I've been reading about and practicing "racecraft" for years, but you can never stop learning! I'm the type of driver that gets my "jollies" from being smooth and proper and I don't feel like I have to set the fastest lap or be 1st every time. I can spend hours practicing my braking points, entry/exit points and trying different lines through turns. I can tell that iRacing is beyond a simple "game" and people take it very seriously so I would never want to jeopardize somebody's race or standings by getting in the way.
I'll probably spend a lot of time on the tracks by myself to start, really get a feel for the car and learn how it reacts under different situations. Once I really start to feel comfortable with the car and the physics I will jump into some Practice rooms so I can start using those skills with other drivers around me. Only after lots of practice in those 2 scenarios will I be ready to enter a series and start competing.
I'm really looking forward to it and I know I will truly enjoy every aspect of it. Thanks again for your advice and help, I'm sure I'll be a regular to this thread now and will probably have some more questions. I always try to find the answers on my own first, but there seems to be a whole lot to iRacing so if I can't figure something out on my own I'll ask around in here first. I'll join the official iRacing forums too, but GTP has kind of become a "home" to me and I will still be here for my GT5 leagues so I probably won't jump onto their forums until I feel like I'm accustomed to their system.
