I'll have to wait 'til next year so I can find one a used one (hopefully UNDER 35k.)

Good luck. I could use a 911 turbo but you don't hear me complaining.

And there are several cars starting more than $5k less that I would much rather have.

Why don't you just but a new m3 in a few years for 10k more but used :)
I know theres a good price difference but also a good performance difference. Keep your eyes pealed for deals.

I'll be owning a lightly used example after I (hopefully) get my career going and can afford it. I still love '80s BMWs, but how can I resist a stunning E30-sized twin-turbo straight six beast that returns the same gas mileage as my 318i yet needs just half the time to get to 60mph?

I never thought I'd fall in love with a brand-new car.

I agree, they are ugly, expensive, small and impractical. Why not just get a 3 series instead? I honestly see no reason for the 1 series, at least in the American market. What does it even compete with?

My coworker and I were having this discussion today. The 135i is supposedly faster than an E46 M3, but seriously, I would take a used M3 over the 135i 100 times out of 100, and still have money left over. I'm still not sure how this car is supposed to fit in BMW's line. It's smaller and uglier than a 3-Series, and costs almost as much .

Yea they are pretty ugly, but fast. I would rather have an EVO X or STI tho. Maybe even a Benz C Class.

I'm not normally a big fan of Bimmers but the 1 series stands out for me. I am a huge fan of the car. I would actually consider buying one if 1. I was out of school, 2. if I had the money, and 3. I havent been planning on buying an S2000 when I get out of school

For the same money you could concieveably find yourself in an early Porsche 996 or a late 993.

Oh no, with the money it costs to buy a 1 series i'd spent it on an e28 instead. I'm just saying it's a BMW you get what you pay for.

And yet despite being smaller, the only advantage it will give you is the number of parking spaces it'll fit in, seeing that it weighs about the same.

But not a turbo. I wonder if the turbos will ever depreciate. *sigh*

But a 993 Carrera S2 will still do about 180 flat out, and has a flatter torque curve.
The acceleration is not as blinding as the turbo, but I figure anything that will get me to 100 Km/h in 6 seconds or less is just fine.

i love the styling. thats the first thing that attracted me to it. the performance is secondary. but...a well equipped 350z (which I was in the market for) will go for the base of the 135. as long as i dont car for leather and metallic paint (i dont) then i will have and equally priced car with better performance. and IMO better looks. but i can get a Z now for under 25k and i will probably have to wait quite a while to get a 135 for under 25. so really its a matter of how long i can stick with my current auto.

I like it. But please, BMW, squeeze the 3.5 into the hatchback too!

how much does it cost in UK and USA?

over here it costs let me see..

130i sport auto $66 300
135i Sport auto $74 200

335i Coupe 3.0lt TT auto $111 700
M3 $157 000

now you can almost call that equal to USD with the AUD being the best part of 91 cents. So take 10% off and you have USD prices..

How does it compare?

Actually Baron BMW here in Kansas City has 4 1-Series cars on the lot.
The most expensive is $43,325. And it's the only coupe of the four.
The other 3 are convertibles.

There's also a 3 series coupe with AWD on the lot that is cheaper than the most expensive 1 series.
By the same token there are three series coupes on the lot that are over 50 grand.

BMW 135i M Sport £29,755

For comparison
325i M Sport £31,490
Alfa Brera 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 28,995

That's just two quick ones. Not taking into account standard equipment and such.

Theres like a 100 350Zs for sale were im moving and they were all under $18k. cheapest was about $15,000ish with about 70k miles.
