G4TV released a new Gran Turismo 5 preview yesterday and aside from more car porn, a few interesting tidbits pertaining to NASCAR could be seen for a few seconds. We spotted five items worth noting in the screenshot below;
1. While we’ve seen a lot of NASCAR footage in GT5 previews, and we’ve heard a lot as well, it appears we’ll only get to race 8 cars per race. While the game can run “up to” 16 cars a race, that doesn’t appear to apply to NASCAR.
2. The attention to detail. We know Polyphony Digital are perfectionists, but this is some insane stuff. Here you see the Target decals on the pillar, exactly where it is in real life. We canÂ’t wait to get this game in-house and have a full look around the cockpit.
3. Mirrors are an interesting feature in racing games. YouÂ’re essentially rendering the game from a different perspective in real-time while the player races. Here we see both the main rear-view mirror and the side mirror many drivers rely on due to the constraints of their racing seats. And of course everything in the mirrors is rather detailed.
4. It may be hard to see but it appears to be the right hand of the driver. Now, drivers are nothing new in Gran Turismo but itÂ’s the small things that add up to make a great experience. Last we checked, however, all drivers in-game will be GT branded.
5. WeÂ’re not sure how old the G4TV preview build was but it appears Polyphony Digital still has a bit of tweaking to do if they want to get it absolutely right. Here you can see the lap time is a 47:700, which is about 1.675 seconds faster than the pole speed set by Juan Pablo Montoya at Indy a few weeks ago. Granted, the game still has a few months before it ships, but itÂ’ll be interesting to see if PD fixes this or not.

That all said, and we donÂ’t mean to throw EA under the bus here, but this could very well be the best NASCAR game to come along for fans in years, and thatÂ’s saying a lot considering this isnÂ’t a full-fledged NASCAR game. While 8 cars on track seems a bit low, weÂ’ve also been promised heavy damaging to these cars so it would make sense that the developers needed to limited what was on screen. Whether these are the final numbers, only PD know, so weÂ’ll have to wait until November 2nd to find out.

Someone already mentioned this but points 1 and 5 are wrong. All the demos had 8 or 10 cars so it's not just NASCAR, and we've seen 16 car gameplay (just not in a playable demo yet). As for point 5, it's laughable for them to make such a mistake. The time they highlight is the current laptime. As you can see on the map, they car is nowhere near the finish line yet they think that's the final lap time. Fail more, please.

Agree. And we have seen NASCAR preview videos with full 16 grid. But all playable demos were just 8. The time made me laugh, its current time, not best lap last lap, lol.

And this is why I don't count on G4 for anything GT. They don't care and don't know what the hell they are talking about. I swear we need someone who is actually knowledgeable about racing and racing games because the show is clearly run by people whos heads are shoved too far up the ass of boring MMOs, RPGS and WOW.

Probably because to the average casual gamer, who plays multiple genres... racing is pretty boring. Even I'll admit that most friends would much rather play a different genre. The sim-racing obsessed that make up this site are still a tiny minority compared to the huge total number of gamers out there.

G4 didn't write that, whenspamattacks.com did. They got the footage and made a article on it from a G4 video.

Juan Montoya was doing about 168 mph at the apex of the turns and 205mph at the end of the straights during his pole lap at Indianapolis.

The above screenshot looks like it was taken from that one NASCAR video with elevator music. In that video he only managed to go through one of the turns at over 155mph just once, most of the time him and the AI were creeping through them at 145 or so mph. Top speed was all over the place with the unrealistic draft though

Motoya's pole lap was 49.38. The driver in the video never got close to that

Heres the video

Yeah, the G4 preview was actually pretty positive.

Unfortunately, thats probably the biggest reason. Guess thats the price for showing interest in a Niche Genre that in my opinion has way more interesting stuff then all these other ones.

I just noticed the link, now I feel like a complete idiot for missing that *facepalm*

Yeah, the G4 preview was actually pretty positive.

Is there a video of that preview, or is it just an article?

Some of the older demos of the Nurb we have seen loaded pretty quickly

Yeah. Noticed that too. The old demos loaded very fast while the most recent ones load sloooooowly. Not looking good. But it's gran turismo, we should be used to long waiting times.

I still believe if the loading times are long'ish it's for a good reason not because of poor optimizing. We can't get all (yet) I'm afraid.

It's no use making real life lap times comparison with things like tyres playing a major part.

Kaz said this was one thing he tried to improve was targeting real life lap times.

Is there a video of that preview, or is it just an article?
They may have it on their Website or Hulu or something like that may have it.

Basically it was just stuff we already know, but they used phrases like "racing game to end all racing games" and "we can't wait to play it" and then treated it like it was a fancy Mercedes ad because of how great the visuals are.

Morgan Webb did screw up and say it releases on November 5th, though.

jeez Kotaku sucks.

Is this Kotaku site run from within Dan Greenawalt's lair?

Someone restored the video and as you can see it was slowed down a lot.

Wow. Was this done for traffic? Was it an Xbot thing?

Needless to say, I won't go back to Kotaku again.

It was GT5rs's fault not kotakus.

Ah, so the one who should have checked the "source" before running the rumor is excused?

Like I said, I won't be visiting the site anymore.👎

It's amazing how quickly fanboys get all frothy at the mouth over this. "Kotaku's smear campaign"? Kaz himself said it isn't done, so that article wasn't inaccurate. The Signature Edition being stupidly expensive is also true. The only mistake I can see that they made was reposting a video that's been tampered with and not being bright enough to notice. So they're not terribly smart, but it's not much of a smear campaign if PD's the one providing the ammo for 2/3 of the stories :).

Almost as amazing as the "realists" who do their part in sustaining a massive thread over GT5 car models.

Between the left side and right side of the fence, people are sure crazy.

:)

Good. Tired of reading people bickering back and forth trying to find stuff to argue over.

Did you really expect any? I don't remember learning anything from this thread in a while.

its seems like the fraps dropped from the video that is all,but I have seen a couple of videos and it does take like :45 and 1:10 in loading nurburgring,so maybe kotaku did a fuss about it.

It does takes its time(not to mention that an article about it is kind of silly in my opinion)but is just betas after all.

the real game will take at least 2:00 to load nurburgring,(its what forza takes to load the same track from HD)

The restored video a few posts up takes 45 seconds flat for the bar to reach 100.

It just occurred to me that no one has brought up LAN play. Will GT5 have LAN play? It will be a shame if this feature isn't included. I ask because I've noticed the lack of LAN play in many games this generation.
