Never tried LMA Manager, but I will just say that be prepared because FM is incredibly deep, and you really have to come to terms with it on a lot of levels to have continued success. I know a lot of people thought last year's game took a step up in difficulty over 2012, so we'll see how this one is.

I know they are very deep and realistic, I wouldn't know where to start so ill probably be back on here asking for pointers and advice!

Really the best place to check out is the SI forums. I really learned how to play the game by reading Cleon's posts and SFraser's posts, but there are a few others as well.

Check out this thread. You have to scroll down a bit before you get to the tutorials. They are great though.

FM Links and Tutorials

So yesterday I bought FM '13, registered and downloaded steam and played for two hours last night, I played with Man United (I support them) on Classic mode and its fine, it runs fine on the laptop despite my reservations, only played a few friendlies so far and one weird thing is that I have Cabaye in my team from the start and he doesn't and hasn't played for the club, he plays for Newcastle, there is also no Anderson in the team and he does play for United...

Not that I recall no, i haven't played Cabaye as he is injured and he doesn't have a shirt number, he's definitely there as i clicked on his name and his stats came up like normal, when i go back on it later do you think it'll go back to normal?

Did you join as the manager at the start of the season or partway in? Perhaps the team had already negotiated some sort of deal for him. I'd check his contract status to see what's going on with that.

Ahh, actually come to think of it they had already played one friendly against Ajax before i joined, i joined in late July...

Also Anderson is set in the reserves for United by default - but as you said, with the time you joined them in he might already have moved so I don't know.

Well im not that bothered now, Cabaye for Anderson, ill take that!

Small update, Anderson was sold to Juve for 9 mill and we bought Cabaye for 20 mill before I joined...

Im staying with United for now we are doing well in second place just a point off top and comfortably through the group stage of Europe, only problem is RVP hasn't scored in 10 games!...

Well i was considering FM14 but its obviously not very realistic if you got 9 million for the fat Brazilian.:sly:

Lol United paid 10 mill for him from Porto so Imagine they wanted to make as much back a possible

Also, y'know at the start of a new game you can start unemployed what happens then?, do you get job offers to start your career?

In FM13 ya do im still enjoying that, obviously Roman is unlikely to come calling.:) As ared i'd obviously turn him down flat anyway.:sly:

If you start unemployed you will get offers based on the reputation you chose for your manager. Fair word of warning though that the game is a completely different beast when you are a LLM (low league manager). It's quite difficult and most players who choose that route understand that it can take 2-3 seasons to get anything going.

Ok thanks, I was going to try it but that has put me off a little, I only started with United with my first go to get used to the game and feel that I am used to it now..

If you want to read up on it, check out the LLM threads at the SI forums. LLM can be one of the most rewarding ways to play the game because there's so much you can bring to a team like that once you've achieved success, but it's probably the most hardcore way to play FM.

Anyone playing the Beta version of FM 2014?, mine is having trouble working on my laptop...

I've seen that this is coming out for the PS Vita and I might get it so I have 2 questions

1) does classic mode reduce the amount of leagues and teams you can play as

2) is this a game where you have to decide everything yourself or can you let the game handle a few things

(sorry if I didn't make the questions very clear)

As I understand it, not very experienced though, there are two game modes. Classic (More streamlined) and the other mode (Full Experience).

Classic as it is makes it easier and gives you less to do. But in both modes you can give responsibilities to your staff to lighten your workload.

I can't answer your first question though.

Just installing my copy of FM2014 now.

Looking forward to have a game that I can just relax with whenever im bored or tired, in the sense that it's not fast-paced like FPS or other games.

I have a FM12 CD but no code as I got it off a friend who doesn't want it no more and forgot the email he used for steam.

FM14 is here so as usual I started out with Eastbourne Borough as they are my local team and the team I support. This years squad is once again lacking in players and team depth so with little finances I had to sign 3-4 players and the make most of my 4 full season loanees. So on I went and here is my first season!

