Suzuka and Le Mans
One of the key aims of the series was to emphasise the Le Mans/endurance theme, not necessarily through sheer number of laps but through elements such as time settings and circuit selection.
Each half of the season is essentially self-contained in order to maintain equality of car performance with regard to the mid-season car change. The races are designed to become tougher as the season progresses - an example being the first half whereby the racing ended with the tricky Laguna Seca and then at Spa, the location of many classic 24 hour races.
As we end the second half of the season, the final two races are at Suzuka (latest 2014 format) and then Le Mans. Suzuka is recognised as a difficult track while Le Mans will be raced in a 24 hour format for the double-points finale.
In order to allow good time for preparation the format for Le Mans will be as follows:
- Race 1 - daytime sprint (20 mins)
2009 no-chicanes format
Cars will be racing flat out all of the way down the Mulsanne straight recreating Group C history
- Race 2 - 24 hour endurance (60 mins)
2009 chicanes format
Race will begin M3 pacecar at night
The formation lap will also act as season end celebration
A night-day-night pattern will be followed overall
