Any guesses on what the price for GT5 will be?

My guess is $89.00 Cdn.

At no point did anyone say they were announcing the release date at E3.

It's highly likely, but it's not certain. They might just wait until TGS you know...

If that's true, the game is coming out in December...sadly.

Well, i'm very hopeful of an E3 release date :D

But PD and Sony have been unpredictable in the past. Everyone was expecting a big announcement at E3 last year, and all we got was GTPSP. That is a handheld game and therefore little, not big :p

Here is a quote though..

"We know that the fans are waiting for it and we want to release it too. I think that it's more painful for us than for the fans that we couldn't hold the last date. The next time we announce a release date we'll be one-hundred per cent sure that we can hold it and won't make the mistake we did with the March date. You just have to wait a little longer until we announce a new date, only some days...or weeks"

Yeah lol, that's my pretty edgy translation two pages back with some minor changes ...
What would have been if I had written something completely different? I can't imagine that they corrected it before writing this news

Listened to the whole interview, and I'm getting the feeling that this guy is not only not allowed to tell anyone anything new, but that he also does not know the tiniest bit more than any of us. The things he said (i.e. ALL of them) have been announced in almost exactly the same wording by Sony/PD sources before.

As a matter of fact, I could have given the same interview.

I thought the same, he talks in the interview like he is involved in the developement or something like that ...but I rather think that he is just a random guy that knows as much as every Sony employee right now :)

Why? What would make it more expensive than any other release. A special edition version maybe, but I'm 100% positive you can get the game for $60.

I agree. Why would it cost more than the other games?

Yeah, but this time it's a whole new game. I'm expecting to see a release date in E3 too, but I want to see some more cars, tracks and in-game footage. Also, some more information on the features would be welcomed.

The question here is: Will PD effectively show the game? Detailing the gameplay mode, some events, giving info about Online, GT Auto.

Or they will just give us a date, show one more teaser and make us wait till TGS?

I'll stick with the first option. ;)

There have been hints that it is a 3 disc game, so I am guessing a little more expensive.

That was from a video, I'm pretty sure most people came to the conclusion that it was a game and two books of some kind (manual, art).

The funniest thing about it, is that Kaz was surprised when a interviewer asked about it. He didn't know that we dissect and analyze every video posted at GTP.

It's not entirely pointless- like the article in news page said, so that GT5 players can "get an idea of what the pros go through during one of the world’s toughest races." While the whole experience would be better but if that doesn't happen, it will still be pretty amazing. Sooner or later you have to realise that the PS3 has its limit.

I meant pointless in a sense that no race was held at 3am on the 'ring, or on any other racetrack for that mater, ever. And they did talk about recreating the 'ring 24h experience(not just racing around the 24h track layout), and you obviously can't do that without day-night cycles. On the other hand, if you can just choose the hour and there's no passage of time, I'd take that too if they are unable to do it properly.
Regarding PS3, the machine definitely has its limits, but people should stop talking about how these various features are only going to be possible on PS4/PS5 and GT6/GT7 as an excuse for PD!
It's a conscious choice, PD always went for abnormally detailed cars and nice lighting at the expense(regarding the power needed to run them, or the time needed to make them) of other features, be it more complex physics/AI, better sound, skidmarks, damage, higher quality track objects("aliveness" of the environments), day-night cycle, real-time weather or any of the other aspects not on par with car graphics...and blaming all of that on capabilities/limits of PS3 is just ignorant.
Lots of games feature many of those features as standard for years(some for a decade) and off the top of my head, a game that's not even that much focused on cars, has all of those features in it. GTA4. And runs just fine on PS3...and 360...and PC. Just sayin'...
Anyways, I love GT series, otherwise I wouldn't even be here arguing about it, but I'm not blind and I'm trying to be objective. I've seen what kind of graphics are possible on PS3 so far(no doubt it will get even better with time), but also what other developers can program in if they choose so/know how...
So, lay off the PS3 as a scapegoat and admit to yourself that the biggest chunk of responsibility goes to PD and their willingness, aptitude and choice making for the way GT series looked like, looks like and will look like in the future.

Regardless of the fact that GT5 is not going to be on 3 discs at all, the cost of the blu-ray disc is now only a few pence/cents greater than that of a standard DVD. Also, there have been very in-depth discussions in other threads about the storage GT5 will require on the disc. The consensus is due to the nature of the game, it will not take up so much memory because the content is mostly just Graphics engine, physics engine (Including damage and collision physics), polygons models, texture maps and sound samples for each car, so it will only likely take up 25-30GB at most because it's all heavy stuff that the console has to process and is not big on storage. Whereas games like MGS4 and FFXIII (which still don't even come close to filling their Dual layered Blu-rays by the way) are heavy on pre-rendered cut-scenes, FMVs and also uncompressed sound files and audio to go with those cut scenes, which are all storage hungry things.

