lol, rage crowd. 30 fps no buy, slam it in reviews....

I played for 3 hours straight yesterday and forgot the time completely.

It runs smooth, no stutters or jitters.... But everyone is so obsessed with the frame rate in the corner they forget to game....

Every single Mafia Game had huge problems on release. Every one....the first one was near unplayable for months !! THe 30 fps limit gets cut in a patch, they already announced so ...

For me I don't have an issue with running at 30fps. But it would be really nice if there was a 60fps mode... luckily they're pushing a patch that adds higher frame rate options. However I have a feeling the game won't run very well past 30fps.

The missions are really nice. The guns feel very good. Enemies are not the brightest but good cannon fodder and make great targets for takedowns (so brutal). City feels a bit emptier than GTA

Do you know if there's a difficulty option? I saw the gameplay trailers and the combat looks too easy.

There are 3 difficulties, it isn't too easy if you avoid stealth because you can die pretty quickly and manual aim is quite tricky because the reticule floats around.

Yep, I've been dying a bit more than I'm used to recently, seems to be a decent challenge so far :D

I have had one crash to blue screen about an hour in but no probs since then and that might just be because I keep deleting the bare minimum to add new games to my drive .... roll on release day for the 1TB pro, although I'll almost certainly be wishing for a bigger HDD before long

The game is nice. People still expect this as GTA sibling? It isn't. It's a awesome story game in an open world that just serves for the story and gameplay...

And it doesn't bother me. The free roam in GTA is nice, but gets boring after 10 minutes...
Good to hear 👍
That was my main worry about this game. Would you say it retained much of the atmosphere of Mafia 2? Seems a lot more violent and action packed in comparison going off what we saw so far, hence the comparison people make with GTA and the fears that it would be a departure from the series style.

I started downloading this game at 10:30, and it's been installing since 12:30, but it's been stuck at 11% for about 40 minutes now. Any suggestions? This is a PS4 digital copy.

Been playing for about an hour and a half and must it's very enjoyable game, graphics are nice.
And 30 fps hasn't been bothering me that much, I admit 60 fps would off course be better.

Does it live up to Mafia 2 ?

I would say yes. While it's not the italian mob, there's plenty of italian mob present in the game. And it still centers around the italian mafia... just an other perspective...

Plus a caracter from Mafia 2 makes it return, which is highly enjoyable.

If you liked the Mafia Series for what it is, a story driven open world game, you gonna enjoy this...

I'm 6 hours in, and barely scratched the surface...

Though Eurogamer probably gonna give it a 4/10, just like Mafia 1&2

I really enjoy playing it... and while I struggle to complete any GTA game, Mafia games I throughly enjoyed playing from start to finish...

Those brutal takedowns, the drifts in cars (still handles like Mafias cars  ), the scenery, the mocaps on the faces, facial animations,...

And nearly forgot, the soundtrack .... OMG ... perfection... I find myself parked in the car, finishing that one song, just before starting a mission 👍

I've been reading a bunch of reviews on steam and with regards to the PC version there's the 30fps, and many complaining about blurry horizons, shadows popping in and out, key bindings that are buggy, crashes etcetera...

I'm pretty sure now it's another gem of a game story and atmosphere wise like 2 was (hooray!), but it needs sorting out first before i spend my cash on it.

I can't recall the last time i heard about a game that was polished upon release, gaming industry nowadays really does make you pay top dollar for being a beta tester.

I wouldn't give too much about those reviews. A look at the discussion forum of the game on steam shows pretty well who comments... it's just because some are salty because the 30fps... there are numberous threads about "please leave a negative review,...", "this is so last gen" "2k is the reason why the world ends" "long live GTA"....

But there are some blurry textures sometimes...
I did not have a single crash, neither pop ups... (i7 6700k / 970Gtx)

There are also the obvious Mafia flaws of a city feeling emptier than GTA, driving mechanics,....

But it's fun, and story is where the meat is. I don't think it's fair to compare it to GTA which had a multiple of the budget. And Mafia never tried to be a GTA clone... it just constantly gets compared too...

So if I loved Mafia but hated Mafia 2, where would this one fall on the scale between the two?

That's really hard as most people loved both...

I would say it has the story of the old Mafia, and the mission structure is a bit like the godfather game... but better...

The game costs 30 bucks on key stores (not marketplace, not Russia)

See those screens look a lot more like Mafia than the second one.

Though the second one amusingly looks like the area around Brucie's garage in GTA IV.

How is mission variety? I felt like the missions in Joe's Adventure were more varied and interesting than the original story in 2, they just sucked in the sense there was no story around them.

i saw the map and it looks big, does it feel big too ?

i thought this look more interesting than GTA V though lol

Starting to get a bit bored, taking over districts really feels like a chore even though Hangar13 has tried to make them varied, it's a shame that it is so integral to the story's progression. The game badly needs fast travel in my opinion, I've found myself just holding R2 and staring at the distance to my objective way more than I'd like to.

I don't like how the overall game looks (at least on PC)... It has this strange resolution upscaling and texturing that reminds me of Quantum Break. And those things ruined the game performance-wise.

And it seems that I was correct, though the technique Mafia III seems to use is a little different from Quantum Break http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/mafia-3-hangar-13/ The link also described crashes, which happened to me on occasion.
Other people claim that the game does run at native resolution, but you have to turn AA to low or off. It's FXAA and makes the game look terribly muddy.

As for performance, I have a 4690K 4.5ghz, 16gb RAM, and a overclocked 1070. I can see why there's an FPS cap... this game is demanding on the GPU. Reducing settings of course helps, but that puts it closer to console-quality.

