A group of friends and I recently started running 450PP races where each player has to choose a specific car and make it their own, and it's genuinely some of the most fun we've ever had on the game. The fact that these people are so short-sighted that they intentionally limit themselves from experiencing that type of joy is just... tragic, to me.
Casual tomfoolery is becoming a lost art in racing games.
Over Covid lockdown me and my housemate started firing up Forza Motorsport 4 and made a game of using Google’s random number generator to pick a PI rating, which we then had to buy a car and then got 15-20 minutes each to build/tune/setup a car within 5-10 points of the said number, and then do a 30-40 minute “endurance race” on split screen.
He usually went with high power RWD cars, I usually tried to go with lightweight twitchy FWD cars and go crazy on the toe/camber for a cornering advantage - somehow we always ended up with a crazy goofy close race.
We were super excited for GT7 to come out and take this game we made to GT’s PP system and larger race and tuning depth, and more modern sets of content, but unfortunately split screen was broken at launch and wasn’t fixed till long after we all moved out.
Even without splitscreen this exact game can be played in the existing lobby tools, and I wish host migration was better so that people would be more inclined to use the feature rather than just limiting themselves to sport mode for online racing. It’s such a fun way to make use of the road cars, especially the older/slower ones.
I haven’t had access to GT7 for a few years now, but I highly recommend trying something like this out if you have a friend group that plays or are willing to host a lobby to do so. I’ve never not had fun when I did way back.
