Yes, driving clean is THEE most important part. Driving quick is obviously important too, but scraping for a few extra 10ths at the risk of putting yourself into the wall isn't worth it.

We will definitely keep some tracks and rotate out others. I'll make another survey as the season comes to an end and let people vote for tracks. I'd much prefer Daytona Road course over Monza but it was nice for a change. I may also toss in a generated track. I am very familiar with just about every track in the game at this point. I can run them all at the limit except maybe le Sarthe.

I know most people support the current rewards system, but I'm really on the fence about it.

I'd be in favor of a weight based penalty system similar to whats used in FIA GT1 and a similar points system. I'm not sure how much ballast GT5 allows you to add so that could be a difficulty.

Heres how it works in FIA GT1. Our cars are much slower than GT1s so we could use less weight.

  1. +30kg
  2. +20kg
  3. +10kg
  4. +5kg
  5. 0kg
  6. -5kg
  7. -10kg
  8. -20kg
  9. -30kg

To keep the speed of the cars progressing we could have a central PP mandated for each race. Each car would start with the median amount of ballast added that GT5 allows and then be tuned to that PP level. After hitting that PP level you would add or remove ballat based on your position in the previous race. Of course, ballast would be added centrally to negate any possible advantage.

Just an idea.

I also support the "at least a decade old" rule (2002 was a decade ago WTF!?) and a slightly higher starting PP. I think a problem we have this season is that a good number of cars in the starting PP range don't allow for forced induction.

Addition regarding non PP based upgrades:

We could mandate Sports Fixed or Height Adjustable suspension and the 5 or 6 speed Close Ratio Gearbox (drivers choice, can be changed per race). Gearbox homolgation would even out the racing. Stock gear ratios in this game tend to make or break a car, and in a series like this where power matters a lot it's hard to justify spending the 6k, 8k, or 20k on a gearbox upgrade that may not have instant effects on performance. We could also mandate OR prohibit Drivetrain upgrades.

I know not everyone would be up for such drastic rule changes, but I think it retains the core of the series (old cheap cars for not-quite-serious racers) and would improve racing.

What I'm wondering is: my car did fantastic at Monza. That was all my car, not me. So I don't win anything going into Trial Mountain. Trail Mountain doesn't favor my car (though, it isn't as anti my car as Monaco). The cars that placed poorly at Monza get the biggest cash bonus going into a race that favors their car. Now, honestly, last night was much closer than we've had all season, but I'm wondering if there is a way we can lay out the mix of speed and cornering tracks so more of them are closer as the season goes along.

You described my strategy perfectly. :sly: I too am unsure why Trial, Suzuka and Cote are all back to back, but I'm ever so grateful. Monza was the race to finish conservatively. (Although getting last on Wed was not the plan, but once I was around 8th in the car that could get 4-5, I decided to have fun with Lumberjack otherwise I'd have been bored like last night.

I don't think the 200kg of ballast allowed would compensate for most driver's inabilities and some car's inadequacies. It works out to be around maybe 10-15 pp but it really screws with stock suspensions moreso than changing tires.

A strickly PP based system would allow drivers to install suspension and drivetrain parts that could give tuners a huge advantage beyond what the pp system offers. It ruins the aspect of running stock beaters with minor upgrades.

I'm doing 'OK' with my 280z on Wednesday night without a turbo. I know i'll place poorly at le Sarthe but that's fine. You get better gains dumping 20k into smaller mods than a turbo anyway. I was worried about running out of things to purchase but I still have weight reduction mods and the final engine stage. It will be interesting to see how an all-motor car finishes in the series, and that's why I picked it.

Oddly enough, I think it is easier to avoid a wreck at Monza than the Daytona road course. I hate the Daytona road course. It is just so hard to judge distance on a 2D screen, and that is the one track that will destroy you if you get it wrong.

Sleight, those aren't horrible ideas. It reminds me of one: +1 or 2 points for actually finishing the race. +1 point for sitting the pole.

I assume you are referring to the critical turn 1. I've mentioned the secret to this turn numerous times. Don't run the top of the track entering it. Stay down low near the yellow line. There are plenty of visual cues down low and its the line the racers run in real life. Every time i see someone try to come in wide they run out of track and end up in the wall. The bus stop is obviously difficult too but if you use the shift indicator you'll hit your mark every time. If you haven't discovered the joys of timing brake zones with the shift indicator, you'll never run consistent laps.

i thought it would be cool to add +1 point for leading a lap. However i'm not volunteering to watch 1.5hrs of racing to verify who lead a lap before their pit stop.

Instead of Monza, why not do an Oval? Daytona, or Indy? It's not like La Sarthe, yes its about speed, but still. It's very different.

For the slower cars, Daytona or Indy would be 1 lap of attempting to draft followed by 1.5hrs of driving in circles, alone. No thanks.

I like tracks that balance straight line speed with cornering precision. It balances fast drivers in slow cars with slow drivers in fast cars.

Well, last season, I didn't wreck in the turn one wall or entering the bus stop. I wrecked leaving the bus stop. :( I also hit Grenade as he rolled down into traffic in his cloud of smoke, but that wasn't my fault.

Still, I just hate those two corners.

