I'd also like to add that a blog has no credibility as a source. You may as well be telling me that you live on the Death Star and that you're married to Princess Leia.

I saw on Top Gear that making the car is actually a massive worldwide operation, because the batteries are made in a different part of the world from the rest of the car. Meaning that ships have to cover great distances to manufacture the car in comparison to other vehicles.

The same thing applies for pretty much every single car made these days.

I voted cool just because it makes "enthusiasts" so angry for no reason. They aren't terribly exciting, but everyone I've ever known with one has been a pretty decent person and only bought it because it gets good mileage.

I think hybrids can be very, very good when executed properly like the first gen. Honda Insight.

The Prius however has never been any good. It gets more or less the same mileage as any regular hatchback, its only marginally bigger and costs considerably more. Oh, and it looks like a complete turd. Seriously uncool.

In response to the actual topic though, I find the Prius "meh". Sure, it gives you good mileage but I think I'll wait for the tesla model 3 instead.

There'd be no reason for manufacturers to start making "cool" hybrids.

That seems to be a mixed bag, according to some reviews - in some cases it has worse city, motorway and combined mileage than my old Spacestar 1.9 diesel, a car that I hated but couldn't find anything cheaper for doing 1,000 miles a week.

Still, the Prius is a very economical choice in overall financial terms.. For me though... I wouldn't buy it whatever the engine/powertrain, I just hate how it looks. Deep, right?

The only thing I could think of that's not a hybrid is maybe the Golf TDI, but that's not exactly a run of the mill hatchback.

It gets good mpg. However you need to own one long term (somewhere around 50,000-75,000 miles depending on gas prices) to reach the break even point.

If you go short term ownership, it makes more financial sense to just get a Carolla, etc.

With the exception of the Insight (and I'm being generous), those are some rather far-fetched examples. Each of those cars you listed achieve nearly the same fuel economy as a Prius, but that's the only regard in which they're comparable. If you can even find a 1986 Chevy Sprint, or to a lesser extend the Civic or the Metro, you're gonna have to deal with a noisy ride, a lack of amenities and seriously compromised safety. The Prius sells so well because it's basically like buying any other modern $25k car, except that it gets really, really good gas mileage.

Never said they are nice to drive, but just disproving the claim that the Prius is the lord and king when it comes to raw MPG figures.

Numbers I got were directly from fueleconomy.gov. Cross checked with other websites/forums so my figures are pretty accurate. With minor modifications many owners were getting mid 60's.

And none of them have anywhere near the same safety, the same low level of emissions or anywhere near the same space.

For Prius levels of space, you'd be looking at something like a 1992 Accord... or perhaps even a 1996.

That said, for total cost of ownership, nothing much beats a Geo Metro.

But the new Mirage should come very close.
