Mostly true but not if the thing you hit is at head height; there's no crash structure in front of the driver in that case. That's what I think happened here, certainly it's what happened with Maria de Villota. I guess in a side impact you have some of the airbox/housing to share the side impact.

Depends on how much space is underneath the tractor. With the high nose, I'd wager it'd hit the undercarriage first and absorb some of the impact. The sidepod is narrow enough that it can slide under without hitting anything, in which case Jules (and the rollhoop) will get the brunt of it.

This is assuming the crane is built as I think it's built... but since he flattened the tire... hopefully the tires were facing him and some other part of the chassis took the brunt of the hit.

We'll know eventually... but not for a while, I'd wager.

It's now questionable why the safety car didn't deploy earlier.
Indeed... very surprised it took so long to be deployed.

Sure it sounds better than "he passed away", but the fact that he is unconscious means he must have hit his head on the tow truck and that would be really bad.

Exactly, not to mention that they might have to put him into coma because of his (possible) head trauma.

It cant have been at full speed as there were under Yellows at that part of the track...
It could, Maldonado said that the flags were only being shown at the outside part of that curve and he could not see them until he was passing through the curve.

Questionable but the lap times were still reasonable at the time. I mean Hamilton will still doing 54s which is what he was doing mid way through the race. This incident is just unfortunate with the circumstances and I hope Bianchi is able to recover.

US TV was in commercial for the entire duration of the incident so didn't get to see that yellows were out or not.

Safety car deployed after Bianchi crash and that spot is some high speed place to crash into!
More so during the rain!
This may be a hot topic on some days to come.

I have to say, whilst the airbox looks in OK-ish shape, there doesn't appear to be much of the cockpit on the left side.

Still rather uncomforting news that Bianchi is unconscious. This is everyone's concern right now. We might see Alexander Rossi replace him temporarily, or worse, permanently for the season.

I really have a feeling that this crash could also mean that we'll be seeing close cabin formula 1 cars in the very near future as I think this might've "prevented" the crash, at least the severity of it.

An immediate safety car following Sutil's initial accident would have probably prevented it too.

Last time we hear of a driver crashing into a truck it wasn't good news. I hope Jules will be ok and racing in Russia next week. We don't want another case like Villota or worse.

I'm with Massa. The race should have endend or stoped 3 or 4 laps earlier.

I place ALL of the blame for anything that happens to Bianchi SQUARELY on the race promoters.

I understand that they didn't want to move the race up in case fans couldn't get there in time, but chances are Bianchi would be fine right now if this race had been held at noon, or earlier.

Bianchi would be fine if he decided not to be a race driver through his teens. Bianchi would be fine if a butterfly flapped it's wings a second earlier a few months ago. Bianchi would be fine if the tractor wasn't there. To place the entirety of the blame on the race promoters for not making the race earlier is a ridiculous concept when there are so many other factors at play.

Seriously, with the conditions how they are, no matter what point in the race it is, the safety car needed to come out after the sutil crash

Car was destroyed, I doubt Marussia would be able to have it ready for Sochi.

Of course, that isn't important right now. Really hope Bianchi is going to be okay, his drive at Monaco this year was the most excited I've ever been over an F1 race. Seriously good driver, seriously bad situation.

I am crossing my fingers but I have to admit I fear the worst when I wake up in a few hours. Everything that has happened after the incident points in a bad direction. :nervous:

Pretty good race, but I'm not getting happy about anything until I hear news that Bianchi is OK.

I'm confused. Don't they have to stop a race immediately when the conditions are too bad for the medical helicopter to fly?
And that's part of the problem with the incident.

I hope this shows the FIA that they need to start taking safety cars and safety decisions seriously. For far too long now, we've had Whiting throwing yellows when SC's are clearly the only option. Marshal's and driver's lives have been put in danger several times in the past couple of years.

Sutil just gave an interview on German television, but didn't wanted to say anything to the crash.
But his reaction wasn't a good sign.

Stupid that they changed the finishing order.
The way it normally works is positions when red flag is shown, not a few laps before.

Bianchi's car moved into FIA garage..

I seriously despise Kai Ebel. Sutil says "I don't want to talk about it." and yet he keeps asking, is he Ebel deaf or something?

Hopefully when I wake up in a few hours the news is good. Don't often get to chat in these race forums because of my time zone, was good sharing it with you guys.

The reporters are certainly being not very tactful. The drivers don't want to talk about their race, so just leave it.
