Does/did anyone run in the GT challenge series? I am sort of interested in the Ford GT and was wondering how participation is for a US/West coast guy? Also, with a proper setup can the understeer be minimized?

I haven't run this season but last season the FGT participation was really low and there was almost always a 2:1 ratio corvette:FGT. and setup wise it's actually kinda twitchy and loose, especially Suzuka because there those shallow turns that require the car to be loose, the FGT forum has a bunch of great setups, I tend to go for Niek's (spelling?) setups. Understeer is only a major problem if you overshoot the corner entry like I have a tendency to do.

Thanks. Let me say that I've just run a full season in the SRF - so that is my standard. I've noticed the "snap" of the FGT, but in general it understeers with the "newbie" setup I found in the forum. I'll check out the setups you mentioned though. Too bad to hear about the participation. Do the vette drivers run it over regularly?

From my experience the GT series is some of the cleanest racing Ive had in iracing. The 2 cars in my opinion do very well on the track together. The Ford is fast enough that there isnt to much worry about getting run over. It still is about 2 to 1 like was said though, but the racing is fun and competitive.

I'd say the vette drivers are actually pretty courteous the majority of the time, they are slow enough to give you time to react if you watch your F3 Relative box, yet fast enough to complete the pass fairly quickly.
There's a thread somewhere in it's forum that has about 2-6 setups per track in the season 2 schedule, I haven't checked for well over a month now

How is the racing in the SRF, I've done some testing in it but I haven't done an official race in a long time

fatkrakr thanks for the info. Appreciated.

I think it is great - both the car and the series. I had tried the SRF previous to the S3 update and I just could not handle it at all. However, I really wanted to like it, so when I heard that it had changed I gave it a go and ended up running the entire series.

The SRF is slow, unstable momentum car, so drivers handle it carefully and pass with care. I would even call it gentlemanly. Mistakes are certainly made - it is a D class series. But it is well participated so you can get a race 7 days a week pretty much anytime.

I can't think of anything bad to say about it. :)

I am looking for some advice while planning for Season 4:

I always try to make sure, that I can race as much as possible with buying less as possible extra content. In Season 3 I will run Oval Class D and Road Class C. And here is my dilemma.

I woul like to take part at the ISR Special Event "The Rock". So if I buy the Chevrolet National Impala and Rockingham, I would be able to participate in 3 weeks out of 12 of Season 4 and the ISR-event.

But if I buy the Chevy Monte Carlo SS, I could race 5 weeks out of 12 without buying any extra track.

Can you guys give me some pro's and con's for each series? I personally like the idea of having fixed setups with the National Impala...

So let's move to road racing:

Here again I like the idea of fixed setups, and only the Indy Car provides this. Since I own only Laguna Seca, the Star Mazda Series would be the only one, where I own a single track. For all other series I have to purchase at least one track.

Can you share some experience with the C-Class Road-Racing series (IndyCar Series, GT Challenge, Radical Challenge, V8 Supercars Series, Star Mazda, Grand Am, GP Legends *new*)? I am leaning towards the Indy Car at the moment.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thank you very much. 👍

EDIT: I have 100$ iRacing credits to spend, so buying a bundle of 3 or 6 pieces of content would make sense to get a discount.

If you have $100 iRacing credit I don't really see the problem.. in Oval you buy those 2 cars and that 1 track and you have your first "3 bundle"

In road it really isn't as simple as we giving you tips as every car you mention drive totally differently and even if I like the Riley and the next guy like the Radical doesn't mean you will ever be comfortable in any of those. I don't really race ovals and it's most likely the same there, but I wouldn't know as I have no experience.

But I can say that in the Grand Am it's really a nice mature crowd driving it and the racing is very clean. Of course you have a few people all over the place that think they are gods and can drive like they want. But you don't really see them often in Grand Am.

Problem in Grand Am is to find races. But if you can race on Sundays you will be able to find a race. If you want to race more often you have to depend on a bit luck or you will have to drive in the middle of the night.

But if you chose GT challenge you could race in two series. GT challenge and Prototype & GT challenge. If you want most out of your money I really think this is the place to race. But we all heard horror stories from the prototype & gt challenge so it might be you give it up and it could be money spent and less racing. I do believe the GT Challenge alone is pretty decent so it wont be a total loss ;)

Same goes if you buy the Mustang, you can race in Mustang Challenge and the Grand Am.

But it comes down to what you like to drive. I really wouldn't put my money on something anyone else say on a forum. I have to like the car I'm driving and I try to make the most out of that car to be competitive and have the best fun.

I hope you find a series you like.

Thank you Erik!

A "Test drive" option for every car would be nice in iRacing :)

I woud like to focus on only one series per season, that's why I am not sure which of the Oval-cars I should take. Also I don't necessarily want to spend all the credits at once.

To choose a Road-racing car which can be used in more than one series is a good advice. :) What I can say right now is, that I don't like the feel of the Cadillac without changing anything with the setup. You pointed it out very well, my aim is to get the most value out of my credits!

I am not sure if I should go the open-wheel way, or the GT/Prototype way...

Also my aim is to plan the schedule in a way, that I have only one series in one week. I want to cencentrate on one thing per week. But this only affects the tracks I buy, and not so much the series I choose.

