I was a teenager when it first came out, and I really wanted one.
I think most people just found it cheap, fun and practical.
Here is a small list of things that contributed to its success in my opinion:
- Its quirkiness, both exterior and interior design were very unique at the time. The radio antenna being located in the mirror for example (as previously mentioned by @Famine).
- Its modularity, I remember it as a small car which felt big inside, full of small compartments, with a wide and unobstructed dashboard plus the sliding rear seat (which was a first I seem to recall) which you could turn into something of a bed. I specifically remember finding the sliding rear seat idea brilliant. Feels so obvious now.
- Its minimalist and cost effective approach, it was a very accessible and no fuss car. Bare minimum equipment, one engine and four paint colours for the very first iteration.
- And most importantly I'd say, the marketing campaign was very very creative, 'bubbly', efficient and omnipresent, be it TV/radio/press advertisements, billboards, art installation etc.

Edit: Here is the original TV spot, I think it summarizes the Twingo nicely.
I've never seen that about the seats lol, that's great.
