A shame to see things move to be so anti-consumer, whilst having no power to stop it.
This is horrible for everyone except them. Even if you've never bought a physical game in the past 15 years, this gives them total control of the PS games market.
No physical media means no used games to drive down prices. Things will be £50-70 for eternity and you'll have to suck it up.

Disconcerting to see the industry collapse around you and push you out of it.

Sounds like the logical next step...

Even though, for us, this is the agonizing end of a golden age of video games, it will be the norm for the generation being born now. They’ll listen to us talk about that era with blank expressions and take us for weird old relics. Meanwhile, the old relics at the head of the video game industry raking in their money will be grinning from ear to ear.

When I was young, I used to tease my grandmother a bit because the only game she had to offer me was Petits Chevaux. She had probably never played anything else in her life, apart from cards, dices, or jump rope.
And... I get it now. I have my own little games that will accompany me until the end. And they're not that dire ! My money could very well be invested in more useful things if they are unable to pay respect, not a single regret.

Worse... Sony could make the games all subscribtion based. Pay 49.99€/$ per year & title to play/have acces to a game or pay something like 79.99€/$ per month to have access to all titles. No more "unlimited" access and still regular profits with "live service" titles for sony ._.

This won't happen, you don't need to worry about this.

Partly because third parties would never agree to it, but more importantly Microsoft have spent the last half-decade proving subscription-first strategies don't work in gaming.

As much as this does indeed suck, hasn't this been the case in the PC gaming space for well over a decade? Or do PC games still have discs in rare cases?

PC is predominantly digital but you still have other marketplaces, ways to generate money within marketplaces (i.e. selling stuff in Steam) as well as multiple platforms of key-sellers to drive consumer-friendly pricing because the marketplaces have to (at least, at times) be able to compete with the fact games are available for cheaper.

PS is just going to be a platform monopoly entirely driven by Sony, and that's really really bad for everyone who wants to buy PS games.

Yes from decade on pc, consoles were last bastion (also usually steam games are cheaper than on psstore for some reason)

I'm thinking this may activate some EU regulations, like the Digital Markets Act, requiring Sony to allow alternative stores. It's what forced Apple to allow other stores on iOS.

The 30th anniversary is 2027 and it will be the last game from the series you'll be able to get physically unless they go big on steel box editions.
 
I honestly think PlayStation might have dug its own grave today.

The vibe to me is very 2013 Xbox One announcement, in that I don't think they could get the stink of today off even if they U-turn.

And that's before they even take the huge PR hit of having to announce a PS6 price of, what, $1200? And that's if they're lucky with memory prices?

The amount of people going "guess I'm PC+Nintendo from now on" is immense.

I (has my business mind) get why they are doing this. People are buying less and less physical copies so much that video games shop are going out of business (cough GameStop cough). The last physical game I bought was Astro Bot back in December 2024. Every game since then was digital and/or by ps plus. They could make this work by having ps exclusive day one on ps plus like Xbox is doing with some of their games. People who want to play games available on other consoles would have to buy them from the ps store. By having games mostly available on the digital store it should theoretically give Sony more money…

Now my personal opinion:
We like physical copy. It is somewhat nostalgic to put a disc of a brand new game into your console. But if the next console is digital only those probably never gonna be made again. The closest thing we could get is limited edition “fake” physical copy (download code in a disc box) for collectors and enthusiasts. But it wouldn’t be the same 😕.
Today is a sad day for the video games community.
You will be missed dear disc 🫡.
 
I still have my physical copy of GT Sport, even though I don't really jump on it much. All there is really to do is the GT League.
 
Tbh I had long decided that the Ps5 was going to be my last full time console. What that means is I won't be playing any games from series I'm not invested in. This decision tells me I was right to do that.

I understand the feeling about the physical disc and the issues with this business model.

But I have digital consoles since my first PS5 (and my Pro is digital too). I used to buy digital copies on my PS4 too.

I have PS+ Extra which gives me access to plenty games and with my son we benefit a lot from it.

I rarely replay old games. Or I replay the remastered version.

Having to put a disc into the console is annoying to me, plus it is noisy and delays the start of the game. Plus it may deteriorate.

I don't care for boxes that I view as more clutter and things I need to store somewhere. With my PC games and console games, I might have 4 boxes in total, including Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, that I deeply regret buying the disc version of, installing is a chore.

At the moment I feel like the balance is right. And if they go too heavy on the subscription side/rent to play, I'll just use other ways to play video games and they'll lose my subscription.

I 99,99% share your view and, in fact, is how I also operate since I went through the life of my PS4, then PS5 fat digital and now Ps5pro, for the same reasons as yours, ... but I also share the fear of the community.

Less options is always bad for customers. It remains to be detailed, but if Sony keeps being the only digital store, then competition won't be there to keep prices fair and they, Sony, could also easily block the console account-sharing scheme, leaving those now enjoying digital games at 50% of the price having to pay full price.

Edit: I have now seen somewhere else that Sony statement read something like this: " ... new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only", (amongst other things to prevent anti-monopoly lawsuits from the likes of EU or other states). Conditions/margins for said retailers to operate remain to be seen, though.

I remember my PS3's disc drive dying and having to buy a few of my games a second time, but this time digitally. I didn't get my whole library, just the 3 or 4 games I played often enough to be worth it. So now I have many games on discs that I can't play because hardware can fail.
That was a contributing factor for why I went digital-only.

Apparently "Beyond The Apex" was updated? Though I don't know if they mean it was updated at the start of GT7 and this is one of there "Hey this feature exists" posts, or if it was updated more recently.

Haven't logged in for a while, but shouldnt the reward cars, the stealth liveries, be handed out? Or did I miss anything?

Technically, you can turn the Mustang American Racer into a NASCAR. But it's more of an ARCA setup.

Yes - its just that it would need to be so that you can choose "tuning not allowed" or bop and you have same stock nascar for everyone. Same with the porsches - you can quite easily turn any of them to Porsche Cup spec, but we would need an actual cup car to have restricted races..

Yes.. shuffle was some of the best fun i've had online. And if you look at the more (e)sporty side - imagine multiclass shuffle. Gr4+gr3+gr1 shuffled..
