I have a queation....how long is the qualifying session?

I'm still fairly new to PC sims and have been playing GTR:E. Went into a couple servers where the qualifying session was 30 minutes while the actual race was only 3 laps! Sooo boring. Qualifying sessions should be 10 max IMHO. Otherwise it just becomes big boring hot-lapping fest.

if it's D class, that means you have to be a rookie with a safety rating over 4.0, i think. That should be easy to do.

I wonder if iRacing will upgrade their engine to DX 11 or 10 maybe in the future... its kinda lame how the only smoke you see is from your own car. if someone else does a burnout or locks up their tires. you see nothing. no smoke clouds or dust :/
Just finished my first race and went down .07 points to a 2.54 rating.:ouch:
I like this setup it really is pushing me to be a better driver but I got tangled up at the start line in an accident that really messed up my SR.

sometimes crashes are unavoidable. try to avoid hitting the side of cars, because that can give you 4x incidence points. Also, try and get familiar with the track before racing online.

even at the start of races. I sort of brace myself to swerve right or left, just incase the driver in front of me is asleep at the wheel and misses the green light.

Qualifying sessions are sometimes extremely short. for road, they are around 10-20 minutes. For oval, you have 4 laps to try and set a good time. but you can leave whenever you want after you set you time. You can qualify on monday and race any time that week, and your qualifying lap will position you accordingly. You can also race without qualifying if you havent done any qualifying that week. Times and frequency of races and qualifying vary from series to series.

for the skip barber, there are races every 2 hours and qualifying every Hour. You can do time trials any time you want. time trials are basically you trying to put together 4 hotlaps in a row without getting any incidences/off tracks.

I think I'm finally getting to grips with the Solstice. In two laps of qualifying I managed to knock over three seconds off my PB getting it down to a 1.53.8xx, then decided to try my third race of the week trying to get those last few SR points before promotions.

Getting ready for the start I decide to take a peek at the staring grid. Is there a mistake? Thats my name sitting on pole, maybe there is someone else with my name? Nope, first race after getting a hang on the car and track I'm sitting on pole, and lead every lap.

I won my first race, sitting on pole, having never finished on the lead lap.

And I still need .13 SR to get my promotion.

2 questions:
Is there a free trial version?
And, can you drive with a controller or is it wheel only?

And dont tell me i "need a wheel for real simulations", "thats not a game", "lulz controlah lulz".

EDIT: Oh ive just read above there is a 1 month trial, so theres 1 question left.^^

i think some people play play with xbox 360 controller. I would recommend using a wheel since the tracks are very nicely detailed.

there are some people who use a controller but they have a few problems with them because they are not dual axis or something. but iracing does say a wheel is necessary for play so i wouldnt expect to get much support for the controller from them.

but i cant wait for the jetta to be released. ill be C Class next season but ill be driving that trying to get a chance at getting into the real one. sure i dont stand a chance against the aliens but its worth a try right.

Well it would be cool if someone of you could ask a pad driver if accelerating with right stick and steering with left stick works, im handicapped and cant drive with a wheel, but would love to have the iRacing experience at least for 1 month (more would be too expensive for me anyway).

I recently gave up on iRacing having subscribed for the first full year of it's release. The detail of the circuits and the FFB are 2nd to none but it just wasn't worth the subscription charge plus paying for new content on top of that. Also, it has virtually zero "pick up and play" potential for me because if you're focussing on a single discipline (road or oval) you will often need to wait over an hour before you can join a proper race. It's the best sim out there right now in terms of accuracy and driving experience but the sheer amount of time and money you need to invest before you get something back was too much for me. GT5P on the other hand has been taking up a lot of my time recently but not very much money at all (yay for no monthly fees!) since I bought a PS3 :)

Sorry to say it G.T.Ace, but I think you'd have a hard time playing iRacing with a dual analog gamepad. I never tried myself but had a few pals on iRacing that tried to play with an Xbox 360 controller or joysticks and none of them ever really got on the pace until they started using a wheel.

