They always have been. Too insane, too arcade-ish for me. I prefer the realisticness of the GTA series, which is, ironically enough, why I continue to buy and play them. Yeah GTA has had it's moments but for the most part, thats why. You can even see it in these new screenshots.

To me the worlds in GTA are far more interesting, and now with the addition of animals in the enviroment and a world as large as GTA V, why would you want to play SR?
I have grown up a GTA fan since the very first game. Loved Vice City and San Andreas. Some of the most epic gaming moments I will never forget. Then GTA4 came out and IMO SR2 destroyed GTA4. I really hate to get into this again but honestly imagine GTA but as an entire full co-op campaign experience. Thats Saints Row 2 and SR3. Also this is very important, if you are playing SR2 or SR3 solo then you are doing it wrong. But as a massive fan of GTA and sandbox games, Saints Row 2 is easily THE best sandbox experience I have ever had. I will echo.... full co-op campaign sandbox game. You can do EVERYTHING together with a friend along with FULL customization. THATS why people love SR2 and SR3 so much. They are just so much FUN. :)

With that said I really really hope Rockstar uses a lot of the ideas from SR2 and SR3 and creates some sort of epic co-op experience. I am very excited for GTA5 but I was also very excited for GTA4 and it was one of the most disappointing games of this gen IMO. SR2 and SR3 destroyed GTA4 by a long shot imo.

I am really hoping GTA5 has a co-op mode similar to RDR with up to 16 players. Some 16 player co-op modes would be a blast and I know GTA can do it after how well it worked in RDR. I am not talking multiplayer, I mean full co-op missions. Take over this bank, or take over this building, stuff like that. OR a full co-op campaign with at least 2-4 players.

I'd have put 3+ then changed it tomorrow proclaiming April Fools to all the outraged mothers worldwide.

So, the PEGI rating should be

(

),
Newpegi_violence.gif
,
Newpegi_profanity.gif
and

as a minimum :D?

Watch the world rage haha.

See that's the thing with me is no one wants to play all the together at least around me. SR2 had lots of customization though, I will give it that. I feel Rockstar can one up SR in customization though if they tried and I hope GTA V comes through.

People enjoyed the SR series because it was over the top dialogue, weapons, & overall gameplay. The story line sucked, so I don't know how anyone came to conclusion it was better played with someone else than alone.

The only thing SR fans had against GTA IV is that it went in a completely, serious route with the storyline & that they removed a lot of the activities. While that bummed me out, I agree with Slash that I still prefer how Rockstar takes a more realistic approach to its games. Beating people with a 12 foot long dildo or shooting them out of a tank cannon holds amusement only so far.

Let's prefer they don't. SR's developers are the ones who know GTA has continuously kept the bar where it's at, else they wouldn't be shooting to beat them to a release date. The only thing Rockstar should be doing is reimplementing ideas from SA, which is what they seem to be doing.

How do you propose that when we all know there's missions that involve only 1 to 2 characters at a time?

You might as well stick with SR4 by the sound of it. Enough info has been released to get a general idea of how V's storyline will go with 3 characters.

I also agree with Slash and McLaren, besides lacking many of the activities I love the direction they went with GTA IV. I have made a couple attempts at playing the SR series and I just don't like them.

I really don't see them as competitors anymore, they fill two seperate markets.

I don't think Volition wants the SR series to be a competitor. I think they said that in a video. They just made the game to be over the top fun. But, it does fill two seperate markets.

I may be wrong though.

This.

I bought SR3, and enjoyed it for what it was. They may have started out at SR and SR2 as competitors, but the wierd **** that goes on in SR3 fixed that. Very disappointed that the person cannon was DLC, which I didn't buy, as I wanted to have a go at it for a laugh.
Will definitely be buying GTA, and there is every chance I will get SR4 too.

Just to confirm, did the say the map will be 5 times bigger than San Andreas or Liberty City?

The amp will be 5 times larger than the GTA IV rendition of Liberty City, and will be able to hold GTA IV's map, San Andreas and Red Dead Redemptions map combined, all in one with room to spare.

That's going to be one big ass map.

I really hope that GTA V will all be unlocked from the start, which IIRC Rockstar said it would be this time. That would be nice.

Also does anyone else notice that in a lot of the screens where they are out in the desert or in the forest see Mount Chiliad in the background? I remember seeing a screen where it put Los Santos on the waterfront...maybe the city is on a corner of the map and those pictures being in the scenery the city is behind the mountain....

Same here, but I'll still do the story regardless though. Even though it will be a option just like the older ones, but after EFLC and CTW, they will probably make the map unlocked and maybe all of the weapons available at the start.

