The atmosphere isn't stationary. It rotates with the Earth. If you catch some air currents you can travel, but they won't take you around the world. Well, not in 24 hours.

But you don't need A's in physics to know that ;)
 
Just to throw my hat in the ring, could you theoretically do that with a helicopter (assuming you had a 24 hour fuel tank)?
 
Only McDonald's would find that really creative, I would find that offensive if I were selecting new employees, and that is what makes it undeniably funny. :lol:

I only follow 2 forums on GTP anymore, and the only worthwhile threads have become entirely reposts from Reddit and bOINGbOING. Thankfully Imports is still sourced diversely.

Sure, it can be done with a helicopter or plane provided it's fast enough (about 1000mph if you're above the equator).

It would need to travel, it cant just "hover" even if it goes into space, its still in orbit and will roughly follow the earth from where it took off. Its not like it can magically stay still while the earth rotates under it. It would have to break the earths orbit in order to "hover"? even then?

That's what I meant.

It would have to travel at more than 1000mph (depending on your altitude and latitude) in the opposite direction of the Earth's spin, so that it would appear to hover in one place while the Earth spins bellow it. That's why a hot air balloon won't cut it.
 
You'd need a Concorde if you want to do it in luxury!
 
So if a fighter pilot gets scrambled and has to fly a mach 3 to get there in the opposite direction of the earths spin, does he never get there?
