Custom races haven’t been touched in any way as far as I can see…
Except for one minor thing: Slipstream Off

Which I just tried. Did a 15 lapper at Suzuka with my GT4 series and put a few cars up front that are known to hold up the field. And they did exactly that. It took me ~8 laps to get from 12th to 1st, and then I spend the last part of the race slowly pulling away from 2nd. (Rabbit car was in use) Finished several seconds ahead.

Then I set the race to 10 laps and removed slipstream.

To my surprise, the Mustang and Genesis Coupe that were holding up the field in the first race, slowly pulled away and the top 5 or 6 cars spread out a little so there was space between them. In this race I started 10th and barely managed to catch the Mustang at the end to finish side by side at the line. There might be something here with the no slipstream, but there wasn't a whole lot of passing going on so it might take some BOP experimenting to correct that.

I’ll have a look at Slip Stream, cheers for pointing that out.

I must admit, I haven’t tested every option, just the obvious wish list changes, news cars, tracks etc.

Custom racers are always bottom of the list of things to do….but we are on the list! Haha…I think..

I've been having fun with the power pack, HOWEVER, I think Sophy 2.1 custom mode drives much better and feels more realistic. The field spread isn't massive, and overall races just play more balanced. I also think the challenge is higher yet fair.

Some of us here have recently perceived small changes in 2.1 Sophy behavior. I don't think we are all in our heads. Something was done and races do feel better.

It's very annoying that we still can't do anything except a one-make for certain cars. It would be nice to at least allow "choose from garage" even if it's still limited to the same cars, so we could at least use liveries.
Quick example: Thought about making a go kart cup with current F1 grid. You find liveries for each team in showcase but there's no way to actually do this.
I was really hoping PD would address things like this before they work on a paid DLC.

In the GT4 race I did last night, I didn't really notice any difference.

But yes, I had much more fun doing those 2 quick races last night at Suzuka than I have so far in the Power Pack. Where Sophy 3.0 likes to dive bomb and move you out of the way far more than 2.1.

Hey guys, I have been following this thread for a while, and it has been a great resource for finding cool facts about the Custom Race feature.

However, I recently hit a bit of a wall. I found myself wanting to set up a quick Custom Race but spending more time deciding on the car and track combo than actually driving. I ran out of fresh ideas and kept falling back on the same familiar favorites. To solve this, I built a simple web tool to generate random event specifications for me. I thought it might be useful for others here who want a fresh challenge without the decision fatigue.

Here's the link to the page: https://gt7-random-event-gen.vercel.app

It essentially acts as a prompt for your next race. It generates a vehicle, a specific track layout with compatible weather and time of day. It has been refreshing so far, forcing me to drive cars I have neglected for a good while.

Hopefully, this helps some of you when you are looking for a quick race but do not know what to pick. Let me know if you get any interesting combinations.

This is awesome! Really nice design too.

Building a TA2 grid. So glad it’s ready to race. Set up a series to see how it goes.

I've gotta bring up the change in Physics and Reggie. There's got to be something there. The two videos in my post above. Number one, I noticed when I'm pushing hard for about two to three laps, my braking and grip are not optimal. I back off for about half a lap and then it's like the car comes good.
Maybe the tyre temps from the World Tour races are implemented, but we don't have the gauge.

Regarding regular AI programming, it's like the cars are at half GT SOPHY speeds. However, I'm not doing much damage to catch the leaders.
I look at my old races and I'm steadily climbing up the field to battle for P1 towards the end of the race. This hasn't been the case since last update and especially this update. I've been doing a lot of races with Reggie since Thursday and the programming(rubber banding, however anyone wants to call the program) is definitely making me push harder to try and get in the top half of the field.

It's nearly like Project Cars and ACC AI where not much forward progress is made when dialling up the AI.

Well, pre update, I noticed that tune made a HUGE difference to Sophy. The more a car was tuned to be thrashed, the more Sophy liked it. Reggie might be the same.

With the new tires, there's definitely a change, and we can see in the DLC that it's easy to spin Sophy out. I need to go check my pre update times to see the difference. I'll fire up my Suzuki Carry race and go to Ya Marina :D

For sure. I was having a bit of problems with the Camaros in my T/A grid. I went the opposite and softened the springs. That stocked SOPHY from spinning when accelerating out of corners and sweepers.
Again, races with that group of cars still yielded similar competitive races and a different feel to the tyre physics.

