With the exception of the Insight (and I'm being generous), those are some rather far-fetched examples. Each of those cars you listed achieve nearly the same fuel economy as a Prius, but that's the only regard in which they're comparable. If you can even find a 1986 Chevy Sprint, or to a lesser extend the Civic or the Metro, you're gonna have to deal with a noisy ride, a lack of amenities and seriously compromised safety. The Prius sells so well because it's basically like buying any other modern $25k car, except that it gets really, really good gas mileage.