Yeah they didn't cap the frame rate by accident, the game is clearly not optimised at all. They are rushing to get this patch out that unlocks the frame rate but I almost guarantee nobody is going to get a stable 60fps without a crazy PC with SLI 1080's or something like that. This is another great reminder of why you should never pre-order games.

Yeah i'm expecting issues too when the frame rate is unlocked.

Didn't pre order though and got the cheapest available option so eventually i do hope i get that bang for my buck.

Edit: PC patch is out tonight.

Well there you have it, you need a 1080 to get an average FPS above 50. My 970 can only manage 30

Sounds about right with the 1070 bench. Now I see why they had a 30fps cap. The interesting bit too is that the game is very CPU intensive over 30fps. My i5 is pinged at 90-100% all the time, and so is my GPU.

Bloody hell my GTX960 will give me 22fps? I'll check it out in the next days but if it looks like a slideshow I'm getting a refund.

Those fps figures look odd for sure. There might be few settings like usual, that don't make much difference but give a decent fps boost.

^If it runs you will enjoy it....

I'm now 15hours +- in... so my review of it:

Let's start with the negatives:

- Poorly optimized (fps, what @Techy said a few posts above basicly, it reminded me instantly of Quantum break, where everything a meter away looks muddy and detail-less, but Quantum Break is far far worse, Steam version)
- The mentioned above lack of detail, muddy look
- Skybox that looks bad (I only noticed it after I saw it in a review)
- Textures that are hit or miss
- AI that is just okay
- Repetitive missions after the first 3 hours (when roaming becomes the main game, but they are still enjoyable, just stay in a district)
- Non story relevant missions : a lot of the missions, that are like in Godfather games, are just fillers. This is not true to the old Mafia games, where nearly every mission was essential to the story.
- Car sounds that seem to go trough a filter, lot of dynamic range noised out
- Upgrades, which could make the gameplay much more pleasable take too long to be unlocked...

The missunderstood parts of the game:
- While the breaching of the grid, bugging out phones lines seem trivial, it does affect the story. You will learn secrets about the Lt. and thus can blackmail them to work for you, giving more money...more unlocks. But it's again a feeled filler... (a few per district, whereas 1 would be enough)
- The Stealth mechanics actually work and are okay.... just that the AI is too stupid to spot that you just sliced their buddies throat... 5 meters in front of them
- Driving model on simulation is fun, not realistic but fun...

Now the good parts:
- The story missions, or even the filler missions that are relevant (Lieutants and Capos) are simply awesome
- Locations : the locations where the good missions happen are amazing... from a quarry to an amusment park...) The whole citsy looks good and detailed, just some textures are not worth of a AAA 2016 game)
- When all the boxes are ticked the game feels gorgoeus. really feels =/ to really is
- The facial animations
- The sound acting and lip sync are top notch...
- The atmosphere of the 60's, the social divide, the apartheid. It just fuels the game world, when every cops stars you down, when bypassers insult you, when dispatchers comment on the district, if it's worth for cops to show up or not.
- The atmosphere of the ambiant sound is amazing, going through the neighborhood at nights, hearing dogs bark in a distance and the like. It just feels and sounds awesome.
- The gun play, especially the pistols have a certain oomph to it. It's a joy to just stick with a 1911 and you will feel like Bruce Willis in Last man standing.
- The cops. I died mutiple times from their white hands  When "it" goes down, it starts to spill everywhere

To conclude, they stretched out the missions to much, trying to give more gameplay, to the cost of repetition and trying a bit to much of GTA-ing... They botched the release quality wise.

But other than that it still is an awesome game, that I still enjoy very much... especially when all the good points come together, it will leave a memorable gaming moment...

Some of the missions will be referenced in the future. Like the opening which is phenomenal...

Side note.... looking at youtube and early hands-on, it's seems like there was some sketchy business in play, showing off stuff that was better in preview builds than in the final. The opening suggests a better game than later the game really is.
So a bit misleading. Either from 2k or Hanger13.
But for their second game, Hanger13 delivered something special once everything is a bit better patched out...

I also paid 30bucks for it, and for that price it is worth it....

One need to take the nostalgic glasses of and be reminded that Mafia 1 and 2 where bug riddled when released, and actually worse than this...
Or the game breaking glitches or difficulty (The race in Mafia 1, anyone? (apparently that was a thing))

With regards to the blur, if you put AA on low it makes things a lot sharper.

Booted it up for the first time, played for about 20 mins until the game freezed and i had to shut it down with task manager... Putting everything on low i had about 40fps so the chart above must be quite accurate i'm afraid.

Also my fan was blowing like crazy. So yes; probably one of the worst console ports on PC i have ever experienced. Disgraceful how they released the game this way. Hope they fix the freezes and crashes soon so i can actually try it out properly.

I bet they wanted it released before BF1

I'm lucky it runs on high stable on mine.... but I had some glitches too, not a lot, but they are there....

Really hope they fix some things... the blur (have AA on low too after Techy's post), better fps,...

What I never got is why port from Consoles to PC, from low to high instead of the opposite, as the "new" consoles are made from the PC bin...

If you want to get rid of the blur, you can use SweetFX presets. https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/game/1488/ Very easy to install them. Though if you play on Steam the overlay breaks.

I'm using the Color Correction preset and the game looks significantly better. But the issues with graphics quality still remain, like how reflections update while in motion or some weird blurring effect while in motion.

Honestly I don't think I'm gonna touch this game until these issues get ironed out.

I'm hearing that the game overheats PC components. Could be due to the high CPU usage when you unlock the framerate.