All I have to say that you should read what you've just wrote. It's from the same "objective" perspective I've read countless of times since I've began participating in this forum. My advise is to look up the word "ignorant" and slowly step out of the shoes you're in right now and spend a few minutes trying to understand what that word actually means.

What PD have done is model the cars, and create the lighting and texture quality on the cars to such a high standard that they don't even need to touch them for the next game, which means they can focus on everything else.

It's saved them time in the next development cycle, because they don't have to re-do all 1000 cars again like they had to do this time.

You speak of ignorance, but you don't know how ignorant we all are. PD have a lot of people working for them and they know what they are doing. They will have discussed all this and worked out the best way of doing things years ago, probably before the PS3s release. Then they just had to get on with it, which they did.

They've optimised the game to squeeze as much power out of the cell processor as possible. They will have experimented a lot with different numbers of cars, different level of model detail, different lighting effects, anti-aliasing etc. They were aiming for 60 fps to give seemless visual feedback, and they aimed for 1080p native resolution presumably to give the best visuals and to be a step ahead of the competition (The competition referring to most other developers who still mainly use 720p native resolution).

You might as well could've wrote nothing instead of patronizing without a point...

I'm well aware of the fact about car detail you mentioned, and I said so my self, I'm just questioning the whole concept of near-CG-quality-cars/mediocre almost everything else.
The other thing I'm getting tired of, is people making excuses in PD's name for lack of features that existed years and years ago on much weaker systems in other games, and suddenly that stuff is unachievable until PS4/5 or whatever, which just isn't true to put it mildly.

You're going to end up with your own words being flung back in your face on this because
  • You have no idea whatsoever what the Cell usage budget is for all the aspects of the demos we've seen so far.
  • Considering what we've seen of the demos so far, Kaz and his team have done near impossible feats with the PS3, to the point that people are tricked into thinking Prologue replays are real life film footage. Including background details. And Prologue is old.
If it's doable, and doable within a reasonable time frame, it will be done. What you typed is a bunch of flatulence.

And they look like what? Just askin'.

Refer to my paragraphs above referring to photo-realism, if my point isn't clear. Metal Gear Solid 4, both Uncharteds and Killzone 2 are graphical masterpieces, and games with a load of content and gameplay features. But no one is going to be fooled into thinking they're watching a war movie.

You obviously think that something like GT5 is no big deal to pull off now. Perhaps you can mention the other games coming out on the same level.

Hi speedfreak69, nice to see you outside the Jalopnik commentariat. ;)

If PD don't focus on the graphics then they wouldn't have the edge in one of the three major defining factors that make GT games standout, the graphics, physics and the car count.

I'm in favour of future-proofing GT, meaning PD can then focus on the peripherals, to round out the game features in the next version. Great graphics, physics and a huge roster of cars is a strong foundation and if those basic attributes measure as mediocre, it brings the quality of any other features down to that level. There are games out there that fill that formula, yet they've still been outsold, on the PS3, by Prologue.

Just because something has been done in a different game, doesn't mean it can be done, to level of quality that fits in the game, so far. That, and the time it takes to implement these things, are the two biggest hurdles, with computing power also playing a prominent roll.

We are all unaware of all the factors involved, so to preach 'they should' does carry an air of ignorance. Ignoring the time, effort, resources, and most importantly, the limitations, required to do work of this quality.

I mean, is that new model of the Nürbrugring not just about the most amazing thing ever seen in a racing game? If not, I'd love to see what is. Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I don't have to know what's the freakin' cell usage budget when I see a game(GTA4 for example) which has all of those features working at the same time with no problems now, do I?

We're going in circles. I admit I'm amazed each time when I see new GT5 pics, but a large part of that amazement is attributed to the cars themselves and the lighting. If you were to remove the cars and the lighting from the formula of this game and objectively analyzed other parts and features of the game, they wouldn't be exactly stellar I think...

Oh yeah, GTAIV, in sub HD with not even constant 30 frames, not so complex lighting and less polygons at once on the screen, yeah makes sense.

I guess we could take the cars from GT5, improve the backgrounds a bit, and Kaz could release a sightseeing version too. "The Real Walking Simulator."

I don't get what your saying man? If I take the livery, custom tunning from Forza3 what do you have? You can say that for every game. What makes Forza3 good is how you can tune and hook up your car to your liking, GT Is about the cars(the cars are the stars) and the special attention to detail through out the game.

