Another update on the RX-7. Ayyyyy

Didn't think I was going to go with white as the choice of colour, but I'm sad to report that because I'm using a light colour, the surface imperfections are bright as day, but seeing as how delayed this project is, I'm going to live with it and/or cover it up somehow.

That totally doesn't look like white for some reason. Probably spent an hour getting the paint to finally work on the airbrush... god I hate setting up on that thing.

Wheels as is: gloss grey...

wheels now: gun metal.

Too bad for those inperfections, the paint doesn't look that good...maybe triyng with some tamiya polish?
BTW Really looking forward for this project, maybe you'll manage to save it and make a great job!
I want to customize some models too but that would be like the first time using an airbrush and I bet I'll need lots of practice, I'm saving some old kits/diecast for that purpose before start doing something more interesting.
I want to get a Paasche model h, i've seen quite a lot of good reviews for this model, the finish using enamel paints is unbelievable and it's cheaper than others.
And a little compressor by Sparmax...maybe the TC610H model

Anyway...this pit crew looks rather interesting...but it's 1:20, how will it fit a 1:18 diorama? The only mechanic crews are by Minichamps and TSM but all branded, and the costs is too high for customizing IMO.

BONUS!
My first attempt recreating the shape of the Grand Valley with plywood, hope you guys like it, hand made using only a hacksaw, some files and sandpaper.
I masked the contour lines in order to paint them after but I had to retouch with the white paint...next time I will try stapling or better...the airbrush.

The paint is very textured because I was spraying at a distance farther than ideal. I'm respraying this on the weekend as I realize my layers are still too thin; the grey primer underneath is still visible.

Airbrushing is a real PITA if you do a bad job thinning your paint or use stuff that was not naturally intended for an airbrush. General rule of thumb I'm keeping to with my little experience is that after stirring the paint and thinner together in the little cup that's attached to your airbrush, if the stuff drips off your stirring stick like milk or water, it's thin enough. Any thicker and it could easily jam at the nozzle tip.

Any jams at the nozzle tip are not fun to clean, and the unit's needle you will be ever so tempted to poke out the jam with can bend easily. Once that bends, you can compromise the quality of your sprays or even render it unusable as the curve tip will no longer fit through the nozzle.

If you grab paints that are designed for airbrush use, you'll have a much easier time getting going. Cleaning up in general won't be though. If you want to be ambitious like me and use nail polish, make damn sure you have high quality thinner.

This Lambo was the first time I've tried spraying nail polish:

Lambo+Diablo+SV_final10.jpg

Didn't end well as it kept thickening and jamming. I didn't keep a consistent distance when spraying so there are spots more saturated than others.

This one is the latest nail polish work:

When you get that thinning just right, everything sprays out smoothly, and that's the best experience you'll ever have with these finnicky things.

Awesome. You've volunteered to be our guinea pig in purchasing the IMSA Mazda. Your efforts to our good cause will not be in vain. :P

@AOS- Since I don't want to jam a 50€+ airbrush I will use Tamiya acrylic or those famous pre thinned Zero paints, but the less toxic the better, so I'll stick with laquer paints only for primer and maybe the clear coat.
@Venom800tt hehe now we all want a review, I decided to buy some inexpensive models instead, for "modding purposes".

I'm using a $30 dual action. Not brand-spanking high quality, but I've made it work. Also get yourself a respirator. You really do not want to breath in atomized chemicals. If I airbrushed more frequently, I'd feel better if I could get a full-face respirator so my eyeballs aren't absorbing any of it.

Oh snap:

Yep, the respirator was included in my shopping list, personaly I'd rather prefer a half face mask and a pair of safety goggles, looks more practical and maybe you have a better seal as well

@AOS-
@Vitocorp

First impression is it is pretty much a Spark in terms of detail. Might take some more pics after work and go into more detail. I guess a quick review then.
Now I just wish TSM or Spark would do the RX-792P in 1/18...

The world needs more 1:18 Group C/GTP cars
Yes, yes it does.
I think one of the ones I want to see the most is the Allard J2X-C, even if it was a failure. Also a 1/18 Gunnar Porsche 966 would be nice, namely the Brumos Racing one like the 1/43 TSM that I have.

