I have ten stars for Charisma, plus a few pieces of armour that further raise Charisma, so I should be okay.

Anyone know where I can find X-01 power armour parts? I have managed to scavenge nearly two full sets, but I am missing a right arm and a right leg.

Okay, so I finished "Blind Betrayal" and saved Danse, but I didn't get the message [Danse idolises you] or the perk. I take it that I have to keep using him as a companion to unlock it?

Also, given the events that transpire, it makes a nice place to exit the Brotherhood of Steel storyline. Not that I ever intended on sticking around with thise fascists.
Picked up an absolute epic weapon today - a two-shot Gauss Rifle. I got it from a legendary albino mirelurk hunter just south of the wreck of the FMS Northstar (the Norwegian raiders are a nice touch). Fully upgraded, it does in excess of 300 damage. I took it for a test run in the Glowing Sea and it chewed through everything - legendary deathskull scorpions, legendary savage Deathclaws, legendary charred feral ghouls; I even found a legendary annihilator sentry bot mk. ii - in the space of about six shots. I call it the "ST-84 Sahelanthropus" because when I am using it (especially in my winterised T-60f power armour), I feel like a Metal Gear.

A place called "Court 35", just North of the Shamrock Taphouse (look it up on YouTube for help). Has a full suit of X-01.

Thanks. I found it while trying to get into the Customs House Tower.

Nice gun!
It is. In fact, my whole arsenal is pretty awesome:
  • "Concerned Third Party", which was Kellogg's pistol
  • "Cry Havoc", a combat shotgun with incendiary rounds that do 15 points area of effect damage
  • "Bad Samaritan", a .45 combat rifle that adds 10 points of plasma damage to each shot (and on very, very rare occasions, can liquefy an enemy on the spot)
  • "Wicked Butterfly", a .50 sniper rifle that ignores 30% of the target's defence
  • "Scorched Earth", a laser rifle that recharges critical shots 15% faster
  • "No Tomorrow", a super sledge that does extra damage against super mutants
All of them are fully-upgraded. My weakest weapon does 88 damage.

Wow, I ran into an Invisible Assaultron the other day. And it managed to kill me in one hit, which was pretty surprising because I wear pretty decked-out armor. It took a while to drop the Assaultron too, which is also surprising since my current weapon loadout can deal with pretty much anything. Guess I should rethink my current arsenal..

Yeah, I hate Assaultrons. They're the first things I look out for any time I see the Gunners. MacCready's perk works wonders for taking them on. I don't think that there's really any class of weapon that works better than any of the others, so ballistic is probably your best bet. Fully modified, a combat rifle can get off four shots in VATS, especially with armour that offers a 10% reduction in AP. If you're running into Assaultron Dominators - the invisible model - then you're probably around the same level as me; enemy variants are scaled to your level to keep you on your toes. I'm currently at level 73 and have 160 AP.

Yeah I'm only Level 53. Forgot to work with McCready to get that sweet perk he has, actually. I heard it's bugged so that nearly every time you go for a headshot in VATS it's a 95% chance, regardless of distance.

It is, but it doesn't take the challenge out of some of the bigger and badder enemies out there. If anything, it's good for helping you clear some of the minor enemies that you encounter without slowing you down. I regularly run into band of raiders in Boston Common and they're just plain annoying because they're usually at a very low level; MacCready's perk is good for making short work of them, but it doesn't take the challenge out of larger enemies - high-level mirelurks, gunners and super mutants (wait until you meet the warlord and primus) still take dozens of shots to bring down.

MacCready is pretty tough to raise affinity with, though. You have to be just enough of a jerk to win him over without aggravating non-hostiles, and he's got a pretty long and involved quest to complete.

Nice. I carry the following with me all the time:
  • "Rain Man", which is the two-shot combat rifle normally known as Overseer's Guardian, modified with .308 ammo
  • "Boom Town", a combat shotgun normally known as "Les Fusil Terribles" does 25% more damage with more recoil
  • "Fiaraga", a Guass Rifle with incendiary rounds for 15 burn damage
  • "Starfleet Prototype", a laser rifle that does double damage to targets with full health, really great for clearing out low level weaklings, and I simply can't burn enough Fusion Cells, I have over 4000 and I use it ALL the time.
  • "Greenskin Slayer", a Chinese Officer sword that does 50% extra damage against Super Mutants.
  • Fragmentation Grenades

I'm fairly positive that modders will add a Hardcore mode similar to New Vegas' hardcore mode. Sadly I think that requires the GECK, which hasn't been released yet.
I think with the settlement feature now, Hardcore mode would suit this game much more.

Settlements will probably become similar to SimCity (or the Sims in general) since you now have to make sure every settler is fed, well-hydrated, etc., as well as maintaining your own character.

Also, story question:
If I complete "Underground Undercover", will I become an enemy of the Institute?

