Yeah, BMW (M Sport) were given a brief in err.. very early '80's (?) to beat Ford 'at all costs'. So the 3.0CSL coupé was taken as an obvious base, tuned to 200bhp (alot for its day), made as many panels as they could out of aluminium, stipped the inside and made about 250 road versions (now going for more than £50,000 each). The race versions had wider tracks hence the fantastic wheel arches.

You probably know, but that is a very famous pic taken at Hochenheim during it's first season.

oops, it was the 3.0CS coupe - the 'L' was added standing for 'lightweight' (but in German) :)
 
I was a kid just getting into BTCC and these were racing. I got a couple for my Scalextric, I've still got 'em.... but that's another story! :D

Isn't it the old Nurburgring? Where could you get a touring car off the ground at Hockenheim?
