I've been doing very well since GT4, and getting used to GT5 after a whole year of not playing a GT game (--unless Tourist Trophy counts, but that's a different story) has been tough. It's pretty hard to get really smooth control of the car without a wheel (using a DS3), and throttle modulation isn't easy either (which is why getting gold on Top Gear Challenge Intermediate has been a pain), but I'm getting back up to standard. When I gold all the license tests, I'll probably buy a DFGT and fet used to it then.

But for just racing, I'm a natural at not giving a crap about my driving line--there are times when you simply have to forsake it.

I'm pretty good in my own opinion and have race many people to test myself. I'm not the fastest but very consistent and know how to handle any given car the right way. When I first played GT1 I was pants. After years spend destroying PS2's with GT4 I've come to understand the methodoligy of racing and have a very non-aggressive, fluid driving style which helps me to be faster than some full-throttle aggressive drivers.

My skill level borders on the underwhelming. I think on a good day I could give a low level Bob a run for his money. I usually go for the sledgehammer to crack a nut approach when it comes to car upgrades, though I mist admit to trying to avoid the unremovable variety of late, as I don't really want two of absolutely everything (like to have a stock one to drive when the mood takes me).

A good advert for my skill (using the term loosely!) would be my attempt at that GT-R Trophy at the 'Ring. So far I have managed a 7:55!

Now seriously, I consider myself decent... What I can say about myself is that I put all of my effort in the race, even if I don't have the skill to match the opponents/track/conditions.

I'm great at setting very fast lap times. But I can't race to save my life. My overtaking skills are on par with a level 1 B-spec Bob. Seriously.

The only way I can reliably overtake is if the person in front crashes/spins. If not then it doesn't matter how slow he is I can't pass him. If I somehow make it to first then I'm gone.

I don't seem to have a problem with overtaking. In the CR-Z '10 Seasonal Race I even managed to avoid back ending too many cars as it tended to slow me down. Then, the CR-Z is not exactly what I would call rapid. Staying on the track in a fast car is my main issue, especially, if not mostly, at the 'Ring. If the road was about twice as wide there I would probably do a lot better,

I think my current nemesis is the FGT as I can provoke it to spin rather easily with a little too much pressure on the accellerator (I use a DS3). I won't even mention the X2010... I did about half a lap and thought it prudent to abandon the event until later... much, much later!

Just practice, try to find a group of friends who have a similar skill level to your own and set up your own lounge, use the same car and tyres as a group and you will have some close racing, as others have said already start with a slow car just to get used to the proximities of close racing (the guys I race with started with Mini's on Tsukuba) and work your way up to faster cars, as a group we have had some cracking races, most memorable for me was setting the cars to the Tom's Supra and the GT500 GTR from the recommended garage online and a 2 lap race on the Nurburgring at night. You will find that you have good days and bad days, not every one is a natural born race car driver, I know I'm not!!
Most of all just enjoy it.

I used to be fairly good but I've spent the last year or so timetrialling in WRS so I'm nowhere near were I used to be at the moment. Planning to start online racing again though to prepare for the official GTP race events that are bound to come in the near future

Quite simple realy, unless you know the track like the back of your hand then don't race it online, I only race online on tracks I've mastered and most of the time I either win or get on podium

Most of the fast cars are not a problem. I think my main problem is consistency.

I did get the Zonda R (on Racing Softs) round the Rome Circuit in around 1:03... once, the time I could keep it pointing in the right direction. I had done no adjustments to it so maybe there might be some slightly "tamer" settings for it.

The 908 (Racing Softs) on the other hand (with Stage 2 Turbo... as Stage 3 seems slightly superfluous) was much more manageable and I eventually managed a couple of consecutive sub 59 second laps at Rome (again... my not quite so boring money maker).

But to be serious, I have quite a bit of real life track experience that translates pretty well to sims. So I usually tend to be in the first third of the pack, without putting too much effort (fiddling with setups, doing dozends of practice laps etc) into it.

I have three basic rules, when it comes to online racing.

1: The race is not won in the first corner, but often lost. Meaning stay calm, and let the crashers crash and try to stay out of trouble.

