June 2017 - E3 2017

===================================================================================
https://www.forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/fm7_e3_announce

"Today, during the Xbox E3 2017 briefing, we unveiled that the best-selling racing franchise of this console generation is back with a premiere Project Scorpio experience, Forza Motorsport 7, and in continued collaboration with Porsche, debuted the Porsche 2018 911 GT2 RS as the cover car. "

===================================================================================
https://www.theverge.com/games/2017/6/11/15770948/e3-2017-forza-motorsport-7-scorpio-play-story

"Last month, I went to Turn 10’s offices to see Forza ahead of its E3 debut. I spent a little under 30 minutes playing the game, and the rest of the trip speaking with the team that brought it to life."

===================================================================================
https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/11/...motorsport-7-pc-vs-console-microsoft-xbox-one

"This also the first full Forza Motorsport game to hit PC. (The series has tested the Windows 10 water with Forza Motorsport 6: Apex and Forza Horizon 3.) And if you want the cars, the tracks, the raindrops on the windshield to look their absolute, pixel-perfect best, the Windows 10 version — with the help of some top of the line GPU — will be the best choice."

"Forza Motorsport 7 content director John Wendl told us that there's a 30 percent surplus on the GPU, even when running the game at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. That's surprisingly not-close to the Xbox One X's limits."

===================================================================================
https://news.xbox.com/2017/06/13/e3-2017-forza-motorsport-7-hands-on/

"[...]the more cars you collect, the better your rewards are going to be. Every time you level up, you gain a milestone reward that can be in the shape of cool driver gear or discounts of cars. Continue collecting cars will place you in a better tier to receive more exclusive rewards. This comes to the heart of making car collection a larger point of progression than your actual success on the track. Racing placement helps, sure. But if you want better rewards, you’ll want to build up your collection of cars."

===================================================================================

  • How they came about the Porsche GT2 RS reveal, and kept it secret before E3.
  • What is the vision for Forza Motorsport 7? (Showcase of Xbox One X technology, adding more "humanity", competition, and "imperfection" to Forza)
  • Forza Drivers Cup (Career): Series of championships, players have freedom to use whatever cars they like, set race lengths, unlock driver gear etc. Plus a "big surprise" once you complete it, something that's worth going back for again.
  • VR: "We don't have a lot to announce about that right now"
  • Custom Public Lobbies: In-game, no. Use Xbox features like Looking for Group etc.
  • Gifting: "I don't know the answer to that, Bill might" (sounds like a No to me)
  • Auction House: Yes
  • Penalties: Doesn't sound like there are any in-game, Dan instead brings up Forza Racing Championship and Gfinity's adjudication of it.
  • Marshals: Select community members with more power in lobbies.
  • Spectating: New camera options.
  • Off-Road racing: No
  • Widebody kits: Yes
  • "Forza Edition cars" (sounds like the Horizon Edition concept from Forza Horizon 3)
  • PC version of livery editor supports mouse and keyboard.

===================================================================================
https://ar12gaming.com/articles/forza-7-adjudication

"When asked about how Turn 10 plans to tackle the issues that plague online play in Forza Motorsport 6, Giese said the new Adjudication System in Forza Motorsport 7 will penalize players who cut corners, crash out other players, or do something else that could potentially give you an advantage or wouldn’t be considered sportsmanship. These penalties will see the game “take you down,” Giese said, revealing that players who cheat or race unclean could face added time on to their final lap and race total, or have their result marked as ‘dirty’ in Rivals."

===================================================================================
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/forza-motorsport-7-news-and-interviews.356620/#post-11848544

  • "We reimagined everything regarding the driving experience."
  • Cars feel violent at high speed.
  • Driver Gear: Sounds like full suits and not a "mix and match" of items.
  • Drivers will be seen in pre-race, post-race, multiplayer lobbies.
  • E3 attendees get an E3-exclusive driver suit in the full game.

===================================================================================
http://shoutengine.com/TheSmokingTire/dan-greenawalt-forza-7-at-e3-37671

