I sold my Trans Am and got this...

800 ft lbs from 1800 to about 2200 rpm then it slopes down.

the power will come up and and peak at about 2000 and holds dead flat until fuel cut at over 3200 rpm.

horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.

Torque wins drag races; tires, brakes and suspension win all others.

I've heard a lot of claims about it, yet the fastest I've seen with the claimed mods was in the 15 second range. And they blow so much black smoke they look broken.
And it's got nothing to do with "can it haul ass" in any sense, the point is, if you want speed, a truck's the wrong way to go about it.
If you want a payload, or towing, a car's the wrong way to go about it.
If you want doors and a roof, a bike's the wrong way to go about it.

I could customize the Buick and install leaf spring suspension, beef up the frame, and if I really wanted, install truck bed instead of the trunk, and tow things, and fill up the bed, but why? I could just buy a truck.

You're missing the point. He just wants his truck faster, is that such a crime?? People try to make their civics faster, and this is probably faster than 80 percent of the civics out there

That old time statement is based off ignorance to what horsepower and torque are.
Torque makes horsepower. End of story. The more torque you have, the more potential for power you have, but as I showed, if it's at 2000 rpm, it's still not doing squat, even at 800 ft-lbs.

Torque wins drag races; tires, brakes and suspension win all others.
Wrong on all accounts. Torque makes horsepower, and suspension and tires, are possibly more important than power in drag racing. 800HP can run 9 flat. Can an 800+ HP CCX do that? Not without better tires and suspension.

No, because that's not the point. Making a truck faster is all fine and dandy.
What baffles me, is selling a Trans-Am, only to buy a truck and start a quest for more speed.
Sort of like if I sold my Buick for an Aveo and started "beefing it up". After a few grand, it just might hold even! 💡 - Doesn't make any sense.

That's it, that's all, it doesn't make any sense to sell a Trans-Am, and buy a truck if your going to then spend money to make the truck "fast". Not to mention if he really wants the truck Trans-Am fast, he's going to need different suspension, wheels and tires, all of which will take away from those bragging-rights-only payloads and towing capacity's.

The point is... none of the quest for performance actually makes any sense.

The joy of modding is taking something and making it do more than it was designed to. Whether it's a dinky Civic, a Trans Am or a diesel-powered truck. It never makes sense if you can buy something faster for less money. And unless you have a sportsbike, there's always something faster for less money.

When somebody asks me why I did what I did with my car instead of just slapping on a turbo, my answer is this: This is what I want, this is what I did.

Yes, it doesn't make any sense. I could have spent a hell of a lot less money buying a secondhand car and swapping an engine in, but I have a quick car that revs nicely, sounds good and hauls ass while giving me a comfortable cabin and a sunroof. It's what I want and the rest of the world can go sod off.

I suspect nitro's sentiments are the same. He could have something faster, but he's got a truck that hauls ass, can pull tree stumps out of the ground and can be used to move house in a pinch.

Torque doesn't make suspension or tires. People in factories do.

The CCX runs 9's in the quarter so I'm not really sure what your point is with that. A lot of it has to do with gearing though, the CCX geared for top speed, not going 400m. You could have the best tires and suspension in the world on it but without the gearing you aren't going anywhere.

My point still is torque and horsepower isn't as important in most forms of racing, the brakes, suspension and tires are. This is why something like a Lotus Elise can walk a Corvette all over a track.

you got it man. its not gonna be real fast but itll be brutally powerful and quick for what it is.

plus blowin thick nasty smoke all over priuses and smart cars is AWESOME!!!

The truck will be awesome, but I despise the idiots that think that black smoke is badass. All it is is unburnt fuel, it makes you look like a moron, and it gives the greenies another reason to not accept diesel technology.

some update pics when i cleaned her up real good.