I'll give it a shot hopefully tonight for you, the servers are down for maintenance ATM.

LoL, i just resubscribed for another year, and i just grabbed the Lotus, road atlanta, and preordered the TDi Cup car :). i'll probably upload a vid of me trying it out once i finish downloading it.

me @ silverstone. I'll try to upload a clip of me doing a proper lap, but i have to learn some video editing stuff 1st too. I wanted to combine 2 clips somehow.

The solstice has ABS now, so braking is much easier :). It would be nice if GT5 had somethign like this, so people can appreciate ABS more by experiencing cars that don't have it.

That would be really nice from you, thanks in advance. :)
Ok here it goes;
It works with a Xbox 360 Controller!

It does not, however work any where near remotely good. the game is just too sensitive for the jerky inputs given by the controller, also the gas and brake have to be mapped to the right stick.

In other good news,
I've heard some wheels have analog paddle shifters, which means you could map the gas/brake to the paddles, some are better than others at giving a progressive input. I am trying my hardest to find the thread on NoGrip about these wheels.

NICE 👍

Would love to have a go at the Lotus, but unfortunately the way the game is structured (race lengt/time), not for me right now :(

Thanks for trying it out, i might download the trial then. 👍

The thing with the wheel wouldnt work, i have Spinal Muscular Atrophy, i dont have the strenght to hold and move a wheel.
Thanks for the tip though. :)

Oh, well not knowing how much you can or can't hold I would suggest you check out the Microsoft Racing Wheel. On the computer it does not have and Force Feedback so it is quite easy to turn, if you can mount it to the desk then you really should have no problems, only if the wheel is too high and your arms get tired of being so high.

If there is anything else I can do for you let me know, I've been there before (handicapped at least) so I'm willing to help in any way I can. 👍

Nah, wheels are seriously impossible for me, unfortunately.
Your help is much appreciated! :)👍

Where do i get the trial from btw? Cant find it on the site.

Ahhh too bad, i thought theres a official 1 month trial, but this Radical thing would also be cool. Thanks for the link, i need some time for it though, will make some backups before i install iRacing (had a lot of bad luck with PC games in the past).

PR-RADICAL-ONE-MONTH

Radical One month with Silverstone track.

Thanks for the code man 👍

Wish I would have seen it last night though :indiff:
I signed up for a one month subscription.
I searched this thread, the forum and google for discount/coupon codes for
iRacing-with no luck. None of them worked :irked:

But, after playing this game some the last couple of days, I am very, very impressed. As everyone has pretty much said, best physics in a racing sim that I have ever played. And I've also tried rFactor and GTR Evolution, which both have really good physics IMO.

I need to get a better graphics card though. My EVGA GeForce 9400 ain't cuttin' it :( especially in iRacing. This week was actually the first time I've ever tried a PC racing sim, and man, I'm glad I did. I didn't know what I was missing. The physics in rFactor, GTR + iRacing (especially iRacing) are so much better than GT5P that it's not even close

Its the tyre model that wins it, nothing (apart from perhaps nkpro) comes close to the feel. Whilst i love gt5p and have been playing the gt series since the original playstation game, theres virtually no sense of grip/edge of grip-slip angle/sliding transition in gt, and high performance driving/race driving is all about living in the slip angle (not sliding) part of the tyres performance.

I was wondering if Alex or anyone here was good at making setups? I would like some help in understanding suspension tuning. I can grab a setup from a fast guy and get pretty fast, but I would like some greater understanding. I've been looking around at e-books and websites for info on tuning.

I'm good at Forza tuning, lol but have no experience with iRacing since I can still only race Rookie cars. 👍
I assume that the principles are the saem, given that they work in GTR, Race07, GT5P, Forza 2 so on and so forth.

I'm gonna play around with the advanced solstice and see how i can affect the way the car handles/performs @ Road Atlanta short. I think i got into the 1'14's with the stock setup. I wanna try and get into the 1'13's before i start playing around with the suspension.