I will say based on oval side I honestly do not like the impala 2009, but I haven't touched it in season 3 so might handle better. It just wasn't easy or fun to drive for me but I'm planning same ISC event too.

My favorite classes to run are trucks, impala COT but I'm not used to class A cup car yet.

One seasons I never see many talk about is V8 supercars on road side and I wonder why?

Well I was going to do Petit Le Mans, guess not now. :( Have to be to work at 11pm (race is it at 5am here) and won't be off soon enough to race.

Jav
Hey look who's back!! Congratz on Suzuka! Well done dude! The MP4 will be coming out mid season, so I guess mid December.

Thanks! I have been quite busy the past two weeks or so. Between Suzuka FIA weekend then flying back to America for a special Karting event. Sitting in Detroit right now waiting for my return to Tokyo.

Does anyone know when qualifying ends for the Petit Le Mans event? Hopefully I get back home in time to do some practice and qualifying for the event. I'll be running in the HPD at Road Atlanta. The down force is so much fun at that track.

Mahnegold, you might want to check on participation levels for the series you are considering. It wont help if the schedule works for you, but you can't get a race at that time.

For example the Radical - awesome car that it is, is very hard for me to get an official race. If you wanted to run that, you'd have to find out when the regular Radical drivers run and make sure you are available that day and time for the most part. It didn't work for me, so I was essential unable to run the series.

Looking back two or three pages, I just want to say, thanks!!

I just got back up to SR 2.40, after a single *decent* race.

I started from the pits, and my shifter fell off. I couldn't shift down, and had a little mistake/spin. But, after that, I got it on track, stormed about for a few laps, found a really fast rhythm, and got my lap back from someone else. Then, I guess this person was a little angry, and decided to retire, having been passed by a guy who was down a lap, from the pit lane speeding penalty, and other effects as a result of the flying shifters.

But, your advice really helped, guys!

Because it's only popular with Australians mostly.

Almost got my C Class oval license, just need one more race to complete the MPR. I did three races with the Street Stock at Charlotte on Monday but now it changed to USA so I prefer to practice a bit more so I don't lose much SR or iRating. Overall it's been pretty fun doing longer races with yellow flags, although the Street Stock doesn't require pit stops for refuel or tire change so it's just four laps of boring. But hey, at least I could answer the phone while racing.

Also, I'm pretty happy this week as an iRacing friend of mine decided to give me his old G25 wheel. He said the leather on the wheel is a bit wasted at some parts, and the clutch and brake pedals oscillate a bit at mid-course but other than that it's in great condition. He even sent it with the Nixim mod already installed. If I can fix the pedals I think this will be a great upgrade for me from the MOMO wheel I currently own.

It's already in the post office but he lives across the country and express delivery was way too expensive so it will probably arrive next week only.

That is a good input. I was assuming (maybe a bit naive) that I can have a race every two hours (or whatever the schedule says). In rookie and D-Class it never happended to me, that a race don't take place because of no participants. Thanks for the heads-up! 👍

Skip-Barber and Star Mazda have good participation, races pretty much always go official. Dallara fixed not so much but it's not too hard to get an official race as well, the open series is harder.

You'll be fine! Quali runs trough the whole week and something like 2-3 hours after...

The Mustang challenge and GT Challenge always have pretty large fields.

Just had my first race after a two month hiatus, which somehow turned out to be my best result to date. :boggled:

iRacing - Race Result, on Flickr

3rd, 4th, and 5th (me) on the grid went three wide through the first two corners, and 1st to 4th were within 2.2 seconds of each other for over half the race. Pretty stellar driving all around I would say. 👍

Lol! Had a great time running with him for a couple of laps, till a careless rookie in a Corvette came ot of the pits without looking at the F3 box...
I'm currently 83rd behind the world record in the Ford and 243 in the Vettem but I just love that beast so I'll stick with it and run the Ford next season!

There hasn't been any updates in the past month or two for the GT has there? I just want to make sure all my setups are up to date.

Is there any news on wk 13 races? I'd like to see another late model road course series, that was a blast. I just hope I can make a few races, I haven't done a race since mid august, so I know my SR is going to take a plummet based on my occasional testing it just depends how much. I tend to use a little more track than was given sometimes

No news yet on W13!
--------------------------
Damn! Just threw away a 1:15.9xx on qualy! Kind of glad I did because there's no way I'll be able to mantain that pace trough the whole race!

Was leading after a few laps, after starting in the pits...

"I could get used to iRacing. It gives me a fair chance to beat people. :sly: Oh, hang on, the shifter feels loose... What?!!? Where's my shift lever!? What? :dunce: It's on the floor? :scared: " - me

P.S., my name's Andrew Geier. Also, the other guys on the podium, except third place, who fell off of the pace, we all had a great race. I really freaked out when the shifter fell. Was such a great race. :(

Putting that one down to "mechanical failure"?

Well, when you can no longer shift, or even make it around a corner due to the pure confusion, and pull into the pits (thank you, magic tow truck) to further attach more rubber, (and at some point maybe duct tape and glue ) it's hard to finish the race. The fact that I got fifth, though, with only two "incidents," in the same corner, says a lot.
