It's like wanting to have a university-level knowledge on a subject without going to the lectures.
Only in this case it's not university level. It's barely high school. I've got all the cars, have tested all the really expensive ones, and I can't say any of them are in any way remarkable. For every one of them there's a car in the same class that performs the same, or often better, for a fraction of the price. On top of that many of them need so much tuning that it takes an experienced player to be able to sort them out to be actually enjoyable to drive, and those wanting them right now aren't experienced enough because otherwise they'd have them already.

TL;DR: they're mostly pretty terrible and not even worth buying but people want them "just because".

Personally I feel like a better solution for the car unobtainium issue would be to expand the roster available in Arcade Mode significantly, to include every car in the game, which is something that even GT4 didn't do entirely but is probably the closest that the franchise has done.
Oh and uh, to make Arcade Mode acccessible not just when disconnected from the servers...

On a tangent point, the Le Mans Prototypes back on GT4 cost 4.5 million credits, and none of them were available in Arcade Mode until you bought them in Career Mode.
This. Been wanting something like this in GT7 since the beginning. Also an option for custom grids in Custom Races to support Arcade rental cars, should this be implemented.

In vanilla GT4, you started with 240 rental cars out of 719 in the US version (744 in the Spec II mod).

To make it like GT4, the amount of rental cars available should be based on your Car Index progress, where if you've collected all the cars, then theoretically, everything is available for you to use freely.

I agree with everything you've said.

However, in other games we see players grinding AND getting good in equal measures to obtain purely cosmetic trinkets so it's clear that usefulness isn't on the agenda. Some people just have certain objectives, I guess. My point was more that nobody is entitled to achieve them just because. You have to pick a path.

It’s crazy we can choose all the circuits and not try all the cars.
Well, you still have to unlock the circuits by progressing through the Menu Book career mode. There's only a handful of circuits unlocked at the start.
Unlocking them is probably something we've all done so long ago that it's easy to forget that it was a thing though.

Oh, I know we have to unlock the circuits, it’s still crazy we are still limited to the same random cars offline.

Well, we do live in an age of instant gratification.

Someone mentioned Forza. In Forza there's a paradox. Most cars are ridiculously easy to get. For everything else, if you miss the opportunity window, it's either 20 million (and you still have to defeat the sniper bots on PC) at the auction or wait for when Playground in all their glory decides to re-release the car. For late adopters this is not really fair, but it's how modern business works, I guess. GT7 has the FOMO issue as well but rotation is fixed at least.

Should have gone full nostalgic and did like the first Gran Turismo with Arcade Mode. Have car selection by manufacturer, not how it is with one random road car and only two race cars. It’s crazy we can choose all the circuits and not try all the cars.
If Polyphony were to bring back that feature where we could have all cars available as rental cars similar to GT4, I think in order to unlock new cars, you must fill up your Car Index entries.

This means players start off with the:
Suzuki Swift Sport '07
Mazda Roadster S (ND) '15
Mini Cooper S '05
Toyota GR86 RZ '21
Renault Sport Megane R.S. Trophy '11
KTM X-Bow R '12
Alpine A110 Premiere Edition '17
Ford Focus ST '15
Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD) '02
Ford Mustang GT Premium Fastback '15
Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport '16
Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept
Subaru WRX Gr. B Rally Car

Theoretically, we start off with the same rental cars as in offline mode (13 cars), and go on to unlock all the rest by acquiring them at least once. There are 570 cars now, and potentially 600 cars by early next year, so that's a lot of cars to complete the Car Index with to have all of them available as rentals.

And lastly, an option to choose rival cars through rental cars in Custom Races would also be nice, since we already have "Change Car (Garage)".

In my experience you can get all cars in about 400 hours of racing, without grinding.
Confused Regular Season GIF by Major League Soccer

best case scenario 400 hours of Sardegna WTC800 will bring 1,663M/h x 400h = 663M = enough to buy all cars but with grinding

I fail to see how you can get more than 500M Cr in 400 hours without grinding (you will win some cars along the way but it won't get you that far)
This is patently untrue and I wish people would stop rolling the line out.

