Anything's possible if you can weld.
I've been following the (very very slow) progress of a guy putting a Northstar V8 into a first gen Toyota MR2 for a year or so.
Probably any flat engine would be tricky to get into something as small as an Elise, but I don't doubt it would be possible with sufficient skill, cash, dedication, money, time, and finances.

Looking at what Esthi did with the Elise, you're right; anything fits.

The Elise's chassis is spectacular. You're looking at disturbing the most perfect balance almost-ever. I'd never tune it to more than 220hp, and I'm sure Colin would agree.