  • "Forza" was the initial development codename for the series, before becoming the final name.
  • A bit of talk about the (then upcoming) Forza RC finals at Le Mans.
  • All finalists at the Forza RC play(ed) on controllers, although 1 of the drivers qualified with a wheel. (Matt Farah was not happy about controller use at top-level play and challenged Dan on it for 20 minutes)
  • Dan's vision is to create the next generation of automotive fan (5 year plan, highly accessible game etc.)
  • Around 10% of players at most use a wheel in Forza (slightly out-dated information).
  • Turn 10 will take "a few years" to develop "the next form of motorsport" (Forza RC).
  • Friction Assist "is kind of like driving off-road in Forza Horizon".
  • "Somebody needs to see if a Rock Band microphone will work with Forza Motorsport 7"
  • Force feedback has been reworked from previous games.
  • Suzuka and Mugello had to be rebuilt from scratch as the Xbox 360 era assets weren't good enough to work from.
  • @ManteoMax crunched all the data of requested tracks and sent it to Turn 10 to help them select their locations for the game.
  • A new system has been added to help define clean/dirty laps, all track boundaries have been redefined.
  • Dan's favourite racing game growing up was Ferrari 355 Challenge.
  • Camber and caster tuning settings in-game don't affect the level of force feedback you get form a wheel. Force feedback scaling/strength is only done via wheel (controller) settings.
  • When you select Manual w/Clutch as an assist, gears change faster compared to Manual or Automatic, but the skill requirement is higher as you need to press an
    extra button to shift.
  • Turn 10 prefer to add the higher trim versions of cars into their games (like a Nissan GT-R Black Edition rather than a standard GT-R).
  • "Part of what we do is to throw ideas away (in the concept stage) and let the strongest survive."
  • 1973 Porsche Carrera RS confirmed.

===================================================================================
http://hooniverse.com/2017/06/21/podcast-episode-207-dan-greenawalt-and-forza-7/

  • Dan talks about his Ford Shelby 350 and the (upcoming at time of recording) Forza RC finals.
  • Forza RC's status at Le Mans was due to the ACO taking notice of eSports.
  • No dangling scarves on the older race suits. (No "death by supercharger" ;) )
  • One of the "fun" suits is a Mummy.
  • Dan gives no definitive answer to question about Rallycross to bring up that each Car Division can be its own Championship in Single Player.
  • Dan says that the focus is on cars, when asked about bikes. (So no, no bikes in Forza)
  • Controllers have inherent assists, such as input smoothing during steering. One of the reasons controller players are as fast as wheel users.
  • Dan talks about how Turn 10 conducts tyre physics research.
  • Tyres are now affected by track surface temperature.
  • Original roads (Prague, Rio, Dubai) are laser-scanned but then modified to be more gamer-friendly (wider roads, smoother turns etc.).
  • More talk about the Shelby 350.
  • A bunch of audience questions, but no new info revealed.

===================================================================================
http://shoutengine.com/CarStories/dan-greenawalt-creative-director-for-forza-motorsp-39867

  • Dan Greenawalt talks to Shout Engine about Forza.
  • Interview took place around the time of E3.
  • Turn 10 staff = Microsoft staff.
  • Dan started back in 1997 on sports games and moved into racing games, starting with the Midtown Madness series, then Project Gotham Racing and finally Forza.
  • First 2 Forza Motorsport games were "high quality, but late", required a restructure for Forza Motorsport 3.
  • Forza's goal is to shape automotive culture for the future.
  • Car selection process: "Our goal is to spread our bets", give players a little bit of everything.
  • 3 types of cars to bring in: "Hero cars" (McLaren p1 etc.), "region cars" (popular Australian, German cars etc.), and the rest.
  • 9 months from sourcing a car to players getting to drive it.
  • Turn 10 gets CAD data from manufacturers when possible, and then scales down those CAD models to a more game-suitable standard.
  • Other cars are laser scanned and extensively photographed.
  • Material samples are applied under varying light conditions to help replicate them in-game. "Imperfections" make them more realistic.
  • Turn 10 have broken a few owners' cars during dyno testing (including one of a high-up person at Microsoft) when sampling engine audio.
  • For cars that they can't get dyno data for they have a vast database of engine audio from past recordings to use as reference.
  • Forza Motorsport 7 will feature driveline flex, which should be audible in-game.
  • Tyres are the most important thing to understand from a physics standpoint.
  • For the first few Forza games Turn 10 looked up academical records before starting to develop their own data in Forza Motorsport 4.
  • Different/older cars have different tyre simulation models, tyre flex etc.
  • Porsche were hesitant to give Turn 10 access to the 911 GT2 RS pre-reveal, but the potential audience figures of E3 made it worthwhile.
  • Turn 10 had highly-detailed access to the GT2 RS during its development. Torque curves, part measurements, factory visits etc.
  • "We've had a ton of leaks of our game content, but none of our partners' car data". Car data is highly locked-down in terms of secrecy and data security but once a partner is on board they're more accommodating in sharing information.
  • Laguna Seca is Dan's personal first reference point for all physics updates as he's driven it in the Forzatech engine for 12 years.
  • Laser scanning equipment includes point data, image data and colour data.
  • Turn 10 have a custom piece of equipment to help test how track surfaces affect tyres.
  • Project Gotham Racing was going to have a global time of day system so that if you drove at 22.00 in real life it would be 22.00 in the game. Idea scrapped due to players mostly playing at evening/night.