Grinding is only necessary if you want all the cars as fast as possible. "Organically" playing the game will get you the credits you need but it takes longer.
you are right, you can also play for years everyday and some day you'll get all cars
Well, we do live in an age of instant gratification.
lol I am old enough to not be affected by this phenomenon, and I still think that there should be a middle ground between getting everything in 5 minutes and having to play a game everyday (or at least many times a week, or a few times but long hours) for years to complete it

While better than the current situation, from what I understand it still means you have to buy a 20m credit car in order to drive it at all, not really resolving the original point.

If all cars in the game can't/shouldn't be available in Arcade Mode right at the start with no Career Mode progression, then perhaps an alternative way of unlocking them could be through earning Licenses. This was something I think they did in GT2, but that's the one main game in the franchise I don't own so I could easily be wrong.

So how that would work...
Let's say GT7 has 600 cars total for easier maths.
You start out with "only" 200 cars to choose from in the initial Arcade Mode roster, with no Career Mode progression yet.
  • National B License adds an extra 100 cars. 300 total.
  • National A License adds 90 cars. 390 total.
  • International B License adds 80 cars. 470 total.
  • International A License adds 70 cars. 540 total.
  • Super License adds 60 cars. 600 total. All cars are now unlocked for Arcade Mode (None added to your Career Mode garage from this).
The cars themselves may get more prestigious as the license rank gets higher. Or maybe not, and it's a mix of cars from all different levels in each rank, such as putting 1 of the 5 Hypercars in each license rather than having them all in Super License. Either method could work.

These are all unlocked just by getting the license (bronze), not requiring all gold times, as it's designed to be more of an accessible goal for players.

Regardless of method, I agree that it would be great if we didn't have to buy a car in order to select it as an opponent in Custom Race mode.
Being able to give the opponent cars custom liveries through this method might be a bit much, but that certainly would've saved me a lot of money on Dallara SF23's lol.

I haven't modeled it, but I have played GT7 on three separate accounts so far and noticed that after about 350 hours of racing I had all the cars I wanted, about 80% of total. Including all legend cars, excluding what I consider bs cars such as VGTs and safety cars.
If I try to briefly outline how that works:
  • you can earn about 100 cars by completing the menus etc
  • you can earn a nice amount of money by completing the CE
  • I can usually earn easy silver in the weekly time trials. That's a million each week for 10-15 minutes of racing
  • I do the weekly challenges to avoid grinding the big four races. That's about a million on average for an hour racing
  • I kind of like the Spa 1 hour race and the Le Mans 30 minutes, so I race these regularly just for fun with a good payout

In that way you earn an easy couple of million per week in about 2 hours of racing. Somehow that seems to add up to most of the cars in 350 hours.

Get snarky about it all you want, I quoted you as saying it was necessary to grind, unavoidable.
and even with those few low hanging fruits, you need to do an absurd amount of hours grinding if you want to buy all cars
Grinding in GT7 is, and always has been, a choice. Not an obligation.

I've always found I will almost always grind for an expensive car (still not 20 mil, admittedly) if I want it within the next hour or two of gameplay. However though, I've never felt obliged to do like you said, more just a lack of patience that we shouldn't be expected to have. There is definitely a middle ground here, as mentioned earlier.
Most of the time, the options for me for a quick sum of credits in about 40 minutes lie in either an un-golded TT or grinding. Otherwise, you just buy the cars as you go about your business, but in the end something does need a fix in the system, and decreasing the prices of 20 million cars seems like a good way to go

I've had all the cars for what feels like forever, and I'm almost always at the credit cap. I never really grinded excessively either.

There's a fine line between "grinding" and simply "playing the game," and I feel like I've always been doing the latter.

These days, GT7 gives you plenty of ways to earn credits: Daily Races, Weekly Challenges, Circuit Experiences (which people seem to overlook for some reason), Online Time Trials, etc.

Just play the game and enjoy it. The credits will come naturally over time.

The thing with Circuit Experiences is that they're not something you can gold quickly, so it's not efficient for earning money that way. It took me over an hour to gold Spa for instance. and I still haven't golded Laguna Seca.

But that’s literally playing the game?

Many of the circuit experiences took me even longer than that - I just never wondered if I was spending my time efficiently. I just enjoyed my time.

Just to give some perspective on grinding in GT7, I've also been playing a lot of GT5 lately, and the grind in that game is ridiculous, totally a night and day difference to GT7. There's really only one efficient way to grind, and that's running the American Championship Indy Speedway race, which pays just shy of 100k for 3.5-4 minutes of racing (5 laps, full throttle, at the Indy oval). Talk about tedious and boring.

