the G5 racers and the controller (pads) racers... apparently it's a G5 racer who will win this :yuck: I feel disadvantaged.....

You mean G25? Anyway there is some fast sixaxis/ds3 players out there also.

I so want to race in this event...:) but of a friend of mine has my PS3 (i promised) for a whole month.... talk about bad timing...:'(

what a struggle this is..... 1'24.136! that's all I can do using my controller, graping 14th in my region :grumpy: seems like there's two types of racing going here, the G5 racers and the controller (pads) racers... apparently it's a G5 racer who will win this :yuck: I feel disadvantaged.....

For the German Top 100 you need a 1.23,884 :sly:
I think theres nobody who has a real chance without a wheel.

The wheel users have an advantage as the have better control over the car and better throttle control against people using the sixaxis

I'm not eligible to play in the tournament, since I'm from the US, but i would think a wheel would be a huge advantage over a control. No doubt in my mind. You can be much smoother.

Think of it like this....
Thanks for that, I'd always assumed that N1s were the stock tyre, S tyres were like cheapy track day tyres and the R tyres were the top notch jobs.

I was struggling to keep up with Sphinx at all, until I realised that I was using wayyyy too much lock (my wheel only goes 180* so it's a lot harder to use finesse), after a bit of practice I got down to 26th (I think), right alongside homeforsummer (fantastic job with a pad btw, you really should think about getting a wheel).

exactemundo... G25.... was thinking of my laptop mouse, the logitech G5 :dopey: Never used anything else but controller, thought I was good, but I can't find any place to improve at my current skill level.... And the car is mad hard to drive.... Like there's grease on the tires and the engine is soo slow, Argh! But I guess that's where the competition comes into place.... For the G25 racers that is :sly:

Cheers, trust me I certainly am thinking of getting a wheel. I think I might continue using the pad for the next couple of weeks, and if I'm finding it harder and harder to get anywhere near the top 20 then I'll buy a wheel and have another crack!

@ zocker_16: 1:23.884 just to get into the top 100? That's crazy! The German racers on GT5P certainly seem to be some of the quickest both online and in time trials. Always a pleasure to compete against! But looking at that time I reckon that even on the off-chance I manage to get through the two virtual rounds the competition in the actual cars might be pretty tough!

Hmm, at the minute I'm just using the GT3 wheel, the first or second force feedback wheel, I think. And I'd say if you got something like that for second hand I imagine it would be about 60p, lol. The wheel itself isn't that great but it's so much easier with pedals to control the throttle.

I've rarely seen german players online, usually the servers I'm on are UK/French/Spanish. Those lap times are insane.

I'm pretty much hitting a brick wall with the lap time I am at now ... I'm doing pretty good up to the turns before and after the tunnel then its a lottery if I can keep valuable speed, and when I do! ... I overcook the last turn

Its growing on me in a sadistic way though :P 👍

I found the last turn to be the hardest by far to master. There are just so many ways to screw it up!

This competition is a joke and I am angry !

DO YOU USE A PAD ? GIVE UP !

Why ?

Because it seems the competition is made by PD just for one single purpose:
Selling the new DFP wheel.

Never ever will any player be in the top 20 in the end IF HE USES A PAD !

Dont believe me ?
Watch the top-ten replays...
See how they shift gears...
Compare them to your shifting using a pad...

To get the revs up inbetween gearchanges (By using a wheel including a clutch ) makes the difference.

Pad: braaaaaaaaaaaaa ----pause------ broooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Wheel: braaaaaaaaaaaaEeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhh

Watch the topspeeds before each corner, that says all..

I know that sensitive steering / accelerating / braking is more difficult with the pad. But this does not prevent from beeing competitive if a player is used to the pad (like myself).

But to have a disadvantage by using the standard controller (sold with the PS3) is inexcuseable.

PD, Sony, Nissan: What have you been thinking when setting up this competition ?
Im gonna delete my academy registration !

I can not participate (I'm from Europe but my country has been excluded - not a first time ...) but i did some training in Arcade race - set 20laps and did 1'22.812 on 19th lap - do you think that is relevant to time trial settings ?

What type of "training";
(a) Arcade race -> time trial or
(b) Arcade race -> race?

The tyres for (a) are locked to S3.

Yep definitely not for the pad ... fastest I could muster after my first session with the pad was 1'23.1 and it was torture so I moved onto the dfp on my next session and got a bit faster straight away.
I am one of the racers who would never normally entertain N1 tyres in any combo! but with the wheel its quite enjoyable against the pads twitchy twitchy crap for this specific event.

I still use a DS2 when racing GT4 but alas GT5P has made it pretty much obvious that the pad is gonna finish 2nd place to a wheel in most events from now on

Is the new DFP wheel even available in Europe yet? I don't think it is in the UK.

If you are pretty used to the pad then you can drive really fast, too.

