I originally considered doing the Mustang Challenge, since I already have the car and four of the twelve tracks. If I were to buy four of the other tracks, I could compete in eight of the twelve events for $54.

However, the season concludes at the end of January. I've figured out that I should be able to race in a mixture of Class D events up to the end of the season without buying anything. If I'm lucky, I could get promoted to Class C without having to spend a single cent. (For what it's worth, I'm still a rookie but rookie promotions are tomorrow.)

Looks like I picked a good time to sign up :)

Check the attendance for the Mustang series before you commit to buying tracks. I was thinking of doing the Mustang at Montreal last season until I noticed that none of the races at my time slot were going official. That's one thing that I like about the skippy series; it always goes official when I race. The other thing that I like about the skippy is that it is a blast to drive on NTMv5.

If you live in America, the afternoon races always go official. Other than that, they don't often go official, but overall attendance is up from last season

Had a race in the RUF after I bought it tonight at Spa, an old friend showed up in the race he started up front and I was mid pack. We started with 9 cars finished with 3 but I was in 2nd since lap 3. He spun several times and I spun once with a few close calls with half a lap to go he spun and I passed him and I told him "If I win this, it'll be sad" we battled for the last half a lap and he took me with 3 turns left so I made a sprint to make it up in the chicane but I had to brake earlier for being on the inside and he took the win. I must say though you have to really be wary on the tight banked turns like T1 and the chicane because you may flip which definitely makes it interesting.

I've been promoted to Class D :)

However, the only Class D series available at the moment (without buying more cars/tracks) is the Grand Touring Cup, which isn't terribly popular. That said, I could always go back to the Mazda Cup or maybe try oval racing.

Once Christmas comes, I'll probably be spending most of my time on GT6 anyway.

Ok, I have a question here.

So if I purchase say a group of 6 items at 20% off, can I then enter this promo code to make that a total of 45% off?
You have to buy the credits 1st. Then make your purchase and the 20% discount will show in your cart.

So, you're saying "yes"? :p I purchase credits at 25% off, then when I buy 6 or more things an additional 20% comes off the price?

More like 40% total discount. You are getting 20% off six pieces of content, but then paying for it with credits discounted by 25%. The effects aren't additive mathematically. For instance, suppose you buy six road course tracks for (rounding up just to make the example easier) $90. At 20% off that's a cost of $72. If you pay for that with credits that were at a 25% discount, you end up effectively paying $54 for those tracks. That is a 40% total discount off the original $90 cost.

The way I understand it is you have to put down $20-74.99 and you receive $5, or if you put down $75+ you receive $25 on an account recharge then make your purchase at 20% off the cart out of $100 total dollars (on the $75 deal)

Anyone do the Grand Touring Cup? I think I'd like to stick with the MX-5 Cup since I do like that car and I've spent a lot of time to get good with it. GTC has a lot of great tracks, but I'm not sure about the participation level.

What you can do is select the GTC click results and look at race results from your typical timeframe to see participation level

I started to complete a season of GTC and didn't have time to complete. It was good racing multi-class, but IMO the Solstice & MX-5 are too close to each other where people were fighting for positions between car classes when they shouldn't. I raced as the Solstice just for a change of pace from the MX-5.

What Roush said about checking the results is your best bet. There are many series I'd like to run. (Grand-Am, Star Mazda, V8SC), but the times when I race I don't see many official races.

However I'll probably still do Skippy next season and depending on what they do with the RUF might race some there.

Skippy is the next logical step after the MX5 Cup, at least if you want guaranteed populated sessions at most times of day.

Remember, there's no shame in running the MX5 Cup. That's some of the best racing in iRacing. Lots of top drivers racing in that series just for the fun and change of pace.

iRacing got mentioned in Eurogamers alternative awards for 2013:

Unlikeliest Source of Great Game Design: iRacing's safety ratings. This hardcore motorsport simulator has a clever progression system that's not based on wins or grinding but reliable, incident-free racing over time. It penalises anyone involved in a crash, spin or sortie off the racetrack without apportioning blame. It's intended to create an online environment of skilful, respectful racing, and it does, but it also raises the moment-to-moment stakes so far that my first steps in iRacing became the most tense and exciting gaming experience of the year for me. It goes such a long way towards simulating the threat and fear of real motorsport. In my first online practice session, I got so freaked out by a faster car coming up behind me that I span out all on my own. Terrifying, thrilling stuff.

Anyone running the SimVibe software? Is it worth the money? I picked up 4 Aura Bass Shaker Pros and the Parts Express 4x100w amp for Christmas. My Asus DX soundcard should be here today. Nothing left to do but to pull the trigger I guess, but $90 just seems like a lot of cash for the software. I kept hoping for a deal to show up over the holidays. Heck, even $10 off to get it back to the price it was 6 months ago would've made me feel a little better! I haven't really heard of anyone who's been disappointed with it, though.

Side note: I sprung for the DX because I wanted a card that supports Dolby Digital Live to feed my Turtle Beach DSS2 processor to make my headset surround sound (or as close as you can get with headphones, I guess). I'll be using my on-board sound to feed SimVibe.

Welcome!
A good way to go is either the 3 items or 5 items discount. 5 items should (depending on the schedule) put you in the position to be able to do 8 weeks in the Skippy, which will give you $4 in iRacing credits. If you're lucky you may even be able to do 8 in the SRF, depending on how similar the schedules are.

Bit of a late reply, but :-

The Spec Racer Ford (SRF), which is a free car, has a beginner friendly schedule where you only need to buy three tracks to compete in a "full" season of 8 races. They plan so that they either repeat a track (on a different config) or have 5 free tracks. So a rookie should be able to do a season for around $30. They also limit how many tracks change each season, to reduce the ongoing spend.

And the SRF, on the NTMv5 is a hoot :) Like the skippy, it is a car which will teach you good habits, which help down the line.

Yeah, I was on my phone at the time so I wasn't able to check.

While the SRF is easier to drive on NTMv5, I don't like it near as much. Its so boring now, it used to be one of the few cars you could slide around corners. Too easy to drive as well, you hardly need to practice before racing anymore it's so easy. Used to be my favourite car, but now I'll be moving on.

Anybody know if the RUF will be added to the Grand Am Series as a competitor in the same class as the McLaren. Only reason I'd purchase the RUF is for that reason.

I think the eventual plan is to make the Ruf the sole GT car in the grand am series.

Any idea on what they will do with the McLaren then?

McLaren will be going to it's own GT-3 class against the RT12R-Track, the C-Spec will be the GT-D car.