Hello to you too, the most Forgetful of all the Jalopniks...wait, that didn't come out right!:D;)
How do I sum up my feelings on GT series, I've played all of it, I admire it, I respect it, but as big fan that I am, I always expect more and better with every new game, while realizing its weak points. Therefore, I'm irked by the people who think things are perfect as they are in any given moment. If everyone was of that frame of mind, the series would probably stagnate and there would be no major progress. That's my gripe with those kinds of opinions...
p.s. The new 'ring model is pretty sweet!;)

Oh? Very solid physics and over 900 cars isn't stellar?

Oh? Very solid physics and over 900 cars isn't stellar?

Well, cars themselves(and their number) were always GT's strong point, whereas its physics wasn't one of the best, it was decent, and even in the latest build people tried(the TT), there was some kind of a consensus that they are better than Prologue, but still a fair share of people(judging by this forum) weren't quite satisfied. I hope the full version will meet our expectations...

Let's not ridicule Speedfreak69 by throwing his own argument in his face. He spoke of ignorance; Seismica elaborated - we are all ignorant.

Hence, it is no more acceptable to be saying PD can't / shouldn't do certain things with the game because of X, Y and Z, than it is to say they have no reason not to be able to.

Put simply, it's PD's game. They've done what they want with it - granted, with some indirect consultation of market expectations, but they've made the choices, they've taken the game in the direction they have, and made the necessary compromises. What's wrong with recognising that? If PD had made different choices, we'd have a different game - we'd have "3D" trees everywhere, skidmarks, reversing lights, races only run at current local time, your own racing team, your own racing chassis? etc. etc. etc.

The point is, accept that GT has its flaws, and this is the fault of PD.
At the same time, it's a technical, artistic and logistical masterpiece - this is also PD's fault.
:)

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, maybe it's just late(4:00am), but although I agree we have to accept GT has its flaws, I also think the way we accept it in itself is equally important! So, I'd suggest not a defeatist acceptance(well, it is what it is, and that's that), but a more proactive acceptance with constructive criticism, objectivity(as much as we can...), comparisons and debates. If it wasn't for the fans(and journalists too), making all the virtual noise, GT5 probably wouldn't have damage, or old school campaign mode(there was talk about a quicker more arcadey campaign mode, until everyone criticized GT-PSP for the precisely the same thing) or who knows how many other features that the fans on forums like this asked for and will subsequently get, not even knowing they had a role in it(you can be sure, part of someone's job at PD is to keep an eye on the community, even though it's usually a one way street deal, sadly).
Also, I distinctly remember the change in KY's stance about other games too. For years, it was "I don't look at or play other games, I have my vision" until recently when he fessed up that he did actually play the latest Forza and some others, and evaluated them as a game designer bla bla...that's just him finally coming to terms publicly, that he can't just dish out a game without half the stuff all the other games have had for some time, and that's why I'm grateful that Forza, as a prime example, did so good, that KY felt he needed to up his game to match and then hopefully surpass it.
Although, I'm known to criticize something I consider sub par, I do have high hopes for this game and I trust KY has a few aces in his sleeves.
Come on E3!:)

By the way, from another board I read that some people in Japan have played the GT5 3D demo at Roppongi and there are mixed feelings about it. Some liked it, some found it overall as a step backwards, by taking the 3d out of context. To be honest I'm not sure who is trolling and who is not.

- It seems it was the latest build
- Graphics in 3D looked worse, jaggier than normal, might have been running at 720p or less
- Slowdowns at race start and with certain cars in front of the player's own, especially the FT-86
- Frame rate stabilized at around 30 fps, it seems
- Physics similar to the Time Trial version
- It appears that even with normal physics cars were very hard to drive. Most people wouldn't be able to drive them properly
- Nuerburbring track graphic quality has been reported to be disappointing. Trees were still cross-shaped
- Some of the cars available were [I'm copypasting here]: GT-R SpecV, ARTA NSX, SC430, FT-86, Impreza WRC, SLS AMG, HKS, 458 Italia, Motul Autech GT-R, etc. It seems only the Impreza WRC had damage enabled.

From the pics, it has the old GT4 HD Nurburgring, as I metioned earlier
Same tracks and cars as CES demo. Probably the exact same 3D demo as the CES too....

From what I saw from the new Nurb demo, standard physics is inbetween the Prologue's Standard and Pro Physics, while new Pro physics is even more hardcore, like PC sims :)
There is oversteer now in Standard physics, even with S3 tyres, unlike the arcadey/GT4'ish standard physics in Prologue.
Pro physics doesn't seen to have ABS brakes anymore
