I've been reading about and practicing "racecraft" for years, but you can never stop learning! I'm the type of driver that gets my "jollies" from being smooth and proper and I don't feel like I have to set the fastest lap or be 1st every time. I can spend hours practicing my braking points, entry/exit points and trying different lines through turns. I can tell that iRacing is beyond a simple "game" and people take it very seriously so I would never want to jeopardize somebody's race or standings by getting in the way.

I'll probably spend a lot of time on the tracks by myself to start, really get a feel for the car and learn how it reacts under different situations. Once I really start to feel comfortable with the car and the physics I will jump into some Practice rooms so I can start using those skills with other drivers around me. Only after lots of practice in those 2 scenarios will I be ready to enter a series and start competing.

I'm really looking forward to it and I know I will truly enjoy every aspect of it. Thanks again for your advice and help, I'm sure I'll be a regular to this thread now and will probably have some more questions. I always try to find the answers on my own first, but there seems to be a whole lot to iRacing so if I can't figure something out on my own I'll ask around in here first. I'll join the official iRacing forums too, but GTP has kind of become a "home" to me and I will still be here for my GT5 leagues so I probably won't jump onto their forums until I feel like I'm accustomed to their system.

Sounds like text book stuff in my opinion, i´m sure your way out of Rookie class will go very fast indeed.

3 things that are good two know, 2 things i feel are mandatory but it´s up to you.

1. You can use TAB and race against your the best time you have set on the track, race against your optimal lap (your best sectors combined) or race against individual sectors only. I´m sure you know this one though but just in case.

2. F3 - knowing where you are in real time compared to you competitors.
It´s a great tool if your planning on doing multiclass racing in the future or just getting lapped by an alien, his name will be red, and if you lap someone they are blue i think. Think you know this one aswell but anyway.

3. Spotter, when in session go to Options/Other/and turn on spotter.
Crucial for 1 screen drivers but i use 3 and still find it very useful.
This way you know if the guy trying to overtake you has put his front wheel next to your rear wheel etc.
And the other way around, he tells you when it´s clear so you can "claim" the line again.

I did not know any of those things. I haven't had time to look at the key commands or anything yet and I didn't know any of those things existed. Those are exactly the things I'm wanting to learn about, as opposed to finding out the hard way. :) Most of my reference will be to GT5 as that's the only place I've ever done online racing, so I'm sure there will be lots of options/functions that I'm not even aware would exist.

That's exactly why I'm going to really take my time and ease into things before I join any official competitions. I know I have a lot to learn and want to get a really good foundation before I start getting really serious. I plan on spending quite a bit of time in the Rookie class too, trying out all the different cars/series before I progress to the next level. I know a lot of people just want to get to the fast cars, but I kinda want to experience everything there is. :)

I just noticed that a little bit ago. I know Laguna really well but had never driven on Okayama until last night. Looks like I've got lots of practicing to do! 👍

I haven't driven Laguna at all! I guess I just abussed that track so much in GT4 that post all love for it...
Absolutely loving Okiyama short and Limerock!

The track change really knocked me around, looks like ill be practicing by myself a little as I get to know the track better.

It seems that an F1 league is to far ahead here.

Maybe we could start up a MX-5 league with the fixed setup? That way no SR is counted, you learn the car on other tracks and we can have some fun riding balls to the wall together? :)

Just short tracks like Lime Rock, Okayama short etc.
But the best track for MX-5 in terms of racing is SPA. 2-wide in all corners is something to behold ;)

I'm in about the same boat as StigsHero right now, except I haven't signed up yet. I have a GT2 + CSP + Shifer on order, and it should arrive in June, so all things going well I should be signed up by this time next month.

I'm really excited to try this, I've wanted to since I heard about iRacing a few years ago, but I haven't had the cash to buy a wheel till now. I've been playing sims with a gamepad since GT3, but I finally just said **** it and bought the wheel. Hopefully the learning curve isn't too steep, I've been driving real cars for years :sly:

I've been reading through this thread, and it seems like there's some serious practicing to do once I get on. Anyone have any tips for a rookie?

If you guys do that I'd love to spectate and maybe particiapte in your practices. I think that'd be a great way for me to get some good iRacing education with people who understand I'm still learning the in's and out's. I wouldn't get involved in the races yet though, I don't want to interfere with your racing until I'm more accustomed to everything.

