I think tone settings change a bit sound, sound that we hear depends on SHIRAKAWA Akira's sound settings and our own computer's settings. When you hear car's sound in real life there is no any settings, so that could be one reason to difference.

BTW I don't hear big difference in M3 sounds... But when we can hear Delta S4's sound I will tell you how good the sounds are. That cars sound could be only good or total ****.

Shirakawa, if you see Audi S1 in credits or somewhere in game, please tell us because I would like to doubleconfirm that it is in the game.

Drive these races:
Rally D'Unbria Hard - Lancia Delta S4 Rally car '85
Rally D'Caburi Hard - Ford RS200 Rally car '85
Rally Grand Canyon Hard - Mitsubishi Starion 4WD Rally car '84
Ice race Hard - Nissan Bluebird Rally car '69
Rally D'Chamony Hard - Lancia Stratos Rally car '77
Rally D'George V Hard - Peugeot 205 T16 Evo II
Rally Swiss Alps Hard - Nissan 240RS Rally car '85
Tahiti Hard - Mitsubishi Pajero Rally Raid car '85
Tsukuba Wet race Hard - Ford GT '02
Rally Yosemite I Hard - Suzuki Escudo Dirt Trail car '98
Rally Yosemite II Hard - Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution Rally car

And get group b rally cars... I wonder is Audi S1 in or not? you can win other group b cars from those races, no S1... "Cano" was the one who confirmed that car...

I have downloaded the sounds from the American Muscle Cars.
The Chevelle 454 and the Corvette 350.

Ok, first comment, they dont sound like big scary V8 engines. I have rode in my friend's Camaro (with a 350 engine, that is 5.7L).

Now I have compared the 2 sounds. The sound from the 350 Corvette sounds like my dishwasher on wheels.
The sound from my friend's Camaro actually is deafening and has plenty of bass.

Then I got the sound from the 454 Chevelle (that is a HUGE 7.4L engine). It sounds like my dishwasher but with a subwoofer installed.

I dont know why you are treating this person like a hero, the sounds don't even sound good.

And to answer this person who said that the shifting sound in NFSU2 was the clutch. Well I dont know what kind of clutch you have in your car, but it sure makes a strange noise, you should take it to the garage. A clutch, and a shifter are supposed to be very very silent. If the engine is off, you can hear a small Clicking sound when you change gears, thats from the transmission.

They took that weird noise from the movie Fast And Furious and put it in the game (notice that all the sounds effects from that movie are in the game?).

What's your recording gear SHIRAKAWA ?

By the way its a very cool thread.

A simple cable from tv's headphone out to my pc's line in. Not hifi stuff, but there's no variation in sound tone.

Everybody: new car sounds will be added tomorrow. Sorry! No audi quattro.

Any Lotus Elan S1 '62? :)

It's not his fault they don't sound amazing, at least we're getting to find out what the cars sound like.

As much as I like these sounds, I do have to agree that NFSU sounds better (and I don't even have that game, although I may get it at some point).

PD needs to figure out what EA's doing with their sounds, maybe for GT5. Or, hire away some of EA's sound designers. That probably wouldn't be that hard, considering what we've heard about EA's treatment of it's employees. :)

I've herad that too, how they treat their employees like dirt. Polyphony has a freaking library and couches in there.

I've just read something a while ago about how the EA employees are trying to sue EA and this and that there and there. They don't pay them much, lay them off, working extra hours, etc.

I had a quick go at manipulating the M3 sounds a bit. I don't have all my audio tools at the moment, but I invite you to have a listen and do a side by side comparison.

I think the original sounds are a bit sterile in their equalizing. No presence, no high mids, no treble, with a lot of 'woodbox'-frequencies at 400-800Hz. I tried to bring it a bit alife. Especially the high-frequency area would need some special and careful treatment I I was to have a serious go.

My guess is that Kaz wanted to preserve our hearing capabilities. But, this way GTR beats GT4 in the sound department by a whole lot.

Yeah, that already sounds a nice bit more raspy and raw as the M3 does. Good job.
I could live with this sound I guess... still: close, but no cigar for PD :)

SHIRAKAWA Akira
Hi everybody

Since engine sounds in GT4 are much better than in previous games, I have recorded and converted to mp3 some sound samples of various cars available at start game in arcade mode, for everybody's pleasure. I've tried to record the sounds in most different situations.

Wow, the muscle cars sound like muscle cars now! Especially the Ford Mustang GT. Do the muscle cars rumble at idle? Are you using 5.1 with a powered sub? I used to have an S4 and the RS4 is pretty close to what the car sounded like too.

DAMN, hear that stage 2 turbo on that Evo. It sounds like they changed the BOV sound too. I wonder if you can buy different blow off valves too. For anyone with that sound clip, whats that sound when it just pulls off? I notice it in the other sound clips as well like when the car was gearing down. Is it like back fire sounds or what?

Below I have provided a few links from NFSU2's engine sounds for those of you that wish to compare and contrast.

Pontiac GTO

Lancer EVO VIII

Nissan 350Z

I have to agree. It seems like PD recorded the sounds from within the car in some cases instead of outside of the car. I have a friend with a 350Z with a nismo exhaust and a lot of other mods that the NFSU sound clip is pretty close to what his car sounds like at full throttle.

I agree the shifting sound comes from Fast and Furious or 2F2F. But for the record, the Porsche Boxster 2.7L makes a audible clicking noise when the clutch is fully depressed to let you know you don't need to apply any more pressure to the clutch pedal. Even if you don't have one, you could sit in one at the dealer to hear this click noise. I can't hear it when I'm driving the car at full throttle with the windows down as the engine note from behind you over powers the click. I do think the shift gate noise is missing from GT games though. The problem is, do they make a generic one or try to record the different noises from different shift gates? Some are notchy and others are silky smooth.

Nice thread :) i can't wait to race the nordschleife with a m3.
It would be great if you could post the mini cooper S sample, i really hope it sounds like mine ;p

Not having heard these cars in real life, all I can do is compare them to GT3, and to my ears, they sound much more crisp and detailed.

holly f-ck!
OMG OMG OMG!

I never thought I'd say this but :scared: PD need to get with EA! ... for their sounds! you have any idea how much more exciting just sounds can make a car game. and this is just ... faboulous. Imagine if all the GT cars had sounds reproduced in such detail like this. I LOVE YOU EA! :dunce:
(btw, this sounds exactly like forza's engine sounds.. something forza -will- have over GT4, anyone whos played the demo can confirm this, fantastic sounds, makes the game much more invigorating)

Very, Very dissapointed in the sound of the SRT-4. The car is much deeper sounding than that, plus is kind of "burbles" when slowing down.

Edit: Like this. (Right Click, Save As)

That sound clip came from this car:

Same with the SL500 ... does this look like it sounds like that??

"Engine sounds fabulous at speed and is like music to my ears, especially as the speedometer swings toward the right half of the dial"

...That is oppisite of GT car sounds. ^

Hopefully with GT5 it was be EA/Forza quality. I think I just might go out and buy NFSU2 right now after hearing those clips... ohhh the GTO. :scared:

Well... the only thing we can do is to hope they are recording and making the sound more realistic to GT5... :indiff:

I think the sound effect would be better on sound systems, for some reason the sound clips dont do much justice, you goto play the dam game in front of you.
