Kart Racing - Most frustrating races in GT6?

nursemorph, I appreciate you posting the video, but your AI is SIGNIFICANTLY slower than mine. I can get into 8th by turn 3 on the first lap and can make no gains from there. If anything, they are leaving me behind. At lap 6 is the inevitable slowdown, but even then it's only for one lap. I was literally slamming into people the one time I got to second and STILL finished 1.5 seconds behind the leader. It's just not happening. I'm done before I throw a controller through the TV. 1 freaking star from all stars completed. Thanks Obama!

Let's try this again.

I have uploaded the replay of my win with Shifter@GT Arena to show it is possible to win with a DS3 and x/o buttons as accel/brake. It is not one for the purists as it is quite ragged and messy but it was effective. I have got the video to as best a quality as I can manage (make sure it is playing in 720p HD otherwise it becomes difficult to see....also, it may take a little while to stream fully as the file was quite large).

Settings:

Ballast: 13KG +50 (rear)
Top Speed: 86MPH
Controller sensitivity: 3

I stayed in 8th for about 5 laps. Patience.

They do tend to pull away for quite a few laps but you have to be patient and just concentrate on the track rather than your position/times. As for my AI being slower, I have no idea....I would imagine that the AI are programmed to do certain lap times so it should be consistent game to game..but I have no idea. If you are getting lap times the same as mine, then maybe that is the case.

The first time I completed the race in any other position than last, I was over 4.5 seconds behind the leader, then I slowly improved to getting second place about 1.5 seconds behind, then got it down to 0.7 seconds, back up to 1.5, down to 0.25, a few times at 0.7 and then finally got the win. It requires practice, patience and good throttle control....I struggled no end until I figured that tapping the x button (accelerate) after the corner exit got me straighter quicker.

Honestly, on 2 occasions, I vowed never to try it again as I thought it was impossible (and on one occasion almost stopped playing GT6 altogether out of frustration) but, i you feel you really can't do it, then I sympathise with you. One final bit of advice is this: Don't keep trying over and over again in one go....have 3 or 4 attempts and, if you haven't won, then go and play a different event or something else entirely.....the more you attempt in a row, the more the frustration and the more likely a mistake will happen.
 
Well, I've golded everything else in the game, & gotten all stars, except for one more star in the Arena Kart race! I've tried all the recommended settings and the best I get is Second place! This is totally ridiculous! At least in GT5 & previous version, pd's emphasis was on racing cars. I've spent more time on this kart race than any other race!
 
i really liked the kart races, they were actually challenging compared to the majority of the races. Once i got my throttle control down and used the sound of the tires to know when the front or rear was near breaking away i found them to be pretty easy.

Yeah I'd say this is the thing. I basically just try to take positions as quickly, cleanly and smoothly as possible (i.e. no waiting around for the right time to make a move), and any time I get clear running I just worry about setting fast and clean laps. You start worrying about your split to the leader or the fact that you haven't seen anyone in front of you for a couple of laps or whatever, you might start to drive like a bit of an idiot, trying to make up time taking corners faster than your kart (or your skill level) can keep up with.

If you're slamming into people to make overtakes... well, you're probably sticking the overtake coz basically you've rammed them, both of you have your revs drop through the floor, and then you're the one who gets out in front. But every time you do that, the guys out in front who aren't ramming into things are getting away.

And if you still can't win? Well I'd suggest just running a time trial and hammering out laps until you've improved your karting. You could also try a long arcade kart race. Long so that the "end of race slow down" effect won't interrupt your efforts to work on improving your overtaking.

I got gold on all the kart races first time using a DS3 (sensitivity 7). No need whatsoever for tuning it. Just be smooth and you can win with ease. Honestly...

I'm having trouble getting gold with the DS3 on the last 125 Shifter race, the Gran Turismo Arena. I got gold on the first two races easily, but the best I could do at Gran Turismo Arena was silver.

I'm afraid I'll need to use my G25 wheel for that race. :crazy:
 
Big thanks to @nursemorph for this replay, I have it on my console and though I haven't got Gold yet, it definitely opened my eyes to a new strategy for attacking Gt Arena with these twitchy shifters!!!

You're welcome...glad it's helping you. And, yeah, if you are struggling, it is worth considering new strategies....for me, as seen in the replay, was tapping the accelerator button (x) to get the kart to turn quicker...that and using the AI Karts to help me corner :D

Yeah, the first 2 races are pretty easy as long ass the AI doesn't punt you off.....mainly because the longer corners etc allow a less precise way of driving and doesn't hugely punish you if you make a mistake (the first time I did the Brands Hatch one, I got run into the side hoardings in the run up to the hairpin on lap 1, was about 4 seconds off last place yet still won the race! The only other time I've been grateful for rubber-banding!) whereas the GT Arena has little margin for error and requires a lot of concentration.