If thats going to happen, then I will slowly complete the story then and just travel. But then you got three people to play with and you have to do the story maybe to unlock them all. Who knows.

And I have a feeling that San Fierro and Las Venturas could be in the progress of development.... Since the desert is in there and the costal region.

I think (and hope) Rockstar will make the map, a bit like SA. Big and small cities, deserts, mountains etc. That could be a reason... - It would be really nice to have a map like that, which is bigger :D.

I can't wait to see my hometown in GTA V again! :D

But Rockstar has confirmed that those 2 cities will not be returning. Period.

......in the vanilla game. No one said anything about DLC.

They did however say that they wouldn't be doing such large, almost new game type DLC this time. Therefore the chances of a whole new city being added as DLC is highly unlikely.

Well, when you have a city this big...... you don't really need DLC Cities.

I would not hold out hope for those 2. This map seems like it's going to be packing enough size & detail as is. Trying to bring back San Fierro & Las Venturas (esp. since it's based on Vegas) to the level they've created for Los Santos alone will be a large undertaking, even as DLC.

I don't think they would have shot for August release date after Rockstar finally announced their September release if they didn't want to steal some sort of hype from it. No mistake though, that's how they started.

Now, while I knew SR4 was coming out, I had no idea that this would be the storyline they shot for.
The game is a direct sequel to Saints Row: The Third. It is set in a fictional Washington, D.C. and futuristic Steelport, and the Saints leader has been elected president. As the leader was elected, an alien invasion occurs and the earth is overrun.[21]
As aforementioned, it's going for the most ridiculous storyline they can think of & that's what they hope will draw people into it. If Rockstar attempted this, there'd be backlash for sure.

This is why I'm not holding high hopes for it. Yeah it would be cool but it would also be totally unnessecary for the same points you've already stated.

This agian.

This, sorry to say, is what turns me off from the series. Just not my cup of tea. I was all good up until the alien nivasion. Then it got dumb. Sure I realise what it's supposed to be but it just turns me away. I'll stick to the realistic GTA series, where it mimics real life. That is what kept me playing all these years.

Since the map will be open from the start, I'm going to likely end up saying screw the story I want to explore the map.

I've been thinking about this too. I'm not sure whether I'll focus on the story or do a bit of exploring myself. I'm sure the game world will be excellent and I look forward to exploring it, but I'm not sure whether I'll do so by myself or if I'll wait for the game to introduce me to new areas.

It's a shame this is coming so late in the generation. I kind of miss the "New GTA every year/ 2 years. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're putting this much effort into it, but I wouldn't complain if they released a sequel a year later with only minor enhancements but a new map and story. I was expecting them to do this after IV but we all know it didn't materialize.

Well, I was going by SR3, but they had said it would be in the calendar 2013 year in late December. Who knew they'd shoot for August?

I could still be very wrong about this, but the new president, could want to take some hype from GTA, but what does it matter? People still gonna buy GTA, even if SR4 comes out a month before. I know I am.

But I see things like this, if SR4 did come out later than GTA, you may not have as many sales at first because people are still heavy and deep into GTA. So, why not get your product out first and get the sales that you can.

Well, naturally, people are going to buy GTA regardless of SR or not; it's arguably amongst the Top 5 of the biggest gaming franchises out there.

I think the issue that gets brought up revolves around the fact that the only GTA game Saints Row has ever actually competed against was IV, the one GTA game that actually disappointed a lot of people because it went in a more serious direction. SR2 was able to capture those people away because it added a lot of the random activities people liked & threw in co-op for a larger appeal, esp. since it was released right after.

SR3 had the sandbox game market pretty well cornered as all it would have to do is build upon SR2, which it did and just went over the top even more with the design of its content.

Now that GTA V is on the way, the Saints Row franchise knows it will once again be competing in the sandbox game genre with someone else. Except this time, Rockstar has had time to learn from IV & give back what fans had been wanting. SR4 however, has written itself into this completely bizarre storyline well beyond what they started with in the 1st & 2nd one, & have to add upon the crazy, fantasy features SR3 gained notice for.

They're going for the same genre again, but offering different attempts at sandbox games; fantasy vs realism. And I think Deep Silver knows that while they'll have their SR3 fanbase covered, they'll have a hard time attracting attention away from such a big title that's recreated its newest iteration on the foundations of its most popular title.

So, something like this, in size;

(Yes, I know it's fan made, but I'm only thinking about the size of the map)?

Little hard to tell without good reference, but that fan map looks smaller than it is going to be, especially if I use the airport as reference.
