The lights are back on as Formula 1 heads back to its original night-racing venue. The Marina Bay circuit has had a few layout tweaks over the years, but still remains the hardest physical challenge for the drivers all season. A driver's fitness is trained to survive the 2 hours of heat, humidity, bumps, incessant cornering and closeness of walls that is experienced under the floodlights here. Often a sticking-point of a circuit for dominant cars, the layout seems pretty similar to Baku last week, where McLaren were particularly poor, compared to the seeming dominance of the MCL39. Piastri had a race to forget and Norris was unable to capitalise too much, while Max Verstappen's resurgence in the last few races must be starting to worry McLaren a bit. Who can tame the streets as we head to the SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX!

This is the race for Ferrari. For Charles at least.
McLaren should be better here, and the Red Bull doesn’t usually like the bumps. We could have a good race.

Yeah, expecting Ferrari to do well here, too.

I feel bad for Lewis. RIP, Roscoe. 😔

Hopefully no McLaren shenanigans.

Lewis seems to be getting much more competitive in recent races so maybe if he can get to Q3 and put in finally a decent lap (Bulldog power), he could beat Charles.

Even Red Bull with Max last year qualified and finished second so they have a chance to do something special coming with probably a much more competitive car this year. It is almost like McLaren need an update, otherwise they could be in danger of losing the WDC given circuits coming up are all ones Red Bull generally are strong at. This will be a good test if Red Bull is now completely the class of the field and this generation of cars or there is still some weakness to it and they just so happened to be great on circuits that flattered their characteristics but regardless, they have made a sizeable step from where they were so I think it makes them favourites for second in constructors if Max keeps on winning.

Now the teams have two options: either their drivers must wear the mandatory cooling vests or their cars must carry more ballast.

Whether the drivers elect to use the vests or not, the rules state that their cars must be fitted with the necessary equipment to make the vests work – specifically the pumps, coolant reservoir and heat exchanger.

Any driver then choosing not to wear a vest must carry additional ballast.
And this is for a night race. Lucky they don't race there earlier in the day , only a madman would schedule something like a pre-quali sprint race in such a location ...

I can't imagine any driver electing not to use it.
Especially since there's zero benefit of weight reduction since they would add ballast to make up for it anyway. At that point a driver would only be putting their own health at risk for no reason.

Russell hits the wall in FP2 and loses front wing.

And now Liam Lawson has smacked the wall off of turn 17 and lost his right front tire.

Presumably someone has checked all the pros and cons.
Id be a little concerned that heat in the cockpit would eventually thaw the cooling packs and then you would be wearing a slowly warming blanket that there was no way you could get rid of.
What is the effect on the harnesses as the packs on your back melt and turn back to liquid ?

Leclerc just hit Norris pulling out of the garage. Norris with a front wing broken.

"Ferrari will invent mirrors one day, I hope" - Oscar Piastri, FP1.

Hasn't happened yet.

If this was Colapinto or Botoletto we all just say 'yeah figures' but these are 2 of the drivers at the very pinacle of motorsport.
And i can only assume that Ferrari now get their pit release guy from a bunch of rando's outside the nearest carwash. The only criteria being who fits the uniform.

They have to penalize unsafe release harder. It’s absolutely ridiculous - especially in training.
Car coming - wait. No car coming - drive.

How hard can it be to figure that one out?

This sort of thing is usually just a fine for the team if it happens in practice, but it's been happening so often they may need to rethink that and up the penalty.

It will probably be some meaningless 10k-20k euro fine which is pocket change to these teams.
Hopefully Lando got away with just damage to the front wing but with wings these days costing well north of 100k that should be the baseline for the team fine and more importantly it should count towards the cost cap !

Bingo. Apparently 10k is a more “severe” penalty

“Having noted precedents for this type of breach, the Stewards are of the view that this breach warrants a more severe penalty than previously applied hence the penalty above is imposed."”

McLaren will be summoning Ferrari to their garage soon to make sure all is fair with Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen, the Mercs and the McLarens all within 1 tenth of a second at the end of FP3.
Bring me that in qualification!

Hamilton under investigation for a breach of red flag regulations. He sped up quite a bit after passing a stopped car, not sure if it's for that or the speed he entered the pit lane.

No penalty for Hamilton

"Regarding the pit lane entry, the car’s speed was marginally higher than that of other cars in comparable situations, but the driver maintained full car control at all times and did not drive in a manner that could be considered unsafe.

"While the Stewards consider that a greater reduction of speed would have been desirable under the circumstances, it is concluded that there is no evidence of a breach of the applicable regulations."
Lewis is one of the GOATs, he knows how fast he can drive in to the pits. Go away stewards.

Well done to Bearman for making Q3. When he's not making dumb red flag mistakes he is seriously quick.

Kimi had a top lap deleted for track limits, mega slide at the start of his other one and is still in the top 3. If he hooks it up in Q3 pole is absolutely on.

Mercs and Max have some pace. Kimi's slide was a brown pants moment.
Both the teams who bought front wing upgrades for this race, incidentally (only Max at Red Bull, Yuki misses out).

Come on Kimi!

Russell right on the edge - bumps the wall on the way to a 29.1. Wow. Mega banzai lap and miles clear of everyone bar Max.
Give him the contract Toto.