My only other options require much larger time investments for much less pay (i.e. doing the full Dream Cars Championship or Endurance races). I mean, hell, the 24hr race at Sarthe pays just shy of 800k. The 24hr at Nurbirgring at least gives you a seven figure prize (over 1.8mil), but it also requires you to race against prototypes, so it's not a casual undertaking.

Honestly, the grind in GT5 makes me appreciate the grind and gameplay loop of GT7 so much more.

80% is pretty easy to gold, also for an average driver.
I suggest to not try for hours, just do the stuff that you can do. It is good practice too, it improves your driving.
Btw, the CE has become harder after the last dynamics adjustment.

Time efficiency in my case matters as I was trying to collect all of the cars, which a lot of them are acquired in 2 dealerships that only appear for a limited time before having to wait days to months in real life before they appear again. In that environment, it feels like I have to value time in earning money over anything else.

You don't technically have to acquire the cars, but with the existence of the car index. I'm pretty sure GT7 had car collection as a focus. Though in my case I needed to collect them as I may intend to record any of them for a video later on.

With that said, I wouldn't say I found CE enjoyable. It's like with the license tests, they're there to improve your driving. But I always found them to be a bunch of tedium if anything. I rather practice on my own just hot lapping in my own cars around circuits.

It is good practice too, it improves your driving.
Not really how I like to practice.

This has been my GT7 experience so far, and I feel it has maxed out for me.
I'm not a devoted player, just a regular one, and increasingly I've been ignoring my PS5 for days/weeks in favor of my other platforms.

I have no intention of ever completing menus that require purchasing 20 M cars. For what? An engine roulette spin and a cute montage about car history?

From the latest update I only purchased the pace car, and no, 3 M apiece is not palatable to me or my time.

Am I leaving meat on the bone? (See my % of circuit experiences completion) Maybe, but that's how it turned out for me with the game's structure.

Can you spot a problem here? The license center doesn't connect to any other thing in the game. IMO it would flow naturally into the circuit experiences. Café are just missions, so why have a separate Missions section? Collector level should be uncapped, but the limit is arbitrary and maxes out with only near half of the roster (!). And the music rally? Please.

And still, I like the core driving experience very much.

I mean as I said - I have all the cars and I’ve had them forever.
I think it’s a bit of a state of mind thing.
I never grinded nor did I ever feel like the game “forced” me to do something I didn’t want to.
I played the game very organically and got the cars and the recruited credits along the way.

I think you might have a point on it being a "state of mind", mainly because it depends on what people consider a grind. If I have to spend hours repeating a task multiple times to earn money for a car, I would call that a grind. And in this case, I honestly thought trying to gold circuit experiences to be a grind like how golding license tests in each GT game to be so (well, the older ones). It's why I seldom tried golding license tests in the classic GT games.

Though I probably should also point out that I seldom did any online racing as that requires a PS Plus subscription, I don't really want to pay that even if it means it would help in earning money better. (Plus with Sony's more recent changes to the service among other things) So, doing the WTC races like the LeMans 30 min race were my best options. I have basically every car in the game now except for probably the Porsche 911 Pace Car, I'm not in a hurry to get that.

For the record, online racing pays absolute nothing in comparison with offline racing.

I agree! I've actually been playing GT6 lately, and the options for grinding are either a very similar Like the Wind event at Indy, or the Red Bull X2014 Standard Championship. The later is extremely hard but also the most rewarding; if you repeat the first race and can win it consistently, you're looking at 1,584,000 cr. an hour and an adrenaline overload. :scared:
I think GT7 has a lot more enjoyable credit-making challenges then in the older games, thanks to online. But you still can't quite reach those 20 mil cars...

And going back to my topic from earlier, Polyphony lets you rent cars for Sport mode races and online time trials, but why not the single player "free play" modes?

This means that having all cars available as rentals in Quick Race, Time Trial, Drift Trial, Custom Race and Split-Screen Race wouldn't be too far-fetched.

Exactly, just one of many weird things they do. I can understand not implementing the option in Custom Race though. True, there could be a shuffle option when not using cars from the player’s garage, but if all cars have the potential to be used in Random car settings for Custom Race, all cars should be available to select for AI.