1+2%3D3.jpg

I still remember this ambitious guy who made the R8C 1:18, I wish I could reach that level of skills to make one.
The Allard is surely one of the most interesting prototypes, personally, I would like the Alfa 048 Sport Prototipo.

Ignition needs to turn some of their 1:43s into 1:18.
Not just Ignition, but Spark also. Spark has a ton of their 1/43's that were never made into 1/18. I also wish HPI stayed in the diecast/resin business too, since they made some really nice stuff. Anyway expect some better pics of the RX-7 and SCG P4/5 later tonight...

And here are some more pics of that really wide quad rotor powered FC3S RX-7, which was dominant in IMSA at the start of the 90's.
Being my first resin TSM (not counting the Top Speed Ford GT), it feels and is detailed identically to a Spark. In fact, it is so similar to a Spark that if it didn't say TSM on the box I'd think it was a Spark. Front grille is perforated, along with the side grille for the exhaust. The surround around the exhaust outlets is a really shiny piece of photoetched metal bent into a funky shape to fit around the curve that area has. The seat belts are fabric and the wheel has a rough, rubbery feel to it like many Signature AUTOarts. Overall a rather nice model and looks great in my collection of Mazdas.

I believe TSM and Spark do share the same assembly line, also sharing some of the molds too, 12C and Continental GT GT3 came to mind.

@Venom800tt she looks sooo nice, a very interesting piece, Cartima now has two of them, as far as I checked on eBay they are the last ones.
I decided to pass for the moment because it would be 200€ for a single model (about the discounts, well, we still have to pay VAT on it...).
And a cheap XJR-9 by Exoto just appeared on eBay, I'm following the auction and see if I can get for a reasonable price.
On the other hand the Nissan Nismo GT-R LM, the 2015 test car from Autoart looks quite interesting.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and pics. Those latches and mesh on the right door are super nice to see.

Helloooo

Box, clamshell and base not apparent enough for ya????

What!

Thought you may have noticed by now that the bases are the exact same size, the clamshells house the base the same way, the boxes are even the same sizes!

Bruh.

Spark also share the plastic bases of the Porsche road cars with GT Spirit. Parts sharing are very common in this industry, I honestly don't know if those guys are related or not.

GTS has bases now? For special editions? I've never heard of this.

They have been selling display cases on their website and other euro webshops for quite some time. The exact same design that GTS and Spark use for Porsche DEs.

It's still not going to get me to cave, but this does honestly look very well made (I'm eyeing the inner stuff in particular; brakes and intercooler). And those dimples for the rivets and stuff too. Dang.

Any recommended Ottomobile vendors? I'm really tempted to get the Deep Fuschia S14 as my friend has one that looks...pretty much exactly like it. Never bought an Otto before, so I don't know what would be a reasonable price...

Otto's prices stay at about.... whatever you find on Otto's site. Any more you find elsewhere is paying the reseller. Just don't fall for certain sellers who mark up 30% higher than MSRP.

May also need to preorder since its a Japanese '90s car.

As for vendors, buy from them directly... ck-modelcars, little bolide, modelissimo... get your 10% discount through one of two forums DiecastXchange or DiecastSociety.

It's already been released, so...that probably doesn't help the prices. :indiff: Probably should have pre-ordered it when I had the chance rather than hesitating. "Cheapest" one I saw on eBay was $112 with $30 shipping from China... Doesn't seem like the vendors you mentioned have it.

@MedigoFlame

In that case, it might not hurt to play the waiting game for a bit longer. For all we know, Otto may release another one, or some schmuck who can't manage his spendings will let one go in the future. In either case, buddy, I'd stay connected with the Buy/Sell/Trade and Diecast News from DiecastXchange or DiecastSociety.

I'm in no rush to get one, so I could wait. Though, would they ever re-release a model in the same color? I would imagine they'd just change the color.

Forged empty quote

Nah. You lose if you'd kill to have this colour in that case.

The cheapest one on eBay isn't that bad, but it's coming from China: taking your chances (on the shipping).
