I see your point, but I think the line has to be drawn for vehicles like this. When I bought GT4 I was enthusiastic about trying the Benz and Daimler vehicles, but the novelty wore off within 5 minutes and I never touched them again. I feel that vehicles with such limited utility like the Lunar Rovers will be the same for the vast majority of people playing the game. I think it is best to agree to disagree on this issue.
I agree to a degree. But I think cars like this serve as a beacon: this is the kind of game this is, adjust your expectations accordingly.
You have to realise that PD have at the same time catered to those asking for GT3 cars, which is more traditional sim territory (which is currently heavily en vogue, for some weird reason; I'm going with Amar's "Real Deal Joes", personally) - quite how that's implemented in the game we don't know, and I wouldn't expect too much. It's not a race-day sim, but sandbox elements may help us to bend it that way.
In fact, that's how this game should be viewed: an automotive playground. "Automotive" does not begin and end at one person's concept of it, no matter how much they claim to be in the majority (as if that actually counts for anything outside of the potential greed of the developer / publisher), they will always be a minority in some other sense. A game isn't something of exceptional practical utility, and one of the highlights of videogaming through its brief history has been its ability to expose and satisfy niches, not just the mainstream (which is always being diverted anyway, usually by the next new thing that probably started as a niche...)
Competitive AI is also what I want, and GT hasn't been the game for that either. That does not mean I would not like to see it addressed in future GT releases.
No, but it is on the mission statement, to a degree. It is something that fits in with the progression of the series, as PD have been slowly / steadily working towards it. Their general approach appears to be to explore new areas first and try something different - some people like that, some people don't. I think it's important to have such developmental diversity in the genre, because it allows cross-pollination and sharing the burden of innovation collectively.
PD have said that the next game is getting improved AI (again). I'm looking for small improvements, because history, but we'll see.
