I tried an online race and used a Mclearan. It was hard to control and I just kept bouncing off the walls and spinning out. Ended up in last place.

Much Better at Time Trials than I am at online racing.
If I get out front I'm so afraid of getting punted that I'm too aggressive in the turns and lose it or I'm too afraid of punting someone so I end up never making a move to pass

I'm terrible at racing.. Hoping to get good enough to take it online without wrecking the rest of the field...

I've always been pretty fast with the controller, but since I recently got a Driving Force GT my driving is a lot smoother, and a little faster. I've been to the BMW (///M) Performance Driving School and the things I learned while driving an M3, M5, and M6 have helped me a ton with this game.

I'm great at racing, it's just the bit when I end up going backwards, in a huge cloud of smoke, off the track, over the barrier and ending up upside down against a tree, that causes me problems.

I'm pretty good, but I refuse to put slicks on street cars, so I never actually win. I should set up my own races, but no one shows up unless you set it to 900+HP and no weight or tyre restrictions. Sad that no one wants to race street cars on sport tyres.

No car is "easy" to control when you try to take a 20 mph corner at 90 mph.

I'm crap :trouble:

lol... just practise... use the racing line if your having trouble

Its not how good you are at racing but more about how good you can control and communicate with your car.

I lack car control but I communicate very well... mostly using four letter words :P

Based on my struggles in these Seasonal Races I have come to accept that I am in fact... pretty horrible. I have not show my worthless skills online yet, so far I've only raced my brother, who beats me using a DS3 when I have a DFP wheel. Oh the shame :(

No matter how fast you are, there is always someone faster than you...as paradoxical as that may sound. So I guess while I may be reasonably quick, there are many people out there who are much faster than me. :P

I'm not sure, I seem to do ok in events, I aim for silver in special events and licenses which i usually get pretty quickly, with a view to coming back one day for gold. I get gold with some anyway. I managed gold in the kubelwagen challenge fairly quickly, then went back to the sambabus challenge i'd struggled to get silver on and golded it almost immediately. But other events, such as some parts of the grand tour i could only bronze and have saved for later.

I also took quite a few attempts and tunings to gold the first seasonal event with the Fiats, but then golded the others (at least the first set from 20.12.10) really quickly.

However I use AT all the time, which I think many would see as a major disadvantage/easy ride. I also use skid recovery quite often, but no other aids (ok perhaps a little traction control when it helps)

So i'm actually quite reluctant to race online, unless I can find others who drive AT (can it be defined for races/rooms?). I tried the first seasonal time trial last night with the Kusabi, admittedly didn't play it for long but struggled to get under 1 minute and was something like 10,000th on the global leaderboard...not very encouraging!

Please do not do this. The racing line is will just teach you bad habbits. Start out with a low hp car (200-250 is usually safe) and just take it easy. Learn the track, and how to hold your speed through corners. Learn proper baking lines and techniques for different types of turns. Get a feel for how fast you can go, and push yourself faster and faster each time. Once you feel good with that, move up another 100hp or so.

My biggest tip to you OP is to treat the cars like babys at first. You may not be fast at first, but speed will eventually come with consistency and practice.

Remember, slow into the corner, fast out of it. Hit your apexs, and dont get back onto the throttle until you are sure you wont need to let off for the rest of the turn. You exit speed is far more important than your entrance speed.

Also try to run with the least amount of assists as possible. TCS will slow you down, along with ASM. SRF is just ridiculous, and will also teach you bad driving habbits. The only assist I run is ABS:1. If you can learn to control slower cars with no assists, and slowly work your way up, you will be able to drive that Mclearan with minor difficulties.

Also, dont forget to change your tires.

Thats my protip of the day. Hope it helps :sly:

I'm normally a bit nervous about joining online races.:nervous:

But after I've a had a few drinks I feel more confident.:sly:

But then I'm pants as I'm a bit drunk.:dunce:

I am excellent at online racing! It is the 'going fast' part where I fail. :dopey:

I love clean, close racing!!! I am not too aggressive and try to use tactics to pass someone. Read: I do not come up behind another car and try to pass ASAP as most so-called racers. yeah, these guys can do awesome fast hotlaps, but put them in a race with other humans and they stink! yeah, you guys know who you are! :yuck:

I find it safer to follow someone for at least one complete lap to study them and the course for good passing opportunities. Or if they make a mistake you can pass them at that time.
:)

It's not that. I'd slow down, and once I am passed the corner, I accelerate then my rear tires spin and I lose grip. Also it doesn't help that a pack of 8 cars just decided to use me and each other as cushion.

After viewing some saved online replays, I'm better than I originally thought, but that doesn't mean I go out and smoke everyone. I'm fairly quick, but not necessarily the fastest.

I had some amazing spin outs though. Wish the game would let you save online replays.

You save them from Race Results.

How good are you at racing?

Probably around the 90th percentile, meaning above around 90% but below about 10% of players.

I've played racing games for almost three decades, but of course until N64/PSX they were pretty crude and limited in number, but from N64/PSX onward have played dozens upon dozens and typically did really well in them. However, they've been more arcade-y until just the past few years in which I've started leaning more towards more simulation-y racers.

In games like DiRT I had several really high-ranking lap times on the leaderboards. In FM3 I typically ranked in easily the top 10% on leaderboards and had several top 1% and 2% lap records. That's not too shabby, I reckon.

Nice, thanks. :sly:👍

I will say i am decent, above average but far below the best, like a lot of the members here at GTP.

Advice i can give to a newbie, start off with the basics and don't try to be schumacher after 5mins.

Come to the corner, brake while easing off the throttle, then turn and hit your apex and when you can see the exit slowly and smoothly apply the throttle, try to keep the wheel as straight as you can in order to maximise traction.

I recommend learning to race with a low/mid powered FR car, a Mazda MX5 or Rx-7 would be perfect, as they are both fairly easy to drive, use sports tyres. Work your way up in power from there, perhaps by tuning the car.

If you can get these very basic principles nailed down, that you are braking in a straight line, you are accelerating in a straight line, you will find you suddenly have a lot more control over the car. Check out the video with Jackie Stewart coaching/teaching James May how to cut 20s off his laptime in a TVR around a circuit, its on youtube.

I can hold my own most of the time but far from the fastest. On Forza I had about a 60% win percentage online and about 90% podium finish. Have not dived deeply into tuning in GT5 yet mostly have only fooled around tuning on the ovals and a little on Nurburgring.