After plaing several hours in Power Pack, I think there is a chance that Sophy 3.0 will be available for the rest of the game later.

It literally has all the features we players wanted, like driving in the rain, grid starts, support for some missing tracks or rally support. Maybe it wasn’t ready for Spec 3. Power Pack has really specific scenarios. I really hope we will see new sophy stuff soon for all modes.

I really want to get into custom races, but every time I try, I don't get what I'm looking for.

So today I made a full grid of race tuned N-Ones on RH tires.
First test was with Reggie, the regular AI, on "highest" settings (boost weak & professional). Five laps at Spa. I took P1 at Blanchimont in the first lap and quit the race. I forgot to turn the power down on my car before the race (the 96% bug), but still, wouldn't have much of a difference. That's pointless, but Sophy should definitely do better here.
Well, nope, Sophy still hasn't learned to drive this car unfortunately. She's still living a bit in the past when it comes to updates.

So, did I spend hours and millions on making a useless custom grid?
Well, I'm not giving up after the first test and I really needed a dose of Nordschleife, so I set up a 2 lap race on N24 against Reggie with the same settings as before. This time I also didn't forget to turn my power down before the race.
The first lap wasn't that bad! Two cars put up a good fight and didn't let me pass easily, another one even managed to retake his position after I passed him!
On the other hand there were 2 cars with the "blinker and let him pass" bug. And overall I was still climbing ranks much too fast.
At the end of the first lap I was at P4. I passed Norris (I had a F1 grid set up) at the right hander after the straight. Then everything fell apart quickly. The most awkard and unrealistic thing happened: Verstappen, at P2, put the blinker and let me pass😟
That left only Oscar in front of me. I was hoping that at least he would put up a good fight for the remaining lap.
Nope. Could have passed him after the Schumacher S, but stayed behind. He didn't get the next turn well and I passed him on the straight, just to let him back in front again. But he still didn't want to fight, so I passed him again at Sabine Schmitz corner. I let him in front again, slowed down even more and let 2 more cars pass. At Schwedenkreuz I was back at P1. So I thought, ok, let's push a bit and see how much of a lead I can get. The way the AI drove until then I was positive that I could easily get a 15-20 seconds lead.
Nope. The moment I started to push, all the drivers behind me had a sudden enlightenment and realized that they're in a race an maybe should also push.
The biggest lead I had over Oscar for the remaining lap was 1.7 seconds! He was constantly at my tail, even trying to attack once. Strangely, at Döttinger Höhe, neither he nor anyone else tried to get into my slipstream, so I won rather comfortably. But look at this:

Pretty close, isn't it? I didn't even get the fastest lap!
So the AI can be fast! Not in a "fair way" probably, just with artificial boost, but I don't even care about that so much, as long as it leads to enjoyable result.
But the problem is that the AI simply refuses to drive quick when they're in front of you. They only do it once you passed them all.
It's so unsatisfying to know that they could give you a good race but for whatever reason they just don't.

Long post, sorry, can't sleep🤓

This is a great demo of the impact of whatever tricks we come up with in here to force a fair fight. I wonder, if you run this again with two adjustments, how you’d find it:

Pick a circuit where they’re not blinkering out of the way, ideally one the AI doesn’t TOTALLY stink at (Schumacher S is a letdown w Reggy, in particular) - Autopolis, Goodwood, Catalunya, RBR (short), Suzuka come to mind as generally good circuits, though there are loads of layouts that do well.

Add a pace car/rabbit - sacrifice your first grid slot to something that will dust you (though ideally not lap you), race for second place. This technique should combat that part where they stick to your butt once you pass.

I’m curious if either of two things happens:
1) They’re in ‘slow mode’ the whole time. Hopefully, without blinker passes, slow mode will be quite quick! Should you reach first, though, you’ll gap them in more realistic fashion than previously.
2) They’re in ‘fast mode,’ artificially chasing the rabbit, and thus a bigger challenge than before.

^if you have the patience to layer on one tip at a time, that’s cool for science, hahah.. realizing it will be hard to determine ‘slow’ vs. ‘fast’ modes if you jump to a different circuit AND add a rabbit.

I tried Reggie - It still sucks. Completely useless. No thanks.

I'll stick to Sophy only.