Yes, I guess that will make the difference at the end of the day.

But. I currently practise with the JP version of the game (I get the EU version
today), using Arcade Race -> Race (N1 tyres, no tuning), and I already got a
1'23:8xx with ease by using a pad and ALL settings off.

Hey nice work with the leaderboard Chronos 👍 The eiger image attachment sets it off very well

Sweet laps from the top 3 drivers 👍

Calundanni, what is the top 10 or 5 in your region?

Cheers Mr P, I cut it out of a white BG jpg then made an alpha png with GIMP.

Hey PrudentBear are you still using the paddle shifters? I'm sure you said you was before. That's what I'm using, and just that pad users are thinking its H shifter advantage playing a big part. Maybe the paddles still work better when upshifting compared to the sixaxis, although I think its more of better control available on throttle and brake and mainly keeping tight for the whole lap with the sticks on N1 tyres is very hard without doing hundreds of laps and training yourself. Tracks like Suzuka and Fuji would see a big benefit with H-Shifter imo.

S2 or above would probably get some pad users in the top 20 maybe, but then I would of thought the next stage you will have to use a wheel anyway, and they won't give you 2-7 days to get used to it, plus the super fast guys/gals outhere will more than likely beat most other wheel users who made the top 20 on any tyre.

What? GT5P's physics even calculate light's effect on the vehicle?! Heh. It's probably just that different types of people prefer different colors, like perhaps people who drive red cars tend to be more wreckless or something.

So your using a pad chronos? Thats a real impressive time you have. In time trial I'm normaly quite similar to your times ive noticed, but I just spent about 2 hours and cut 5 hundredths of my time to get a 1.22.8xx arggh. Way behind you on this one.

No, I'm sorry but you have misunderstood, I was just mentioning about using paddle shifters on a wheel compared to using a sixaxis. I've just got a wheel and have managed some fairly good times for other cars TimeTrials on S2 tyres up to the end of May with the pad(R2 as throttle), but I think N1 tyres is too much for the sticks unless you really get into it.

hmm I can't press the register button on the gt academy site, I check the box at the last line and when I try to press the register button (on the first page where everything is explained how it works etc.) Nothing happens.

Happened for me as well with some browsers, try another one.

Hmm could it be that if you are from Switzerland you can't register for GT - Academy ?

Indeed, Switzerland isn't among the participating countries. :(

(maybe it checks the ip from where you want to register and if it's no a country which is listed on the gt-academy page, then you are not allowed to register)

No, what matters is the country of the PSN account.

DO YOU USE A PAD ? GIVE UP !

*Snip*

PD, Sony, Nissan: What have you been thinking when setting up this competition ?
Im gonna delete my academy registration !

Give up? Cos that attitude would get you really far in actual racing. Sure using the pad definitely isn't the quickest way around the course and it's bloody difficult to get good times, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. It's certainly worth a try at any rate. I'm going to give myself till mid way through the competition with the pad, and if I'm not breaking the top 20 then I'll buy a wheel.

I'm sure your're frustrated but the pad being slower is no big surprise. It's an accurate simulation so the fact that an actual wheel and pedals is the quicker control method shouldn't be that big a shock.

Yep definitely not for the pad ... fastest I could muster after my first session with the pad was 1'23.1

When I first started I was struggling to break around 1:23.7 ish. Now I'm down to a 1:22.3. It just takes practice, like anything.

Hey PrudentBear are you still using the paddle shifters? I'm sure you said you was before. That's what I'm using, and just that pad users are thinking its H shifter advantage playing a big part. Yes, I'm still using paddle shifters for a number of reasons:

1) I don't have anwhere to mount the gear lever yet
2) I've only just got the wheel and I don't really have the time to practice enough (for this competition) to get to the required standard using the clutch although I hope to get round to it eventually.
3) I realise there is a slight advantage power shifting with the H gate and clutch but to be honest around the Eiger track, I think the time advantage gained through left foot braking all the way round the lap go kart style outweighs any time that might be lost through fractionally slower shifting on the very short straights.

The paddles are no quicker than shifting with a pad. The clear advantage to using a wheel is in the ability to modulate throttle, brake and steering inputs. I'm sure it is possible in theory to go as fast with a pad but the margins for error are much smaller and it would involve a lot of :scared:, and :ouch:

I think everyone should stop now until a couple of days before the end - there's no point stressing ourselves further :P

Keep it up everyone and go easy on my time Sphinx - it'd be nice to bask at the top of the leaderboard over the weekend.

To those who are posting top 20 times: cheers for the effort.

Yes, steering wheel users have an advantage, but don't think those using one are just jumping into the time trial and setting a top 10 laptime. I must have done about 100 laps now, and I still need to find an extra second somewhere.

Homeforsummer has shown it is possible to set a fast lap with a pad, it just requires a lot of effort (as with the wheel).
