Wow cuz at 100mph I can totally tell if that tree is 3D or 2D. I think some of you guys are expecting GT5 to be the ultimate photo simulator... last time I checked its the ultimate driving simulator and when you are driving you usually are moving. The funny thing is all you nitpickers are probably looking at GT5 the same way KY does, "Its never perfect, its never perfect, it could always be better...".
 
Its a HUGE track, while on LONDON track GT5 uses more detail trees, on the full 24 Nur race, its over 13 miles! (dont know exact miles) they really have to use 2D trees to save some precious memory.

find me any game with 43 cars. Even in rFator on my good rig 50 cars is just too much...

Well rFactor isn't supposed to run on one type of hardware, GT5 is. So you can squeeze out a lot more. Not to mention there are what... 4 stock car bodies?
Dodge, Toyota, Ford, Chevy (am I missing any?) So it only loads up those 4 stock bodies and just changes up the decals/textures for it. Not to mention those have very little detail in them meaning it has less polygons to render (except for damage). It'll be easy to LOD those as well since it's such a basic shape.
 
The shape of the cars doesn't matter, the polycount is still the same.
The cars have very round shapes so a high polycount is needed and you also seem to forget that the game won't get a "NASCAR mode", there are just NASCARs in the game (plus maybe some special races where the AI drives them only too).
 
Then you're 99% sure to be dissapointed. There's no way we will see that number of cars on track. The games pushing the PS3 at 16 cars, be happy for what we;ve got. Look at Nascar as a new race series for GT rather than expecting an out and out Nascar simulation. There will be specific Nascar game for that, but regarding GT5 the Nascar and WRC aspects will have to fit around the GT5 engine which is very processor hungry due to the sheer level of detail and the number of physics calculations the game is running.

Nascar will most probably be a 16 car grid, that's all you should expect.

I think it'll at least be 20+. There are just so may technical aspects that point to why they can do that. Smaller tracks, less polys per car (no lush interiors/exotic exteriors) 4 stock car types (Dodge, Toyota, Chevy, Ford), easy LOD because of basic shapes, they can even tune down some of the graphics and probably not notice. I'll say AT LEAST 20.

The shape of the car does matter. It's like rendering a classic volvo vs the 458 Italia. The volvo has less curves, thus needing less polys to render rounded edges. Since the sides of a stock car is nearly flat, you can reduce the poly count to a very low amount and still have it look normal. It's basic modeling.

Well yeah it does have to render all that, and thats understood, but it requires less memory to get a 1 Honda Civic loaded several with AI and physics properties instead of loading up 16 different car models AI and physics properties. Because keep in mind, every body type has different lighting properties. For example. 1 car might have flat paint, and another might have a gloss. All those things add up to rendering a scene in real time.
 
I think Kaz is trying to tell us something, possibly a hint as to what may be in the final game?!?! I mean, if they already have it modeled...

I thought the same but Indiapolis not 13km...And they LOOK similar QUALITY-wise.
After realization i can say: trees are to yellow...all other looks extremely good! (it's green hell not yellow)

You're wrong, to put it bluntly. there will be 16 cars. If there are any more, it will come at a surprise. And it will most likely apply to all race events, not just NASCAR. There is nothing special about NASCAR that means it can defy the limits of the hardware.

Put it this way. In 2008, 230 cars competed in the Nurburgring 24 hours. The Nurburgring is in GT5. The event will most likely be in, as it was in GT4 and KY has competed in it himself. So that means we will get 230 cars in a race right? :rolleyes:

The Baja 1000 is a real race with countless vehicles, doesn't mean I think GT5 could do it. That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard in someone trying to justify their claim.

Nurburgring = 13 miles long with lots more detail than an oval course. Fact.
Stock cars are like GT cars (in appearance) but with less variety. Fact.
Less detail in both cars and track = more memory freed up. Fact.
What to do with that extra memory? Hmmm...... More cars?

Like I said, it's basic modeling. If you aren't achieving what you want due to too much resources being hogged by graphical assets, what do developers do? They cut corners that normally wouldn't be noticed as missing. FACT.

Every developer does it. If you don't think PD does that with their games, you're mistaken.

16 cars.You can count them in NASCAR trailer.Clearly 16.

All those cars were clearly Chevy, it doesn't mean they'll only have Chevy. What they've shown so far is an unfinished product.

I understand what you mean, and what everyone else means. Hardware can only take so much, not to mention with the polish that PD puts, but they are completely capable of hitting at least 20-25 cars. Just cut some corners...
 
What do you mean, no NASCAR mode... I want NASCAR mode and WRC. :grumpy:

There's just nothing to suggest there could be more than 16 cars on track. It was mentioned that 16 was the most the PS3 could handle, back when Prologue was released. The most we've seen is 16 (other than the really old Vision GT clip), and the online events we have now can't even always handle more than 12. I wouldn't get your hopes up, let alone start making declarative statements.

I think it was explained clearly why the same model of the same car repeated over and over on the screen isn't as hardware intensive as the same amount of different models. Nothing hardware defying. Nascar cars have very basic shapes. I don't see why they would make them the same number of polygons as more intricate vehicles. I don't believe every car in G5 is 400k polygons, I think that's the highest number they used on a car. I don't see how a daihatsu copen would require as many polygons as an Enzo or Murcielago.

They already cut about all possible corners...
No real reflections, no skidmarks, 2d trees and cartoon humans,no real wheel-spins, no real mirror reflections, trilinear mip-map filtering AND with all of that its ALREADY drops FPS when more than 3-4 cars are on screen close.And tear as hell.(last one is PS3 fault, memory bandwidth...).I don't think they can add more cars.And yeah no weather effects too.(better if i wrong!)

Don't get me wrong - i didn't say that such "cutting corners" are bad - response of the controls and feel are outstanding.But limits are limits.