All it needs is a black front bumper and it's set!

don't forget to black that out, too. are you gonna do a Deer Catcher?

im doin a tube steel front bumper. rectangular 2"x5" 1/4" thick wall steel tubing.

recovery d-rings and hooks

I wanna do something like that to my truck, please post pictures up for me when you're done!

yeah, i gotta rebuild my oil cooler then get my axle shafts back in so i can finally have 4x4 back after the dana 60 swap.

then im doin guages and the rest of my exaust. bumper will be around the time I do my 3-4" reverse shackle lift

update. i bought a toolbox. im converting about half of it into a cooler and the rest will be to hold my straps chains and other recovery gear.

i am builiding my custom 5" side dump exhaust right now. all i need is a couple feet of straight pipe and its time to test fit it.

while thats getting powdercoated i am doing my side steps done in the same 30% gloss black. ill post pics when i have the exhaust mocked up.

If I went through this thread only looking at the pictures I could tell you how much nonsense that statement is.

He didn't sell a Trans Am and buy a truck so he could make it go as fast as a Trans Am. If he wanted to do that, he could have spent a lot less money and chosen a far more suitable vehicle. However, that wasn't his point: He sold the Trans Am and bought a truck so he could do truck things. He didn't have to spend a bunch of money on the truck to make it faster, no, but when he already owns the truck why shouldn't he?

For that matter, your initial statement:
Trucks always = "It'd be a hell of a lot faster if it was a car"
Take a look at how slow the RAM SRT-10 trucks are, compared to Vipers.
Isn't even really that accurate.

Nice truck you've there :) But I like the wheels on the first picture better, It's my opinion :)

Actually the "wheels" in the first picture are just wheel covers. Judging by them only having 7 "lug nuts", they are the cheap Pep Boys units. Personally I prefer the look of the black deep dish.

Oh sorry, a friend of mine has a ranger with wheels like this covers hehe, so I thought, thise was too..

yeah i hated those wheel covers i popped them off soon after i bought the truck. looked like an old farm truck with the nose down and ugly steel wheels and skinny tires. its come a long way....and its only the beginning. this truck is gonna be built to RUN

You guys are REALLY making me want to do an F150 Prerunner/Bigfoot Tribute...

That is one nice F-truck, I've gotta say.

haha thanks man. i love it too. the powerband is so brutal it feels like a 2 stroke dirt bike. you stuff it it starts makin noise then SPOOL UP....and its runnin. yeah so i am doin my exhaust, custom bedliner over the fender lips and EGT gauge are going in within the next month

Dude, your truck is awesome! 👍

I'm looking for one myself, although I think I'll go for a Chevy.

Aside from the steel wheels you just described my truck :scared:

Mine'll be as nice on road as yours is off!

Boooooooo!

That being said, I've heard absolutely nothing bad about Duramax diesels (and nothing good either, so middle ground?)

their injectors are common wear points on the earlier motors. you would have to replace then every 80,000 miles or so.....at a couple grand per set made by bosch

Are they high pressure injectors? That's common for most high pressure systems.... but an 80,000 mile lifespan would be down completely to the quality of your local fuel.

Densos wear out even faster.

yeah the duramax run a commo0nrail injection system with a CP3 pump. extremly high pressures. i belive between 20k to 30k psi.

i know my INJECTION pressure is up pretty high but my high pressure oil system get up to maybe 3000 psi
and i shimmed out my fuel pressure regualtor to have more fuel pressure. i should be aroun 70-80 psi goin to the injectors

Ah. Explains it, then. High pressure systems are more prone to damage from water contamination and poor fuel quality. Until they improve fuel quality, or find a way to install a water separator in-tank, there will always be issues with these systems in the long run.

makes you think the guys that designed the systems in the first place are still thinking in the fifties "one guy can fix everything himself with duct tape" era. nowadays, most of us just RUN the vehicle, and leave all the repairs and maintenence to pros who do it right the first time :P

found a sweet quarry today. i shoulda took a vid of the ruts i climbed up through. the truck did great. 2.72:1 low range, 5.71:1 granny gear and 4.10 axles.....unbelivable crawler LOL