Season 1, 2013/14

Eastbourne Borough (Skrill South)

Media prediction: 15th
Board expectation: top half

Estimated value: 110k
Season ticket holders: 300

Transfer budget: 0
Wage budget: 3.6k p/w (currently spending 3.5k)

Players in: 4 (free agents) + 5 on loan (1 loan terminated)
Players out: 1 (released)
Staff in: 0
Staff out: 0

Pre-season:

Pre-season was pretty poor although we did have some tough fixtures, losing 5-2 to Forest U21's wasn't great but they had some talent. Losing 3 nil to the ex-league 2 Barnet at home was a tough result to take although we go on to beat them later on. A bore draw with Thamesmead was again poor, then finally a win against Met Police. Ending with another draw to Ashford, again poor result but pre-season is just about fitness as they say.

The League:

The league started off very sloppy as I was fiddling around with different tactics and trying to find a formation that worked. The first six games were interesting, drawing the first two, then losing the next two and then winning the last two, putting us in a mid table position.

With a few changes to tactics and trying to find my starting 11 I soon picked up the pace and got together some consecutive wins and some solid performing draws. Currently I am in March 2014 and havent been beaten since the 7th of December although I have been getting a lot of draws. Let's take a look at the league coming into the final weeks of the season.

We are sitting in a solid 3rd place and if we keep our heads up we will achieve play offs with ease, although I fear fitness may hit me due to the fixture congestion towards the end of the season, but hopefully we can fight through it and not fall to that dredded 6th place spot!

FA Cup and FA Trophy:

We had an average run in the FA Cup getting to the 4th qualifying round. I never seem to do well in the FA Cup when managing clubs in the Conference N/S and below. As I was watching the 4th qualifying round draw and saw that we would face Barnet again my head dropped and we lost 2 nil.

FA Cup 2nd Qual. Round - Burnham 3-2 (H)
FA Cup 3rd Qual. Round - St. Albans 5-1 (A)
FA Cup 4th Qual. Round - Barnet 2-0 (H)

In the FA Trophy on the other hand we had great fun! Storming through the rounds beating some strong sides like Braintree and Barnet (finally beat them) for example. We made it all the way to the final which is yet to be played at Wembley against Wrexham who won the FA Trophy last year! It will be a tough game but I'm sure the boys will be up for it and maybe I can win the FA Trophy again like I did back on FM12.

FA Trophy 3rd Qual. Round - Concord Rangers 4-3 (A)
FA Trophy 1st Round - Barnet 1-0 (H)
FA Trophy 2nd Round - Romford 1-1 (A)
FA Trophy 2nd Round Replay - Romford 3-3 - won on penalties (H)
FA Trophy 3rd Round - Braintree - 2-1 (H)
FA Trophy 4th Round - Cambridge - 2-0 (H)
FA Trophy Semi Final (1st leg) - Grimsby - 3-3 (H)
FA Trophy Semi Final (2nd leg) - Grimsby - 1-0 (A)
FA Trophy FINAL - Wrexham - (TO BE PLAYED)

End of Season Thoughts:

(WILL UPDATE SOON AS I FINISH THE SEASON IN 8 GAMES)

Back to my favorite obsession... @MUSC4EVER, you still playing FM14? I just downloaded mine the other day. So many things you can do in FM, and they all take so long. :sly: Started a save with York City. Haven't played much yet though, still getting caught up on the new positions/roles and tactical system.

I've been having trouble with Steam on my laptop, it says that it needs to be online to do an update and I don't know whats wrong or where to start, I haven't played it since about a week before Christmas....

If it's a PC laptop then I think I know your issue. Restart your laptop in safe mode with networking (press F8 at the bios screen or other). Then once it's in safe mode go ahead and try to open FM14. It won't open, but what it will do is allow you to make the update to Steam. I don't know why this happens, but every time I install a new game from Steam I have to do this, and on other occasions I have to do it as well, I'm guessing when they update their service.