Using the wheel for that one would be better (though I have to repeat bongoplyr's question: Why use a DS3 if you have a wheel? Beyond the challenge of it?) but it is possible with the DS3 (see my replay earlier in the thread) with a fair amount of practice

I actually sold a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel because the first one broke so I returned it, and I could see the second one meeting the same fate. The plastic clamps used to attach it to the coffee table were no match for my aggresive driving style... I always ended up with the wheel in my lap, it would just come right off the table... Even tried rubber pads to buffer the hard plastic clamps to no avail...
 
I've always enjoyed the karting in GT5 and so far in GT6 more than the rest of the racing because it is usually a closer race. Looking forward to some of the 125 races when I get that far into GT6. Not everyone has to to be good at each type of racing in GT as they don't all require the same skills but looking at your style and what is going wrong in the races often makes you a better driver as you overcome the causes of the failure.
 
Not frustrating, boring. I really don't like to listen to a weedwhacker bounce off a rev limiter for 90% of every lap with my foot to the floor. Then you brake a little too hard or light for a corner, get spun by the AI or go off track, and you lose.

I've given up on all of them out of boredom, I think I golded the first one first try, and couldn't take strolling around the course at full throttle any more.

My wheel is currently hooked up to my PC. I mainly use my PS3 in the living room and there's no place to mount the wheel.

I was just too lazy to unplug the PS3 and bring it up to my room.
 
Kart races to most are considered frustrating because they require some of the most precise input from the driver. I know my input on the throttle and steering made all the difference during the Shifter Kart Championship in IA. You can't just drive it like it's a car, much like I was once doing.

That has been my mantra for days now "Try again tomorrow". That and "I'm not getting mad, i'm not getting mad, i'm not...".

Congrats on legitimately earning that trophy btw. My friend just drove around Daytona at top speed for three laps- so boring.

I found that limiting myself to 3 or 4 attempts at a time made it a lot better as, any longer than that and I'd get frustrated and get worse and less likely to manage it.

Are they high or low 27s? You should be aiming for low 27s, even high 26s and hoping the AI don't hold you up too much

Had another shot this morning, again mid 27's with odd 26. I am not getting frustrated with myself more the stupid sheep AI. Lost count how many times they have caused me to spin out or just plain get in my way.

May have a look on you tube see if i can pick up some tips, sometimes seeing someone else do it helps.

Not sure if i shud mess with settings. At the moment all i have done is notch the gearing down a bit.

If you look earlier in the thread, I posted a video of my replay to show how it could with done with a DS3 and x/o buttons...not easy but doable. I would suggest putting the gearing at 86mph...any lower and it gets a bit unmanageable. Time-wise you are pretty much there (if you watch the replay, you can see the times needed), just getting round the AI..don't be afraid to use them as a cornering aid if needed (though there is the risk of spinning!). Hope you get it

Edit: Here's the replay again (make sure to change the viewing settings to 720p HD or it might be difficult to watch)...save you searching..hope it helps. My settings were:

I too am having no joy with the harder kart races. Total frustration with a DFGT and not a lot easier without! That and Nascar are proving really difficult for me.
 
For the longest time i couldn't beat the second race in the A Class 100 cart series then i took a deep breath and relaxed my hands and jus raced and i won once u get in first place it is easy to stay the course and keep the position

You should check out the Xlerator wheel stands for use on a living room couch/easy chair. I used the XL4 when i had a DFGT and recently bought the XL21 now that I'm using a Fanatec setup. They are super stable and very comfortable even for a very tall person like myself.
 
You can give the shifter kart a little power boost by doing an engine refresh (not oil change, that isn't available) - costs 3k, and only gets you an extra 2bhp (goes from 49 to 51) but it might help. I finally won the GT Arena race after doing it, whether it made the difference or it was just practice I'm not sure.

Edit Also should have said, thanks for the suggestions on setup, I had given up on the shifter karts until I read this thread. 10kg/+50 and adjusting the gears for the tracks did me nicely for the first 2 races, just added the power for the third after getting frustrated with being 2nd by 0.3s for about 10 races in a row....

Well, having previously only done the 125s, I decided last night to finally have a shot at the 125 shifter. Went to have a practice around the Brands Hatch layout to a feel for it and maybe an idea of how to set the transmission... nope. Couldn't run the shifter around there, or the Willow track. Ended up running around Monaco for a bunch of laps, which I found to be quite a bit of fun. Bit of a shame they didn't use it as one of the tracks in the championship, although in an arcade race around there I did find it rather easy. I reckon it'd make for some pretty good online racing though.

That said, DS3 users aside coz I dunno how the hell you guys can drive with that, I couldn't really see what the big deal is. I just set the top speed for I think 200km/h at the first two, and then 130km/h for GT Arena (just guesses, but they seemed to work out ok). At Willow I was in 3rd coming out of turn two on the first lap. They all pretty much parked it on the outside going into the corner, so I just bashed it down the inside and slotted in cleanly in 3rd. :lol:

No ballast involved, just a bit of free practice around Monaco and some transmission guesses. The main thing was just getting used to the throttle use for corners. Did have a few near misses around the GT Arena, but nothing a bit of quick countersteering couldn't fix.
