Thought the SOP was disappointing overall. I was almost confident at least one of the games I really care about would show up. (GT / Intergalactic / Remake part3)

Oh well.

Back on topic: Curious if there will be any more communication regarding the upcoming GT7 update, because yesterday was the time to do it and silhouettes don't really make sense now.

This is, I admit, fully grasping at straws and I don't expect it at all.

But this would be the perfect update for Kaz to do what he did with Goodwood in GT Sport and post a snippet of track map as the "silhouette".

I think silence during State of Play surely proves it's completely unreasonable to expect anything else for the next update. If there is a track they would show it in the first trailer, there's zero reason to keep it hidden, especially since SoP passed and there were no grand announcement. I would say updated Sarthe is the only somewhat reasonable to expect track-related thing. But I seriously doubt there's anything else HUGE in this update besides 5 cars. The trailer was shown in advance during GTW simply because that is exactly the audience for those machines.

But of course, it's PD, so just because something seems very logical, obvious and predictable doesn't mean it's correct.

Maybe it is just not as big as „Spec” update

There was plenty of big updates without state of play announcment. But surely ther will be something more than just cars, even if this will be just new events or swaps.

Of course, I just mean it most likely won't have anything else besides the regular stuff we get
It might have some smaller LeMans/WEC related stuff, just nothing really big like a track or some brand new game mode.

I don't know if it'd be fitting but I hope they potentially add the Bugatti Circuit section of Le Mans.
I know the Bugatti Circuit gets a lot of stick for not being particularly suited to high-end race cars (Gr.3 maximum maybe), but it would actually be a really good fit for Gran Turismo in particular compared to other racing games, due to the large amount of road cars and slower speed stuff.

Still a decent length at 2.60 miles (a smidge longer than Road Atlanta, which is 2.54 miles).

However what kinda inclines me to think that they won't do this is that they had the opportunity to add many layouts to Yas Marina, but we only ended up getting the full GP course. Unless more layouts get added down the road, which would be nice. The rallycross one in particular would be neat so Catalunya isn't the only one of its kind.

Well there could be more sophy support, new missions, event types or even one track. PD used to add track pre rekease trailer without teasing.

And yet, you'll find so many people in its playerbase that wish for it to be homogenised into the same bland soup that encompasses all other sim racers... :/
People wanting race cars doesn't mean they don't also want road cars, or want road cars to be removed from the game entirely to be more like other titles. They just have their own preferences for additional content.
Ideally, we have a mix of both in a somewhat balanced measure. Which is why I personally think having an update of all race cars like we're getting in June isn't ideal, in the same way an update of all road cars isn't (which is a far more regular occurence).

I think that 2 road cars & 1 race/rally car is the right balance point for normal 3-car updates. Though I'd be interested in hearing what others have as their ideal road/race car ratio.

But then why show and state preview? No mentions of cars name etc

Because it was a preview for GTWS audience. Maybe this times it is the update trailer and they just won't release a regular one at all. I'm ready to eat my words, but as of now I will not be surprised at all if in a week we get a trailer with the same cars or no trailer at all. Hiding content in the preview trailer, especially if it's something fitting for GTWS audience, seems like a weirder choice than making an extra trailer.
Unless it's something completely unrelated to e-sports, like idk, massive photomode update or freeroam map, then maybe, but of course neither of those are happening and, again, way more unrealistic than them making an extra trailer.

I kind of disagree.

I think it's unreasonable to expect anything really big, yes. Like, there's no second DLC pack coming (or a Spec IV - though why people were expecting Spec IV so quickly I have no idea) or anything like that, that's the kind of thing that's big enough that they would have announced at a State of Play.

But I think one track related thing - whether it's a Le Mans refresh or one brand new track - is not impossible still. Just a single track is not big enough to be something you announce at a State of Play where 95% of the people watching would shrug at it and go "why is this in this show".

Do I think there's anything else coming? I'm leaning no at this point. I just don't think a new track not being at the SoP means there definitely isn't one.

On the topic of day/night cycles, what's up with Circuit Gilles Villeneuve being shown at night in the Spec III intro movie?

The time-of-day settings for the track allow you to drive in the evening, but nothing like this.

I genuinely just think the build they have in-house will (obviously) let them change time and weather to anything at any track. I'd imagine sometimes things just slip through the cracks.

I would not be surprised if they had at least the full time cycle (less confident on weather) built almost across the board, but the PS4 can't handle it in a lot of places so they only deploy the public builds where the PS4 can run it.

It won't be that, PD are just incredibly selective about where they allow players to use 24-hour time cycles for whatever reason. The Nurburgring and Spa 24h layouts allow it but the other layouts for both tracks don't, because... they don't host 24-hour races in real life??? Meanwhile, Colorado Springs of all tracks allows it.

My bet is that they don't have the proper star constellations captured for that location. They made a big deal of that in GT6 and I think (?) GT Sport when they did night tracks.

PD being so anal about that makes me think they don't want to publicly make night time available until they have that. Or just the way the night sky looks in that location (or maybe even just that they didn't capture images at night for lighting reference, and they don't want to estimate it, they want to use their own references for maximum accuracy).

Being french makes reading english sometimes hilarious.

Same reason why no rain on all tracks. Forza Motorsport has that (since 2016 I believe?), but Forza, and Microsoft Xbox's products in general, has always been made following an industrial, MVP (minimum product viable) logic. Turn 10 was never concerned with the finer details.

PD is probably the studio with the highest standards within Sony. God of War (2018), for example, is one of the best games ever made, and deservedly won the GOTY over RDR2 (which, although incredible, was a victim of its own excess), but its corridor-style semi-open world made Santa Monica prioritize Kratos' combat and immediate environment. Whenever you move away from where you're supposed to be, the game loses much of its technical fidelity. Gran Turismo also makes sacrifices, of course, but they're less noticeable. The "lowres" areas aren't as easily accessible in GT.

With regards to the update itself... we're getting 4 hypercars already. Anyone expecting more was entitled to their line of thought, but had unrealistic expectations. I've been long enough in this video game thing to learn to always expect the least possible.

BTW...

Speaking of State of Play, which I don't watch on principle, I also think current video games, as well as pop culture on a broader scale, are slop based on obsolete franchises repurposed for the internet/Xwitter crowd as well as GenZ. IPs are treated as industrial, not artistic assets; the goal of an industrial asset is to maximize profit, not have aesthetic impact. In the age of aggregators, as long as it pleases internet/Xwitter, it doesn't matter whether you tweak an IP so much, only the name remains.

What keeps Gran Turismo from becoming that is Kaz's vision and position as one of Sony's VPs, but the "industrial" part of the product still showed through practices such as MTX (which IMO were Sony's idea and luckily didn't take off).

Whilst I agree with you to a degree, I still think in terms of Insomniac, Santa Monica (and an absent Naughty Dog) are trying to keep that spirit alive. Wolverine and GoW: Laufey I thought looked really good.

its been like that since it came to GT Sport btw
But I thought PD were concerned with the finer details? Surely they should notice such a glaring issue with one of the most iconic tracks in the game, unlike the ghastly Turn 10 who would never do such a thing?

Surely they'd also notice the horrific in-race LoD of the Murcielago if they were so detail-oriented?

Yes, but the rendering of the starry sky is perfect....
