liv Morgan

Undisputed WWE Championship.
Cody Rhodes (c) v Randy Orton

--------------------------------------------------

Sunday Night.

Oba Femi v Brock Lesnar

Intercontinental Championship-Ladder Match.
Penta (c) v Je'von Evans v Rusev v JD McDonagh v Dragon Lee v Rey Mysterio

United States Championship
Sami Zayn (c) v Trick Williams

'The Demon' Finn Balor v Dominik Mysterio

WWE Women's Championship.
Jade Cargill (c) v Rhea Ripley

World Heavyweight Championship.
CM Punk (c) v Roman Reigns

And that is it, its an uneven card with seven matches tonight and six tomorrow.

As for Smackdown last night, Royce Keys won the Andre The Giant Battle Royale, the final three was him, Otis and Talla Tonga from the MFT's. There was thankfully minimal Pat McAfee with Randy Orton giving a much needed good promo, we were supposed to have a women's US title match but instead got a number one contenders match with Tiffany Stratton beating the returning Jordynne Grace, Jacob Fatu gave a good promo on top of a police car with no Drew McIntyre last night. Cody Rhodes and CM Punk ended the night with promo's and an embrace as they wished each other luck in their title defenses.

The Hall Of Fame ceremony was also last night and it sounded good, The Good Brothers Gallows and Anderson inducted AJ Styles, Stephanie McMahon was inducted but Linda and Steph's two daughters, she gave a heel speech to end the show. Vince wasn't there for his daughters induction but it name got mentioned to a few cheers.

The Main Event looked like they really lacked a sense of direction and in the end, we're just back to where we started pre McAfee

Three title changes last night, Becky Lynch cheated to win to win back the women's intercontinental title from AJ Lee, Liv Morgan won the women's world title from Stephanie Vaquer with a little help from Perez and Rodriquez, then probably best of all, Paige returned to take the place of injured Nikki Bella and win the women's tag titles with Brie Bella in the fatal four way, it was probably the moment of the night and Paige got a huge pop.

Elsewhere Cody Rhodes retained his WWE title in the main event, Pat McAfee was taken out before the match with a crossroads from Cody and a splash through the announce table from Jelly Roll, Cody and Randy were having a good match until a ref bump and Pat returned only for Randy to turn on him and give him an RKO, both Cody and Randy were busted open in the match but Cody was bleeding a lot by the end. Cody pinned Randy in the middle of the ring but Randy attacked him after and hit him with a punt kick.

Seth Rollins and Gunther had probably match of the night even with the Bron Breaker return and run in, the unsanctioned match was okay but I thought it would be more intense, the six man tag was an average opener and Speed wasn't involved a lot but had a nice moment after the match.

Congrats to Bianca Belair on her pregnancy, no Danhausen last night was a bit of a surprise, it was a low attendance figure of just over 50,000, WrestleMania Hollywood night one from a few years ago had an attendance figure over 80,000.

Last night was pretty good overall and I did quite enjoy it, I'm expecting tonight to be better though.

Night two was so much better then night one.

Punk v Roman was the match of the weekend, 34 minutes of wrestling, storytelling, selling and emotion....no shenanigans, distractions or interference. Roman won the title after two spears on Punk, Punk's body seemed to give up due to exhaustion. Roman did say in the post show that he won't be a part timer and will wrestle through the summer, we will have to wait and see on that one!

The big news otherwise was Oba v Brock, Oba beat Brock and won in under five minutes but Brock is now seemingly retired after he took off his boots and gloves in the ring, he hugged Heyman and waved goodbye to the crowd and he was in tears. Many people thought he might retire at Summerslam so last night was a little surprise. A tribute to Brock and his career deserves its own post.

Trick Williams is the new US champ after beating Sami Zayn in a big moment and he had a great entrance, Rhea Ripley won the women's title from Jade Cargill, Penta retained the intercontinental title in a great ladder match which had some fantastic spots, Demon Finn beat Dominik in a street fight and Demon Finn had a great look and entrance.

Danhausen had his moment with Cena, The Miz and Kit Wilson. Last night's attendance was bigger at 55,000.

Last night felt like a WrestleMania, the first night felt like any other WWE PLE.

Ethan Page and Sol Ruca from NXT showed up on the Raw after Mania last night, so it looks like they are on Raw now.

Jacob Fatu stepped up to Roman Reigns saying he wants and needs Roman's title and lifestyle, Roman said he would give Jacob a week to think about it, Oba gave a promo and just said 'the ruler has arrived' and that was it, Street Profits returned to help out Seth Rollins against the Vision, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes had an interesting segment and Cody's left eye looks really bad, there is some talk that he might have to relinquish the title if it is more serious.

There could and should be more call ups on Smackdown, I think Jacy Jayne is another one primed for the main roster.

So Smackdown after Mania is tonight, absolutely nothing has been advertised for it yet which is fine because it gives the show a bit of intrigue. But I do want to talk about a couple of things from Mania.

The Pat McAfee thing. So it turns out that Pat McAfee actually asked to be dropped from the Rhodes/Orton storyline because of the fan backlash, as you know he was inexplicably inserted into that build by the request of some TKO hierarchy (reportedly Ari Emanuel) because they thought he might help with tickets sales and on the EPSN side of things, it was the most stupid and bewildering thing that WWE had done in years on TV and that is saying a lot! The backlash and hated for it was so visceral that McAfee stepped away meaning the supposed tag match involving him and Jelly Roll is no longer taking place, Pat said on his show this week that wrestling doesn't need saving after all....what a complete waste of time that was!

The fan behavior at the weekend, there have been a number of reports coming out of Mania weekend from wrestlers or other talent who were involved with the show that they were followed and harassed by fans during the weekend, the biggest one being that Bayley and AJ Lee had a phone in their face when they hugged at their hotel which CM Punk then slapped the phone out of the guys hand, it ended up on TMZ and the guy said he wants and apology from Punk (good luck with that) Booker T said he was followed into the bathroom by fans, Drew McIntyre posted thanking the fans who came to the meet and greets but said he was followed around by fans and children at 2am. The wrestlers were booked at different hotels around Vegas but a few said that the security at the MGM Grand was non-existent. This is pretty shocking but sadly not new as they get followed and harassed often at airports, the meet and greets are the best place to see them up close but thanks to WWE/TKO the ticket prices for them are expensive as well.

(starts at 2:37:10)

And Saki Kashima retires a winner in the most Saki Kashima way: sneaky win within fifteen seconds, begs off when her tag partner Syuri asks to restart the match, plays dead, another sneaky win, gets one last piggyback ride to the back 🥹

unrelated edit but spring cleaning day in WWE land and boy howdy spending like half a year hyping up Wyatt Sicks as a group sure felt worthwhile they're all gone
