Haven't we had this before? Pretty pathetic.

Definitely not good. It's very very lucky that we didn't see a similar incident to Massa/Hungary, it's made a real mess of Button's car but thankfully not of Button himself.

That was a funny race. The one time someone has crashed and it turned out to benefit them. (Hamilton hit the wall at Tabac and got a puncture from it. He pitted and switched to wet tires which ended up benefiting him greatly if memory serves.)

I remember when Force India radioed Fisichella before the restart who was in 4th telling him to not mess anything up.... 30 seconds later Kimi rear ends him!

This is inevitably going to bring about more discussion on closed cockpits, and having a manhole cover flying dangerously close to the cockpit isn't exactly a good look when there's currently a lawsuit hanging above the FIA and F1 with the Jules Bianchi incident, despite the fact a closed cockpit wouldn't have made too much of a difference with Bianchi's incident.

The problem is that the cars produce more and more downforce, which is what pulls the manhole covers out. Those manhole covers would be fixed in place for the weekend, but all the race organisers can go on is what worked last year. If the cars are producing more downforce this year, it is evidently enough to pull the covers out.

Add to that the sideways load - Rosberg's rear left was heavily loaded up when he flipped the cover. I was watching on a SkyGo stream so I couldn't quite see if the cover was a little loose before hand - any news on that?

Monaco 2010 a manhole cover worked loose and destroyed Rubens Barrichello's rear suspension.
I'm certain I read that either when high downforce wings were first used, or when ground effect came in that the drains at Monaco had to be welded shut because the cars were constantly pulling them out.

Ricciardo fastest in FP2, I guess there is hope for some excitement this weekend. If we also get rain on Sunday, anything can happen.

In fairness that's a little out of context, Rosberg didn't approach Hamilton's time until the end of the session when the track was fastest. Throughout the session Hamilton was about a second faster at most points. BBC.

Totally different sport, but feel Allen Iverson said it best:

I knew I had seen this happening before...

I am blown away that Ricciardo is .6 over the field - the new Renault power unit must mean a whole lot - and that on a circuit where power is not paramount. Magnussen's Lotus with the same power was totally unremarkable, except for its massive oversteer. Ricciardo seemed glued to the road on his ultrasofts, but many others had them snap loose. Setup changes may help tame the ultrasofts, but I doubt there's to be any opposition to a Ricciardo steamroller, at least in qualifying.

Not really, most onlookers seemed to be commenting on how fixed the rear was - we know it's a good chassis and it was proved today. Even Renault only reckon his power unit is worth 0.2 over this lap.

The Renault chassis is nowhere near the Red Bull to begin with. They've struggled to make it out of Q3 where Red Bull have made it with ease. Magnussen has also said that they've somehow made the car worse.

No shortage of excitement in the first two practice sessions! However my favourite moment was this rather comedic exchange between Di Resta, and Crofty...

Paul Di Resta:
"I wonder why you would say yes to hosting a fashion show?"

David Croft: "Because...I...like to show my versatility."

Paul Di Resta: ...

David Croft:
"Don't give me that look you were in it once!"

I'm just catching up on FP1 & 2, so I'm a little behind....but the moment in FP1 where the guys are talking about McLaren's claim that they will be the first to dethrone Mercedes, immediately followed by Alonso on the radio, "worst outlap of like, ever....ya." Timing was priceless

Forecasting the weather in Monaco is notoriously difficult, for now the Met have downgraded the chance of rainstorms on race day from 60% to 40%. BBC.
