I'll be honest, I regret choosing to buy a PS3 for GT5 rather than buying an Xbox 360 for Forza 3.
GT5 just isn't as good an all rounder.
The grind is ridiculous. This is coming from someone that played Asian MMO's, I can handle massive grind, it just doesn't work or have any place in a driving game. The fact that it's a completely artificial time sink designed to halt your progress makes it even worse. It's completely avoidable, it doesn't need to exist within the game, levels ultimately have no bearing on anything, they don't represent skill or ability, they solely represent whoever sat there grinding away the longest.
Little things niggle me about GT5 and I just can't get over them.
The lack of a back up option on the save is ridiculous, considering you may be spending several hundred hours to get anywhere near completing the game. How they can justify preventing you from backing it up is beyond me and it shows a complete lack of common sense.
The way that the paints are all one use only and you may have to play for ten hours just to get more than one of a specific colour. To add salt into the wound, you can't preview what that colour will look like at all, which means your first use of the paint better be perfect as it's gone forever the moment you try it out. This is beyond ludicrous and does nothing other than punish the player for no good reason. It's terrible game design and really needs changing in a patch.
Wheel customisation is also severely lacking in this game. No longer can you choose from an array of different manufacturers, you now have to endure yet another artificial and unnecessary limitation which sees you stuck with a pre-selected group of wheels per car. You can't change wheel sizes, the weight of the wheels have no effect on the car and you have to use yet another of your precious and severely limited paints to paint the wheels (without a preview of course). Finally, as we have all talked about already, no wheel changes on standard cars whatsoever.
Yes Polyphony, rare paints and colour combinations on cars IS cool, it is fun and rewarding to have a car customised in a unique way in which others don't. However, if you want to have something like that in your game, go and copy Forza's livery system, let us have full customisation of our cars and give us unique paints which we can earn and add into our colour palette for the livery editor.
It's like they want to give us customisation and enjoy rare cars, but in the most restrictive and backwards way possible. Yes, you can customise cars, but only the handful we say you can and only in the exact ways we specify. If you want to have your wheels the same colour as your bright orange bodywork then you better get grinding and hope you find that paint again (unless you can buy the 'paint' (car) from the dealerships/used car market).
The online aspects of the game are also severely incomplete and lacking in real quality, but at least PD seem to be patching and working on that.
These aren't all the problems with the game, but they really bother me and certainly make the game far worse than it should be.
Halve the XP per level requirement, double the money earned (some events need a far larger increase), increase the duration cars remain in the used car market, let us at least test the paints before we use them up, let us back up our crucial and important saves and give us an awesome online world with which to play in.
Do those things and you might just save this game PD.