2: Drive the car like you would actually had to pay for the damage you inflict on your car and other cars. This helps me to drive cleaner and smoother.

3: Try to find the "rythm" and try not to think to much. Everytime when I start to think about driving into a corner instead of just doing it I tend to mess it up. When you get in the butter zone (very concentrated, serious face, no thoughts, just driving) you are the fastest and the most consistent.

As someone mentioned above, there is allways, allways someone faster than you, so frustration is a big deal as well. The sooner you accept that you can´t win every race the better.

This is the most important things in most races online since the number of lap is usually pretty low start is really important and I cannot count the number of races I won by just letting other crashing into the first corner while I was taking a very clean and safe line into it and emerge 2nd or 1st. Even more when dmg is turn on.

I see myself as a pretty good driver, not the top of the list but a bit behind. I know most driving technique and when I do a same car races I'm usually pretty well placed. I know I'm a horrible tuner tho XD Trying to learn that atm.

I'm pretty good, but I refuse to put slicks on street cars, so I never actually win. I should set up my
own races, but no one shows up unless you set it to 900+HP and no weight or tyre restrictions. Sad that
no one wants to race street cars on sport tyres

Hi since i read someone elses post re: the bolded bit above, i've taken the same approach

slicks on race cars, sports tyres on sporty road cars and comfort tyres on the more mundane type of road car

seems like a better way to play 👍

It's best not to be complacent and to get real.

I estimate that the top 100-200 out of the 1-2 million that play GT are very good amateurs in real racing terms, with maybe around 20 having the ability to make it as a real paid professional. Look how well Lucas Ordinez did against the GT fraternity, but at this moment I'm not sure whether he has employment still. That's how hard a game racing really is.

My feeling is that GT would do well to get more frustrated racing drivers and karters involved.

Much Better at Time Trials than I am at online racing.
If I get out front I'm so afraid of getting punted that I'm too aggressive in the turns and lose it or I'm too afraid of punting someone so I end up never making a move to pass

I hate being in front by a few meters since I hate idiots who can't use their own brakes.
I do like to drive right behind a person if it's a good driver in front of me because I like slip streams and if the person is good it's easy to learn his driving style but if it's a noob in front you never know when he'll brake since he over brakes and brakes twice and sometimes even three times before the corner.

Punters, I hate them, there for I don't punt.

I tend to run faster times when up against cars that are faster than mine when compared to time trials, or even when my cars are faster than the competition.

It's not that. I'd slow down, and once I am passed the corner, I accelerate then my rear tires spin and I lose grip.

lmao i can barely win on intermediate difficulty, even though ive been playing gran turismo since i was 3 (10 years experience). i dont complain about not having enogh skill to win though. and ive recently been seeing lots of complaints about the mclaren from people who obviouslty arent driving it properly.

Unless you're with a bunch of folks you know, the only decent way to get good, even racing online is to do "Shuffle" races...

This is my first GT game so I'm a newcomer to it but I've picked it up easy enough, I have a Logitech DGFT its a good wheel, I use no driving aides except maybe the driving line on time trials(not for the line but just to get used to where to brake and where to lift off) I got all silver in the first Nurburgring challenge so thats not too bad for a newcomer to the series I think, I'm level 11 at the moment(got the game at christmas) have a DB9 and a Ford Mustang, the Mustang is trickier to drive, as it has a habit of sliding even with soft racing tires, the stability frame and slightly lowered suspension, it could be my bad driving too I guess but I manage ok, I found it difficult to complete the amateur classic supercar series with it but eventually got it finished, if anyone could give me nice tuning tips for the Mustang I'd greatly apreciate it, I'll post it in the tuning section.

I'm in the same boat, my racing used to be my strong suit. 10 laps easy without a wheel on the grass or mistakes after I got the wheel. But since I started concentrating more on WRS after the Academy, I can't really race for squat nowadays without a spin or an errant wheel on the grass every other lap.

GT5's new physics aren't the most forgiving either.

In terms of pace, I'm quick enough to get all golds in licenses and special events if I really try, but maybe not good enough to get in the top 100 of those leaderboards in the seasonal events. I think I'm a good racer too, especially after doing the overtaking license tests. I need to start racing online though.