===================================================================================
https://news.xbox.com/2017/08/08/favorite-car-stunning-detail-forza-motorsport-7-garage/

[...]the more cars you collect, the better your rewards are going to be. But if you want better rewards, you’ll want to build up your collection of cars.

Interviews with Dan Greenawalt and Bill Giese.

A few key points:

4:40 - Career mode. Bill talks about Forza Drivers' Cup, 6 major championships, trophies, series points scoring, race length tools and there will be a "surprise" when you complete the career mode.

6:40 - Searchable public custom lobbies? No. Dan starts talking about LFG systems.

7:27 - Gifting credits, cars etc.? Dan confirms the AH will be featured in Forza 7.

8:15 - Improved league system and division, eSports focus and community, marshals, spectator mode etc.

9:43 - Nothing to announce about off-road racing.

10:13 - FH3 widebody kits are back and additional kits for motorsport have been brought in. New motorsport-focused wheels were added.

Interview with Dan Greenawalt and Bill Giese.

Key talking points:

Here, on Day 1 of E3, we’re going to take you into a deep dive of Forza 7, to give you an in-depth look at what to expect when the game hits store shelves beginning on October 3.

https://www.forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/fm7_e3_demo

Today, the doors to E3 2017 are open and we’re giving you an inside look at the Forza Motorsport 7 demo that is running on the show floor on actual Xbox One X hardware and for the rest of the week. For those of who can’t be at the show in person, consider this your in-the-cockpit tour of the biggest racing game in Forza history.

  • PC version of livery editor supports mouse and keyboard.
This to me is really interesting. With the way people are have managed to create some really complex designs in the past games, I can't imagine how much easier they could be to fine tune with a mouse & keyboard.

Here a more in depth interview with Dan, at 6:53 he talks about force feedback and wheelsupport :)

  • Discusses broad spectrum of Forza players across both Horizon and Motorsport.
  • Game built from the ground up for PC and Xbox One X.
  • Minimum spec on PC will be lower than previous games.
  • "Physics is always first", influences assists, tyres, track evolution etc.
  • Friction Assist: Less punishing when you go off-track.
  • Force feedback has been re-done, more wheels supported.
  • A 5 year vision for Forza, eSports and streaming (Mixer) is part of that.
  • Widebody kits return.
  • Driving gear: Over 300 pieces.
  • New definition of "clean" and "dirty" laps, less strict in Single Player.
  • Can set race length in Campaign. XP and CR rewards scale accordingly.
  • Drivatars: You can make them "more professional", "less raw".
  • VR: Not talking about it right now.

Looks like I can't embed more than 5 videos into a post, so in the OP I'll instead link to specific posts from this thread where people can find the video(s).

https://ar12gaming.com/articles/forza-7-adjudication

When asked about how Turn 10 plans to tackle the issues that plague online play in Forza Motorsport 6, Giese said the new Adjudication System in Forza Motorsport 7 will penalize players who cut corners, crash out other players, or do something else that could potentially give you an advantage or wouldn’t be considered sportsmanship. These penalties will see the game “take you down,” Giese said, revealing that players who cheat or race unclean could face added time on to their final lap and race total, or have their result marked as ‘dirty’ in Rivals.

Interview with Ryan Cooper

At 4:15, Acey talks about drivers being out of the cars but Ryan doesn't say anything about pit crews; he only mentions "pre-race", "post-race" and online lobbies to "show off" the race gear. So I guess It could be something only made for the trailer.

Interview with Ryan Cooper

  • "We reimagined everything regarding the driving experience."
  • Cars feel violent at high speed.
  • Driver Gear: Sounds like full suits and not a "mix and match" of items.
  • Drivers will be seen in pre-race, post-race, multiplayer lobbies.
  • E3 attendees get an E3-exclusive driver suit in the full game.

Certain cars will be exclusively rewarded in Career.

I have collected nearly all cars in FM6 without completing more than two or three career races. I like how it is possible to build a complete car collection by using nothing but Free Play. On the other hand, career completion incentives aren't necessarily a bad thing as long as the events are fun.

Interesting that Top Gear returns. I wonder if maybe the original deal was quite a large one, and that they're just doing what they have to do.

I understand it right? I can use my T300 with FM7 on a XBox One?
