Okay, some people here aren't too bright.
The car that everybody keeps referring to as the "fan car,"
wasn't powered by a "fan."
The 1971 Lotus 56B was powered by a Pratt&Whitney gasoline turbine,
and it also featured all-wheel-drive.
During the '71 F1 season, the car performed terribly.
However, it nearly won Indy that year.
I believe Emerson Fittipaldi was the driver.
It was a JET ENGINE. Similar to the type developed in the 50's and 60's and first used mainly in the Bell UH-1 "Huey" helicopter in Vietnam. It weighed the same as a comparable gasoline engine, and ran more efficiently on gasoline...would even run on straight kerosene, and make huge black smoke clouds.
Good for war, bad for racing.