Don't get me wrong, I'm making myself sound like a total noob but I'm only new to iRacing and PC sim racing. I've been using FFB wheels on the Playstation for almost a decade and have spent countless hours reading about performance driving, studying videos and trying to apply all that in the games and in the real world. I try to drive in the game like I would in a real race car and like I'm friends with everyone on the track (don't want to piss off your friends!). But I've never experienced anything like iRacing and I'd love to learn it the right way from others with experience instead of fumbling my way through and possibly interfering with other drivers races.

Sorry that I've kinda hi-jacked your thread today, but you've all been very helpful and it's appreciated. 👍

I am definitely up for a MX-5 league!! The F1 is still to far from my skill level at the moment... Have had some real great racing so far, but unfourtunately too many bad incidents, so far I have gotten cought up on some one elses mistakes! People just go off and on with no regard of the other cars on track! Dive bombing banzai moves... Some mad guys out there, but anuways I'm loving the experience!

+1 to all of this.
I would also love to spectate/practice with this series, but I doubt I'll be ready to participate in the races by the time you guys are getting ready to go. I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I get into any real races. Who knows, I might not even have my wheel yet by the time you want to be starting this.

Quick question: Should I sign up now so that I can start spectating and getting a feel for the game in general (obviously not the physics/driving) before my wheel gets here, or should I just wait and do it when the wheel shows up?

I decided to sign up first. I have exact same package as you coming in. GT2,CSP,Shifters and already got my ten sport stand and shifter adapter. Of course delivery is in June sometime so in the meantime I signed up and am using a wired 360 controller to get the feel of the game. Tweak the gfx, get to know the menu system etc

Finally! An almost clean race! Got taken out twice! Was on the lead for the first 7 or 8 laps with a good fight going on till I went in wide to turn 1, the second place car went trough clean we gave each other enough room and I conceded the position, then out of nowhere this crazy woman thought there was an openning on the apex right as I was turning in and wrecked both of us. Luckally I had no major damage and was able to carry on in 2nd place, she retired. 11 laps in I'm in second and this guy is FAST! His coming fast but I manage to hold him off trough turn 1, second attempt this time arround he gets past me under braking but goes wide, so I take the inside and am ahead he turns into me we bang doors and get out of it with no damage or going off, next lap he's out for blood! This guy just wants to wreck me plain and simple, on the run to turn 1 he simply turns into me and turns me arround ON THE STRAIGHT!! Once again I escape with minor damage and was able to finish the race on 2nd place 47 seconds behind the leader. My iRating is now at 2.37 but it sld be way over that if it wasn't for this nut cases!

If you see intentional wrecking then protest him. we don't need guys or girls like that :)

FYI, your SR is 2.37, irating you can't see at the moment.

Think of SR as a timeline. all your incident are recorded on that timeline.
the timeline is a number of corners (can't remember how many) and the thing is to do as many corners as possible with no incs.

irating is also in some way saying how safe you are because your irating determines how good you do in races and to do good you must stay on track.
good irating means you end up in the higher split = better racers = better racing for all.

About the MX-5 league, just hit me up when you feel you are ready to race and we can start sketching on a mini league that will provide some close, hard and honest racing :)

Ok guys, I'm making an entry for the paint 7 contest and I would like to ask if there is anyone out there that can help me with getting in-game shots. The rules state I have to have the TGA file as well as up to three unaltered JPGs of the car. Contest ends may 25th.

3.0 on monday or tuesday, 4.0 instantly

Ugh, I finally got my PC up & running again (mobo died, got a replacement sent & that doesnt like my PCI wireless card so had to get a USB one)
Log into iRacing & Nvidia is back on lime rock.. I was wanting to try Okayama..
Meh, Guess I'll just be safely going round LR until I get 3.0/4.0SR so I can try some Class D stuff.
Also whats this I read about GTP doing a little MX5 racing together? I'd love that!
Is there like a GTP iRacers list? Like there is with PSN & XBL?

Yea i was thinking about doing something along those lines, it´s a very easy car to drive, it´s a very equal car to drive so you really can´t blame the setup :P and it produces probably the best close racing you can find in iracing. It´s more accessible anyway.

We have been nagging on iRacing to produce a spec series for the MX-5 but obviously they want to make money so they bundled it with the Jetta (which is for sale btw if anyone wants it :))

Having spec series with either the Cup or Roadster would be very fun i think. I will probably not take it very seriously in terms of chasing tenths or so, i´m there for the racing ;)

I´ll see if i can get the mods to make another "above" this one so it´s still in the iracing thread/category but not in this thread.

Btw, what car are you painting?

I just read this and i don´t know much about the competition at all so i thought i´ll let you know if it affects you in any way.

I definitely wanna get in that league!
Sign me up!
Question! How do I friend you guys in iRacing?

I could give it shot if you're willing to talk.
