I wouldn't necessarily say I've 'lost interest' in GT5 but I've certainly stopped paying much attention to all the hype surrounding it. I'm not a typical GT enthusiast. My PS3 (purchased in Nov 08) was the first dedicated gaming console I've owned in nearly 20 years and GT5 Prologue was the first GT game I've ever owned. My past experience with previous GT titles was limited to the occasional gaming night with friends who owned a PS2 or PS3.
I was quite enamored with Prologue's visuals and realistic physics engine. But not being a long term GT disciple soaked in franchise history and nostalgia, I wasn't willing to cut Prologue any slack for what it didn't have. And let's face it, as a stand alone game it is quite limiting in many ways and it left me wanting for more. As such, I really haven't spent much time with Prologue. Most of the time it sits on my shelf and I've preferred to keep myself occupied with Ferrari Challenge or Supercar Challenge or even at times, NFS: Shift or F1:CE (or even Dirt 2 or SSV8
). All of these do some things better than Prologue. None of them do everything better. And most of them, leave me wanting for more. I've held onto a vague hope that GT5 will give me most of what I'm looking for but as the days go by, I find myself less and less enthusiastic about it. Perhaps I'll feel differently when it's finally released. But there's a certain danger in allowing your expectations to build the game up to levels it can't hope to live up to. This is what happened with NFS:Shift. In fact, every time I play Shift I find myself getting angry because of what it could have potentially been, had it remained wholly a product and the vision of Slightly Mad Studios and EA hadn't put their hands on it. It's still a lot of fun to go a few laps around the ring and the game is a visual and audible feast. But ultimately, it's unrealistic handling model lets it down and it remains more or less an arcade game. Such a pity.
For the first 6 months after joining GTPlanet (and the year or so before when I was just a lurker), I searched through these forums every day for details and hints of a release date for GT5. For the last few months, I probably only look through the GT5 section once a week to ten days. I assume if there's a major announcement, it will appear on the main news page. And the discussions, while often interesting, just seem to go in circles most of the time.
When GT5 is FINALLY available, I intend to purchase it on the first day. And I'm sure I'll grow excited as the day approaches. But at this point, I'm probably no more or no less enthusiastic about Eutechnyx's new racing title(s) coming out in late 2010/early 2011. While I doubt they'll be as encompassing as GT5, as a developer, Eutechnyx actively seeks advise from it's fan base and I feel the FC/SCC community has really been able to take an active part in helping shape Eutechnyx's new titles. Indeed, many ideas from the Ferrari Challenge community found their way into Supercar Challenge. And it's ultimately quite satisfying to be able to play, even such a minor roll in it's development. Where as I feel very far removed from anything PD does.