I would vote for Monza in rain. :)

The point in mentioning I sandbagged??? I said out loud during the race and after in the lounge that was my plan and intention. I needed 9th or worse. I had to stop on the track, yes, only becuase I gained a position when the person in 8th was disconnected. I developed a basic plan and its working very very well. I dont see the point in calling out people with a strategy. If ball players knew they could strikeout inthe first inning to have a better chance at a homerun when it counts you think they'd try for singles first time up?

I also dont understand bringing up Bowtiekid. He's missed a race and has only garnered 26K in credits. No one whose made every race has made less save for Huyler and his cushion is comfortable at the moment.

I want to see how it pans out for you. I'm still not convinced it is the right strategy for winning the championship...but if it is, I will likely adjust the winnings and points spreads to promote battling tooth and nail every race, not just strategic races. That's all. Stick to your strategy and we shall see what happens.

Oh, we shall. ;)

Car is shared Garris.

Who said my plan was for me to win...

Oh hello there Mr. Tickles!

Some of you may not understand the following, but hopefully you're able to respect it. I play GT5 for pure entertainment value because it is a video GAME. The point of games, if I remember, is too have fun. I get a lot more enjoyment out of this particular game when the outcome doesnt involve me winning than when I have to sweat out enduros trying to reach that goal.

Yeah, I understand that...which is what this series is about. Balancing driver ability with car performance to put everyone in roughly the same spot on the track week after week...with some real-world strategy in selecting parts, tuning, and pit strategy...to make every race interesting. Any other series would put the same drivers out front every race. I like the challenge of battling different people each week.

The length of the race is primarily to open up the pit strategy. i'd love to run shorter races but PD didn't design tires to wear properly. Last night was my first 2 pitstop race in the series...but i think that is more a factor of performance and track than it is tire wear. I think sport mediums would have worn just as quickly on trial mountain...or they would have produce lap times too slow to make a 1 pit strategy work.

As the sun sets on Mt Akina, Takumi carefully places a cup of water under his helmut and a tray of Tofu on his lap. Positioning himself for the evening ahead he climbs into his go kart and the journey begins.

Earlier in the evening, Bunta saddened Tak by hiding the keys to the 86 under the flower pot on the front porch. From now on, he says, you'll be learning in the PDI racing kart now place this cup under your helmut and get to it. I'm going to comb your hair when I get home. If I can get through it, I'll know a drop was spilled and you'll spend the rest of the evening waxing my Impreza while I tell you how much you're letting me down.

More of this epic saga to come as Tak encounters his first adventure in the rain and Bunta rolls up in the fastest BMX bike the city has ever seen. Is this truly the ghost of Akina?

Not as hard as the final segment, I was mostly pacing myself ahead of Pyxen, cruising when I needed too, and going fast when best suited me. I almost broke 1.37 last night, and my tires finally gave in, and I started getting slower, and slower, and slower.

Also, next week. I know we're in the rain, but must we START on Hard's or can we start on Rain tires? Also, is TC allowed? Or are Rain Tires allowed at all?

LOL....not sure if I should feel good, or not :) I thought our racing @ the start was pretty competitive! :P

I never got to race with diabolic, btk, or pyxen last night. :(

I spent so much time behind Geezer and Sl3ight at the beginning I have no idea if i could have kept up. Then I passed everyone by pitting on lap 18. I was scratching my head when BTK was talking about pitting at lap 25. No way I could have made it that long. After 15 laps I was stretching my tires real thin. Did anyone make it on just one pit stop?

The Saga Continues:

On the return trip after his Tofu delivery, Tak decides to entertain himself with some PDI Go Kart Drifitng. Some spectators from the upcoming race that night watched Tak as him and his Pink Kart take Akina's downhill with storm! Mere inches from the guardrail, as he feather's the throttle, the same technique his father taught him in the 86. Corner after corner, with the cup of water merely swaying around, not spilling a drop. Until suddenly! A single headlight! Who could this be, catching me this fast? The headlight gets closer. It's Bunta!!! His feet pedaling, faster than anyone had pedaled before! Takami swings out, and tries too Apex the corner, but Bunta comes out of no where! Tak has but a second too look over and see that Bunta is SLIDING HIS BIKE! USING NOTHING BUT HIS KNEES TOO STEER, HE LIGHTS A CIGARETTE!!!. Tak pulls off the side of the road, takes his helmet off, and drinks the glass of water.... To be Continued.

Yes, I could've made it 25, but Diabolic's tires gave in, and in fear of losing him, decided too pit. This put us right back together.

First 20 minutes of the race, mostly from my POV.

Huyler..thanks for including some of BTK, Diabolic, and Me.. that was hella fun while it lasted.

You guys are cute. ;)

I could only manage a 3 stop strategy. Tires were basically toast after 8 laps, regardless of driving style. More confirmation that FWD sucks, but I still like the car.

(note if your not a loser manga reader: you have to read it right to left)

I guess I chose FWD because I'm like Takahashi.

I chose FWD because Garris wouldn't let me use an MR2 or Talon :D

The Talon is FF.

I went with that because I did AWD last season and I didn't trust myself with a FR. There is no way I can handle a MR.

I chose the MG, because it was the best.

LOL you're right...talon is FF. I still wanted to use it. ;)

Not sure yet, but I'm thinking this will be about 35ish laps. I just tested, and after an hour, I was finally able to do more than one lap at a time. I did mostly 2:30s, but I did get a 2:28.3, all in the dry on RHs. By the sixth lap, though, my front tires were at 50%.

I'm going to do so poorly this week.