You cannot do this quest if you're an enemy of the Institute as you will not be able to travel there, you'll have a decision to make, which one you choose effects relations with either, you'll know when you get to that stage

I thought that might be the case. I just wanted to be sure before I progress any further with the quest. I don't think that I will be siding with the Institute, but to be honest, I don't know enough about them. I have noticed that Bethesda have the maddening habit of only telling half the story. Sometimes, it works, like at Dunwich Borers. But here, I have not only been inducted into the Institute, but Shaun has named me as his successor and I still have no idea what they are actually doing. I know that they are trying to start up their own nuclear reactor, and they keep insisting that they are humanity's best chance of survival, but so far they haven't told me how they plan on doing it. I will wait until I know more before deciding, but so far, the Railroad and the Minutemen have the most clearly-defined goals (the Brotherhood of Steel do too, but it amounts to enforcing their will on the Commonwealth).

 @prisonermonkeys My little brother is a big Fallout fan so I'm having him as my co-pilot since I'm terrible at RPGs, but after TW3 I need more worlds to get lost into and I have a few weeks vacation to sink my teeth into this.

It is overwhelming I agree at first so I decided to let him play first since I've already died countless times trying to get to
Diamond City
which either means I need to use an alternate route or I need to do some side stuff first.

@sems4arsenal - Diamond City is a tough journey early on. The further south you get, the tougher the game becomes.

A few suggestions:
Check out some of the locations around Sanctuary, which are relatively small and filled with some fairly easy enemies. Discovering new locations also gives you an experience bonus.

Visit Abernathy Farm and speak to Blake Abernathy; he'll give you a fairly straightforward quest. Sully at Thicket Excavations also has one for you.

Speak to Sturges in Sanctuary and build up Sanctuary's infrastructure; everything you place gives you experience points, and the whole thing is a quest, so there is a large experience payout at the end.

Once you have levelled up a bit, Preston will give you a quest to Tenpines Bluff. It will probably be the most difficult task that you do so far, but if you can manage it, you should be ready to go to Diamond City.

There are several factions working in the area, and each has their own set of secondary quests which are continuous, so if you need some more experience, take a detour and do a quest or two.

In terms of your perks, you should have at least two points of luck. Sink your early points into the first two tiers of the luck branch, which will help you find more currency and ammunition. You should also focus on the Life Giver and damage resistance perks under endurance, and the medic perk under intelligence; these improve your damage resistance, add extra health, and increase the effectiveness of curative items. You should also get the second-tier Local Leader perk (under charisma) as this lets you establish supply lines between settlements, and makes all resources available at all of your settlements, which makes modifying weapons and armour easier.

Carry multiple weapons at all times (you can favorite them through the Pip-Boy) so that you can respond to whatever situation you're in. Pistols work well against raiders and mole rats, but even when they're fully modified, they're still pretty weak. They're next to useless against the likes of mirelurks, but shotguns are very effective.

Use VATS to figure out strategies. Mirelurks are quick, but if you target the legs, you can cripple them. Deathclaws deal massive damage, and their size makes their arms a ranged weapon, so if you cripple the arms, you limit their effectiveness, and if you go for the tail, you throw them off-balance.

Work with your companions as they become available (and keep them all in one place so you know where they are). If you develop your relationship, you unlock additional perks.

Take fusion cores out of power armour when you're done with it. If you leave them in, NPCs can nick it.

A few other pointers:
Get a melee weapon as soon as possible. It will help you save ammunition. There's nothing worse than being caught in a swarm of feral ghouls with no bullets.
Trudy at the Drumlin Diner has one. It's expensive - 1300 caps - but worth it.
Hoard as much .38 ammunition as you can. Pipe pistols and rifles are the only weapon types that use it, and it's readily available early on, but the pipe weapons are the weakest in the game. Ammunition doesn't weigh anything, so you can carry as much as you like and you can sell or barter it at a rate of one cap per bullet.

Store weapon and armour mods in workbenches. They don't weigh much individually, but it's unnecessary weight. It's the same with some curative items - I have about forty yao guai roasts in my inventory, and they all weight half a kilogram each, so that's twenty kilograms of dead weight that I am carrying because I have over a hundred and fifty stimpaks, and they don't weigh anything.

Have your settlements farm as much corn and as many tatos as possible. These are key ingredients in vegetable starch, which gives you five units of adhesive. Adhesive is needed for just about every modification, so you will need a lot.

@prisonermonkeys
I never had much issues with ammunition in this game. In fact I have a stupid amount of them. The Scrounger perk really does help in finding more ammo. But it also helps to carry around a nice melee weapon.

Also @sems4arsenal look out for skill magazines. The magazines give some nice little perks (like new paint jobs for power armor), but they're a bit difficult to spot. More reason to be thorough when you scavenge locations (but bear in mind that magazines in this game are scripted to be placed in the places they're found in).

Bobbleheads, too.

I had problems early on, but only because I was using a pipe rifle. There was a glut of ammunition available, so what it lacked in stopping power, it made up for in longevity.

Beta patch is out on PC since Friday, see changelog (possible spoilers). Looks like the settlement bug is fixed and some other nice improvements/fixes.

@sems4arsenal As you cross the bridge out of Sanctuary Hills, you'll see a tall white tower to the right. At the base of that tower is some purified water and medical box, just beyond that in some bushes you'll find a yellow crate with goodies inside, this seems to restock quite quickly. I'm sure Bethesda put it here as a helping start.
Try talking to people for side quests, and check terminals, for instance the Wicked Shipping gives locations for abandoned trailers in the commonwealth with the key next to the terminal.

@NLxAROSA At least MacCready's perk is being fixed, bit too powerfull
